Host breed and geography shape the antiviral defense landscape of the bovine rumen microbiome.

The rumen microbiome represents a complex, phage-rich ecosystem where microbial survival depends on both metabolic cooperation and antiviral defense. However, global and breed-associated variations in rumen prokaryotic immune systems remain poorly understood. Here, we performed the most comprehensive profile to date of antiviral defense systems (DS) in the rumen, analyzing 6530 microbial genomes and metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from diverse cattle breeds and geographic regions. In this global dataset, we identified >90 000 DS, the most abundant of which were restriction-modification, PD

Effects of highly pathogenic avian influenza on the behaviour and survival of a colonial breeding seabird.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 viruses of clade 2.3.4.4b have caused widespread mortality in wild and domestic birds globally. Colonial breeding seabirds have been severely affected across Europe, the Americas and Antarctica since 2021. Despite extensive outbreaks, most reports have been limited to morbidity and mortality, while less is known on behavioural effects of infection. We monitored six colonies of black-headed gulls (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) throughout an outbreak during the 2023 breeding season (confirmed as H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b, EA-2022-BB genotype), combining fiel…

Breed-specific plasma metabolomic profiles of tropical goats as a basis for precision nutrition.

BACKGROUND: The productivity of goats in the tropics is largely hampered by low feeding efficiency and inefficient nutrient utilization. Understanding the breed-specific metabolic response is essential for developing a feeding strategy under low environmental conditions. Metabolomics provides a systemic approach to identifying metabolic changes that would not be detected by conventional biochemical markers. AIM: This study aimed to identify breed-specific metabolic differences among tropical goat breeds and identify potential nutritional biomarkers for precision feeding. METHODS: An integrat

Showing Behaviour in One Hundred and One Dogs: Gazing, Breed and Cephalic Index.

Dogs exhibit sophisticated interspecific communication skills, including the use of visual signals to indicate the location of inaccessible resources, known as showing behaviour. Previous studies have investigated factors such as age and training, but the effects of breed and cranial morphology remain unclear. Here, we tested a uniquely large sample of 101 pet dogs from 43 different breeds, using a standardized out-of-reach/hidden object task to assess three key visual behaviours: gaze at the owner, gaze at the reward, and gaze alternation between owner and reward. Dogs were tested in familiar

Beef-on-dairy and Holstein calves: Impacts of breed and pair composition on behavior and performance.

Beef-on-dairy calves are present in dairy farms worldwide; however, little is known about their behavior or if social housing with purebred dairy calves may influence each other's behavioral patterns. The aim of this paper was to evaluate, through 2 studies, the effects of breed (Holstein vs. beef-on-dairy [Angus × Holstein] calves) and pair composition on performance, behavior, and behavioral responses in standardized tests. In Study 1 (n = 26 calves: 18 Holstein, 8 beef-on-dairy), we compared behavior and performance between the 2 breeds. Calves were observed by scan sampling (5 d/wk; after

Prevalence and lesion distribution of atopic dermatitis in small-to-medium breed dogs in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Canine atopic dermatitis (cAD) varies in prevalence and lesion distribution across breeds. In contrast to Western countries, many Asian countries favour small-to-medium dog breeds. However, previous studies have focused primarily on medium-to-large dog breeds. OBJECTIVES: To analyse the prevalence and lesion distribution of cAD in common breeds in Korea, focusing on breed-specific characteristics. ANIMALS: Nine small-to-medium breeds (<25 kg body weight) were selected from 331 client-owned dogs with cAD, representing 77% of the total cAD group. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Breeds sele

Congenital Non-Epidermolytic Ichthyosis in Two Littermate Mixed-Breed Yorkshire Terriers.

Congenital non-epidermolytic ichthyosis was diagnosed in two littermate mixed-breed Yorkshire terrier puppies. Histopathological results confirmed lamellar orthokeratosis; genetic testing for known mutations was negative. Topical treatment improved clinical signs, yet relapse occurred upon discontinuation. This case expands the breeds affected and emphasises the need for life-long management.

Selection signatures and inbreeding: exploring genetic diversity in five native horse breeds.

Horses have undergone extensive natural and artificial selection, shaping the diversity of breeds observed today. Native Italian breeds present unique traits influenced by natural selection, such as adaptation to harsh climates, or hoof strength, but face challenges due to population declines and the reduction of their original breeding purpose. This study focuses on five local Italian breeds: Bardigiano, Haflinger, Maremmano, Murgese, and Italian Heavy Draught Horse, to understand how selection has shaped their populations. A total of 1620 individuals were genotyped with a medium-density SNP …

The Interactive Effects of Nutrient Density and Breed on Growth Performance and Gut Microbiota in Broilers.

This study investigated whether variations in growth response to low nutrient density across breeds are linked to microbiota regulation. Arbor Acres (AA) and Beijing-You (BY) were fed high- (HN) and low-nutrient (LN) diets from day (d) 0 to d42. Body weight, feed intake, and intestinal measurements were recorded, and microbiota from the ileum and cecum were analyzed on d7, d21, and d42. Results showed that AA broilers had greater growth performance with a lower feed conversion ratio (FCR) and greater average daily gain (ADG) than BY chickens. The LN diet negatively affected AA broiler growth d

Breed, parity, and days in milk affect risk of tongue rolling in dairy cows.

Stereotypic behaviors are repetitive, invariant movements with no obvious biological function. Tongue rolling (TR) is a common stereotypic behavior in cattle, characterized by a repeated circular movement of the tongue inside or outside of the mouth. We assessed TR in adult lactating dairy cows (from 45 to 305 d in milk; DIM) on a large commercial US dairy comprised of Jersey and Jersey-Holstein crosses (n = 8,158 cows). Cows were monitored during each of 3 consecutive milkings using video cameras located at the center of 2 rotary parlors. In total, 29.0% (2,365/8,158) of cows tongue rolled at

The composition and mechanical properties of porcine placental ECM from three different breeds.

Biologic scaffolds are extensively used in various clinical applications such as musculotendinous reconstruction, hernia repair or wound healing. Biologic scaffolds used in these applications vary in species, breed and tissue of origin, and other variables that affect their properties. Decellularization and sterilization processes also determine the characteristics of these scaffolds. The goal of the present study is to compare the composition and mechanical properties of decellularized porcine placental scaffolds from three different porcine breeds: Landrace, York and Duroc. Characterization of feed efficiency-related key signatures molecular in different cattle breeds.

Feed efficiency is a major constraint in the beef industry and has a significant negative correlation with residual feed intake (RFI). RFI is widely used as a measure of feed efficiency in beef cattle and is independent of economic traits such as body weight and average daily gain. However, key traits with commonality or specificity among beef cattle breeds at the same level of RFI have not been reported. Accordingly, the present study hypothesized that signatures associated with feed efficiency would have commonality or specificity in the liver of cattle breeds at the same RFI level. By compa
