[The clinical manifestations of Sjögren's syndrome in children].

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is thought to be uncommon in children. We studied the clinical manifestations and laboratory findings of 12 pediatric patients with SS, all of children did not have sicca symptoms but have lymphocytic infiltration of salivary glands, abnormal sialograms or abnormal results of scintigraphy compatible with typical SS. Seven cases had primary SS and five were secondary SS and had other autoimmune disorders (three cases with systemic lupus erythematosus, one case with dermatomyositis, and the other with mixed connective tissue disease). All patients were female. The mean ag

Bladder inhibition by penile nerve stimulation in spinal cord injury patients.

Detrusor hyperreflexia causing voiding dysfunction in spinal cord injury patients is a difficult problem and is not always treated effectively by anticholinergic agents. We have been investigating electrical stimulation methods to inhibit hyperreflexia and dorsal penile nerve stimulation is the most promising. Six chronic suprasacral spinal cord injury men (average age 36 years) underwent stimulation testing with water cystometry before, during and after stimulation. Dorsal penile stimulation was done with carbon rubber butterfly electrodes (Medtronic) with parameters of 5 pulses per second, 0

Symptomatology and diagnosis in connective tissue disease. II. Evaluations and follow-up examinations in consequence of a speckled antinuclear immunofluorescence pattern.

Antibodies to soluble ribonucleoprotein (sRNP) are by definition a prerequisite for the diagnosis mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD). They are also found in 30--40% of other rheumatic conditions with a high titred speckled IFL reaction. The same is true for the most characteristic clinical features of MCTD, viz. Raynaud's syndrome and polymyositis--polymyalgia. The serological and clinical symptoms mentioned are closely associated. An association between anti-Sm and the SLE symptoms butterfly erythema, nephropathia, other visceropathias and cerebrovascular disease is confirmed by the prese

Venom of the parasitoid wasp Pteromalus puparum contains an odorant binding protein.

Odorant binding proteins (OBPs) are crucial for insects to detect food, mates, predators, or other purposes. They are mostly located on antennae and other olfactory sensilla. In this study, we identified an OBP from the venom of Pteromalus puparum, designated as PpOBP. The cDNA of PpOBP is 517 bp in length, encoding 132 amino acids. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that PpOBP was clustered with OBP68 and OBP67 of Nasonia vitripennis. PpOBP was highly expressed in the venom apparatus at the transcriptional and translational levels. PpOBP was located in all parts of venom apparatus including venom

Bioassays for assessing jasmonate-dependent defenses triggered by pathogens, herbivorous insects, or beneficial rhizobacteria.

Jasmonates, together with other plant hormones, are important orchestrators of the plant immune system. The different hormone-controlled signaling pathways cross-communicate in an antagonistic or a synergistic manner, providing the plant with a powerful capacity to finely regulate its immune response. Jasmonic acid (JA) signaling is required for plant resistance to harmful organisms, such as necrotrophic pathogens and herbivorous insects. Furthermore, JA signaling is essential in interactions of plants with beneficial microbes that induce systemic resistance to pathogens and insects. The role

Interleukin-6 responses to acute stress are not altered in alcohol use disorder despite elevated baseline inflammation.

Acute stress activates the immune system, leading to the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-6 (IL-6). Chronic alcohol consumption alters the physiological stress systems and is associated with increased chronic inflammation. However, it remains unclear how IL-6 responds to acute stress in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Forty patients with AUD during early abstinence and 37 healthy controls (HC) completed two study visits. On one day, an acute stress induction task was performed, and on the other, a non-stressful control task, with the order of tasks being

Analysis of Factors Affecting the Union of Closed Subtrochanteric Femur Fractures treated by Cephalomedullary Nailing.

