A retrospective study on diaphragmatic hernia in cats.

Diaphragmatic rupture is introduced as one of the most common injuries occurring in small animals. In our retrospective report, 14 cats with a mean age of 12 months (male = 8, female = 6) that underwent diaphragmatic herniorrhaphy were studied. The data included the following: age, sex, breed, and clinical signs. The cause of diaphragmatic hernia, diaphragmatic rupture area, herniated organs, concomitant injuries, and survival rate after surgical treatment were detailed. The cats included 11 domestic shorthair (DSH) and three Persian. Trauma was the most common cause of rupture in these patien…

Prevalence of bacteriuria in cats with neurogenic bladder.

Urinary tract infections are defined as the adherence, multiplication, and persistence of an infectious agent within the urogenital system, causing an associated inflammatory response and clinical signs; instead, the presence of bacteria in urine as determined by positive bacterial culture (PUC) from a properly collected urine specimen, in the absence of clinical signs, is defined subclinical bacteriuria. Limited information on the prevalence of PUC in spinal cord injury cats affected by neurogenic bladder (NB) is available. On contrary, in NB dogs and humans the prevalence of bacteriuria is w…

Predicting outcomes in hyperthyroid cats treated with radioiodine.

BACKGROUND: Radioiodine (131 I) is the treatment of choice for cats with hyperthyroidism. After 131 I, however, euthyroidism is not always achieved, with 5% to 10% of cats remaining persistently hyperthyroid and 20% to 50% developing iatrogenic hypothyroidism. OBJECTIVES: To identify pretreatment factors that may help predict persistent hyperthyroidism and iatrogenic hypothyroidism after treatment of cats using a novel 131 I dosing algorithm. ANIMALS: One thousand and four hundred hyperthyroid cats treated with 131 I. METHODS: Prospective, before-and-after study. Pretreatment predictors (cl…

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in Cats from Cyprus.

Toxoplasma gondii is a cosmopolitan protozoon parasite, and the causative agent of toxoplasmosis, one of the most prevalent zoonotic parasitic diseases. Cats, as definitive hosts, spread the parasite via their faeces, but this occurs only for a very short period in their life. Seropositivity in cats, although not associated with current shedding of the parasite, is indicative of the infection in a cat population and can be used to assess the infection risk for definitive and intermediate hosts in that area. In order to assess the prevalence of infection in cats living in Cyprus, 155 cats, orig…

Renal epitheliotropism of feline morbillivirus in two cats.

The association of feline morbillivirus (FeMV) with kidney disease in cats is controversial. Two cats with a history of severe hematuria had eosinophilic inclusion-like bodies in the renal tubular epithelial cells, without any inflammatory cellular reaction. Ultrastructurally, aggregations of electron-dense viral-like particles were found where the inclusion-like bodies were located. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) using antibodies against FeMV matrix protein labeled these inclusion-like bodies, and also labeled the cytoplasm of tracheal and bronchiolar epithelial cells, and lymphocytes and macroph…

Developmental genetics of color pattern establishment in cats.

Intricate color patterns are a defining aspect of morphological diversity in the Felidae. We applied morphological and single-cell gene expression analysis to fetal skin of domestic cats to identify when, where, and how, during fetal development, felid color patterns are established. Early in development, we identify stripe-like alterations in epidermal thickness preceded by a gene expression pre-pattern. The secreted Wnt inhibitor encoded by Dickkopf 4 plays a central role in this process, and is mutated in cats with the Ticked pattern type. Our results bring molecular understanding to how th…

All about toxoplasmosis in cats: the last decade.

Toxoplasma gondii infections are common in humans and animals worldwide. Toxoplasmosis continues to be of public health concern. Cats (domestic and wild felids) are the most important host in the epidemiology of toxoplasmosis because they are the only species that can excrete the environmentally resistant oocysts in feces. Cats can excrete millions of oocysts and a single cat can spread infection to many hosts. The present paper summarizes information on prevalence, persistence of infection, clinical signs, and diagnosis of T. gondii infections in domestic and wild cats for the past decade. Sp…

Genetic heterogeneity of polydactyly in Maine Coon cats.

