The biogeochemistry and bioavailability of cadmium, released during sphalerite weathering in soils, were investigated under contrasting agricultural scenarios to assess health risks associated with sphalerite dust transport to productive soils from mining. Laboratory experiments (365 d) on temperate and sub-tropical soils amended with sphalerite (<63 μm, 0.92 wt.% Cd) showed continuous, slow dissolution (0.6-1.2% y(-1)). We report our first experience of brain DaTSCAN SPECT imaging using cadmium-zinc-telluride gamma camera (CZT-GC) in 2 cases: a 64-year-old patient suffering from essential tremor and a 73-year-old patient presenting with atypical bilateral extrapyramidal syndrome. In the title compound, [Cd(C(6)H(5)N(2)O(2))(2)(H(2)O)(2)], the Cd(II) ion is coordinated in a severely distorted octa-hedral geometry. The N atoms are cis to each other, while the water O atoms and ligand O atoms are mutually trans. The crystal structure is stabilized by a network of O-H⋯O, O-H⋯N and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking inter-actions [centroid-centroid distances = 3.730 (3) and 3.652 (3) Å] between the 5-methyl-pyrazine-2-carboxyl-ate ligands. In the title compound, [Cd(C(12)H(16)NO(4)S)(2)(H(2)O)]·2H(2)O, the Cd atom is located on a twofold rotation axis and a distorted CdO(8) dodeca-hedral arrangement arises from the coordination of the two chelating ligands and four water mol-ecules. A network of N-H⋯O, O-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds help to establish the crystal packing.