INTRODUCTION: With surgical advancements and improved implants and instrumentation, nailing is the procedure of choice in subtrochanteric fractures. However, failure in achieving reduction of the multidirectional displacement of the fragments prior to passing the nail, contributes to delayed/non-unions at the fracture site leading to implant failures. In this study, we aim to analyse the factors affecting union of closed subtrochanteric fractures treated by nailing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, closed subtrochanteric fractures treated with cephalomedullary nailing betwe

POCUS for the People: A Rounds-Integrated Point-of-Care Ultrasound Curriculum for Medical Students at a Guatemalan Public Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Internal medicine (IM) education in resource-limited hospitals is constrained by heavy workloads and imaging limited to plain radiography. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) supports experiential learning and diagnostic reasoning, yet no rounds-integrated IM curricula have been described in Latin America, and most programs stop short of practice-based bedside assessment. AIM: To implement and evaluate a rounds-integrated POCUS curriculum in a resource-limited IM setting. SETTING: Hospital Nacional de Coatepeque (228-bed Guatemalan public hospital). PARTICIPANTS: Eight final-year m

Look Fear in the Eyes: The Influence of Emotion Regulation on Spider Size Estimation-A Pupillometry Study.

The link between perceptual biases and fear has been extensively documented in recent years. For example, the size of spiders is overestimated among people with a high fear of them. While emotion regulation processes are known to reduce fear, it is yet unknown whether emotion regulation can also reduce fear-related perceptual biases. This study examined the behavioral and physiological influence of cognitive reappraisal, an adaptive emotion regulation strategy, on spider size estimation among women with a high fear of spiders. Forty women with a high fear of spiders completed a trial-by-trial

Scapular Dyskinesis and Associated Factors in Adult Elite Swimmers.

Background and Objectives: Swimmers are repeatedly exposed to overhead shoulder movements, which overload the surrounding soft tissue and may contribute to shoulder pain. These repetitive demands have also been implicated in the development of scapular dyskinesis (SD). This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of SD and to examine its associations with extrinsic and intrinsic factors in adult elite swimmers. Materials and Methods: Fifty competitive swimmers (mean age, 23.9 years; mean training experience, 13.6 years) participated in this study. SD was graded using the Scapul

Terminal myelocystocele and the chiari connection: a case-based review with a novel pathophysiological hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: Terminal myelocystocele (TMC) is rare form of closed neural tube defect (NTD), accounting for approximately 4-8% of occult spinal dysraphisms. It is defined by cystic dilatation of the distal central canal herniating through a posterior spina bifida, typically covered by intact skin. Frequently associated with multisystem malformations, its pathogenesis remains debated, with theories involving disordered secondary neurulation, abnormal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics, and failed disjunction between ectodermal layers. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the case of a male neonate with

Assessing respiratory airflow unsteadiness under different tidal respiratory frequencies using large eddy simulation method.

Unsteady respiratory airflow characteristics play a crucial role in understanding the deposition of toxic particles and inhaled aerosol drugs in the human respiratory tract. Considering the variations in respiratory flow rate and glottis motion under different respiratory frequencies, these respiratory airflow characteristics are studied by large-eddy simulations, including pressure field, power loss, modal spatial patterns, and vortex structures. Firstly, the results reveal that varying respiratory frequencies significantly affect airflow unsteadiness, turbulent evolution, and vortex structur

Unexpected versatile electrical transport behaviors of ferromagnetic nickel films.

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of magnets is paramount for electrically controlled spintronics due to their intrinsic potentials for higher memory density, scalability, thermal stability and endurance, surpassing an in-plane magnetic anisotropy (IMA). Nickel film is a long-lived fundamental element ferromagnet, yet its electrical transport behavior associated with magnetism has not been comprehensively studied, hindering corresponding spintronic applications exploiting nickel-based compounds. Here, we systematically investigate the highly versatile magnetism and corresponding transpor

VACTERL Association in a Fetus With a Normal Genetic Profile.

VACTERL association is a statistical association of vertebral(V), anal(A), cardiac(C), tracheoesophageal(TE), renal(R), and limb(L) abnormalities (VACTERL). Diagnosis of VACTERL can be made if anomalies in three or more organ systems indicated by the acronym are present and no other recognizable pattern of human malformations exists. We hereby present a case of a primigravida in her 20s, whose prenatal scan at 13 weeks of gestation revealed a fetus having a short spine, single outflow tract, and increased nuchal translucency. Chromosome microarray on amniotic fluid showed no quantitative genom