OBJECTIVES: Polydactyly has been described in two breeds of domestic cats (Maine Coon and Pixie Bob) and in some outbred domestic cats (eg, Hemingway cats). In most cases, feline polydactyly is a non-syndromic preaxial polydactyly. Three variants located in a regulatory sequence involved in limb development, named ZRS (zone of polarising activity regulatory sequence), have been identified to be responsible for feline polydactyly. These variants have been found in outbred domestic cats in the UK (UK1 and UK2 variants) and in Hemingway cats in the USA (Hw variant). The aim of this study was to c…

Ultrasonographic evaluation of cholecystoduodenostomy sites in six cats.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: This case series describes the postoperative ultrasonographic findings in six cats that underwent a cholecystoduodenostomy as treatment for extrahepatic biliary obstruction. The surgery site was identified in all six cats, most often within the right cranial abdomen as a thick-walled gall bladder, with a broad-based connection to the descending duodenum. Postoperatively, the biliary tree often remained distended, similar to its preoperative appearance. Recurrent extrahepatic biliary obstruction was suspected in three cats with worsening hyperbilirubinemia. Common bile duct…

Non-Renal Lesions of Uraemia in Domestic Cats.

Uraemia is a clinical syndrome caused by an increase in uraemia-associated toxins in the bloodstream as a consequence of intrinsic kidney or lower urinary tract diseases. Cats seem to be more affected by urinary tract diseases than dogs, particularly considering that chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most important conditions in cats. Considering the lack of information on the systemic lesions of uraemia in cats, the aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and clinical and pathological aspects of non-renal lesions in uraemic cats, with special attention to the differences …

Laryngeal Disease in Dogs and Cats: An Update.

Laryngeal diseases are manifested by obstructive breathing patterns reflecting functional or mechanical upper airway obstruction. Laryngeal paralysis is the most common disease of the larynx. Diagnosis requires close attention to anesthetic plane and coordination of respiratory effort with laryngeal motion. Surgical arytenoid lateralization improves clinical signs and quality of life in dogs; however, aspiration pneumonia is a recognized complication, and generalized neuropathy can progress. Laryngeal collapse can result from any cause of chronic upper airway obstruction but is most often asso

Gastrointestinal parasites in shelter cats of central Italy.

In Italy, the limited resources and the large number of cats living in feline shelters may facilitate the spread of parasite infections that may affect the health of cats and expose shelter workers and adoptive owners to zoonosis. Prevalence and risk factors of potential zoonotic and host-specific gastrointestinal parasite infections were assessed in cats living in public and private shelters of central Italy. Individual fecal samples were examined macroscopically and then screened microscopically by fresh and Lugol stained fecal smears and by flotation and the Baermann tests. A commercial rap…

Fungal Rhinosinusitis and Disseminated Invasive Aspergillosis in Cats.

Fungal rhinosinusitis, including sinonasal aspergillosis (SNA) and sino-orbital aspergillosis (SOA), is the most common type of aspergillosis encountered in cats. Other focal forms of aspergillosis including disseminated invasive aspergillosis occur less frequently. SOA is an invasive mycosis that is increasingly recognized and is most commonly caused by Aspergillus felis, a close relative of Aspergillus fumigatus. SNA can be invasive or noninvasive and is most commonly caused by A fumigatus and Aspergillus niger. Molecular methods are required to correctly identify the fungi that cause SNA an…

Indications for permanent pacing in dogs and cats.

Pacemaker implantation is considered as a standard procedure for treatment of symptomatic bradycardia in both dogs and cats. Advanced second-degree and third-degree atrioventricular blocks, sick sinus syndrome, persistent atrial standstill, and vasovagal syncope are the most common rhythm disturbances that require pacing to either alleviate clinical signs or prolong survival. Most pacemakers are implanted transvenously, using endocardial leads, but rarely epicardial leads may be necessary. To decide whether a patient is a candidate for pacing, as well as which pacing modality should be used, t…

Oesophageal obstruction due to trichobezoars in two cats.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: This case series describes two cats diagnosed with oesophageal obstruction due to trichobezoars. Both cases presented for acute dyspnoea, with thoracic radiographs revealing changes consistent with oesophageal foreign material causing ventral displacement of the trachea. Endoscopic removal was unsuccessful and both cases required surgical intervention. Case 1 died within 24 h of trichobezoar removal, likely from aspiration pneumonia. Case 2 developed laryngeal collapse 10 days after trichobezoar removal and required a permanent tracheostomy. Case 2 has been followed up for…
