Combined tonsillar reflex zone stimulation and four-step manipulative reduction for Grisel syndrome following pediatric adenotonsillectomy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Grisel syndrome (GS), also referred to as nontraumatic atlantoaxial subluxation, is typically associated with head and neck infections, inflammation, or postoperative complications. Its clinical manifestations include torticollis, neck pain and stiffness, restricted cervical mobility, and muscle spasms. Based on the pathological features of GS following tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, as well as the anatomical relationship between the palatine tonsils and the atlantoaxial joint, this report proposes a therapeutic approach combining manual stimulation of the tonsillar reflex zone w

Characterization of DNA hydroxymethylation profile in cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer is one of the most common gynecological tumors in females. DNA methylation alteration is a type of epigenetic decoration that controls the gene transcriptional regulation and is essential for the pathological progression of cervical cancer to reflect the prognosis and therapeutic sensitivity in clinical practice. Beyond DNA methylation, DNA hydroxymethylation considered as a more stable biomarker draws the outline of the reversible cycle from DNA methylation and demethylation. However, the landscape of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) distributed in the genome is never characteri

Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis Presenting as Progressively Worsening Neck Pain: A Case Report With a Review of Literature.

A 29-year-old female with past medical history of chronic serous otitis media presented with worsening neck stiffness and pain over a period of 2 weeks. The patient described non-specific symptoms that were localized to the right side of her neck. She presented to the hospital only when the pain was so extreme that it limited her range of motion. The differential for acute neck pain without fever, chills or any inciting trauma is vast. They include medical emergencies such as meningitis, acute coronary syndromes and extend to rheumatologic diseases or simply musculoskeletal strain. On review o

Associations among sella turcica bridging, atlas arcuate foramen (ponticulus posticus) development, atlas posterior arch deficiency, and the occurrence of palatally displaced canine impaction.

INTRODUCTION: Head and neck skeletal anomalies or normal variants might predict the occurrence of palatally displaced impacted maxillary canines. Despite their clinical importance, studies in this regard are rare, especially when it comes to vertebral anomalies. METHODS: This case-control study was performed on cephalographs of 35 orthodontic patients (11 male, 24 female) with palatally displaced canines (PDC) and 75 patients without them (29 male, 46 female). PDC were diagnosed on panoramic and lateral cephalographs and from clinical reports. The occurrence and severity of sella turcica brid

Quantitative Measurements of the Skull Base and Craniovertebral Junction in Congenital Occipitalization of the Atlas: A Computed Tomography-Based Anatomic Study.

OBJECTIVE: To study the craniovertebral junction and determine the anatomic characteristics of occipitalization of the atlas (OC) by computed tomography (CT) imaging. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 80 cases of patients with OC who underwent cervical CT scanning between March 2012 and March 2014. Forty healthy subjects were recruited as a control cohort. Fusion pattern and associated osseous anomalies were recorded. Fifteen linear quantitative parameters were measured to study the outlet of the foramen magnum, angular dimension of the skull base, posterior cranial fossa, and height of th

Retrodental mass in rheumatoid arthritis.

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective investigation of the retrodental mass secondary to rheumatoid arthritis (RA). OBJECTIVE: To propose a new classification of the retrodental mass in RA, and to evaluate their resorption processes and surgical procedures. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The retrodental mass secondary to RA has long been recognized as pannus formation. It is also known that pannus will disappear or radically reduce after stabilization of the atlantoaxial segment. The past reports, however, leave unanswered the following question; are there other types of mass with significantly differe

Ossification patterns of the atlas vertebra.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to characterize ossification patterns of the C1 (atlas) vertebra in children, to better differentiate normal variants from traumatic injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of all sinus and temporal bone CT examinations was performed for the period of 2002-2009. Patients 96 months old or younger for whom C1 level was at least partially imaged were included. Patients with a history of trauma or genetic disorder-associated spinal abnormalities were excluded. RESULTS: A total of 1270 CT examinations were reviewed. The anterior arch of C1

Occipitocervical fusion using contoured rods and medial offset connectors: description of a new technique.

Stabilization of the occipitocervical junction and fixation of the occiput is challenging. Rigid fixation with plates and screws has reduced dependence on external immobilization and improved fusion rates. The strength of the occipital fixation can be compromised as plates constrain the ability to place occipital screws along the midline. Bilateral contoured rods with medial offset connectors allow placement of 6 occipital screws in the thickest and strongest bone along the midline, while easily connecting to screws in the cervical spine. The purpose of this study is to review complications an

Cervical spine instability following axial compression injury: a biomechanical study.

BACKGROUND: Axial compression injuries of the cervical spine occur during contact sports, automobile collisions, and falls. The objective of this study was to use flexibility tests to determine biomechanical instability of the cervical spine due to simulated axial compression injuries. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that the axial compression injuries cause severe biomechanical instability throughout the cervical spine. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The injuries were simulated using 2.4m/s head-first impacts of a cadaveric cervical spine model (n=10) mounted horizontally to a torso-equivalent mass on

Efficacy of a Novel Mechanical Cervical Dislocation Device in Comparison to Manual Cervical Dislocation in Layer Chickens.

The main objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of mechanical cervical dislocation using the Koechner Euthanasia Device Model C (KED) in comparison to manual cervical dislocation in layer chickens. Laying hens and/or roosters in three different age groups (12, 27-29, and 65-70 weeks old) were randomly assigned to one of three experimental groups: manual cervical dislocation in conscious birds (CD), manual cervical dislocation in anesthetized birds (aCD), or mechanical cervical dislocation by KED in anesthetized birds (aMCD). Anesthetized birds received an intramuscular dose of 0.3

The Transspinal Canal Screwing Technique for Atlantoaxial Anomalies: A Technical Note and 2 Case Reports.

It is difficult to treat atlantoaxial instability in patients with a high-riding vertebral artery or anomalies of the craniocervical junction. We report 2 successful cases in which the transspinal canal screwing technique was used because of difficulties performing conventional fixation methods. Case 1: A 78-year-old woman suffered from progressive myelopathy due to severe spinal cord compression with a congenital anomaly of the craniovertebral junction. Bilateral transspinal canal screws from the axis body with spondylolisthesis to the dens were inserted by retracting the dural sac medially a

Kimmerle's anomaly as a possible causative factor of chronic tension-type headaches and neurosensory hearing loss: case report and literature review.

Kimmerle's anomaly also known as ponticulus posticus is a common anatomical variation of the atlas, the first cervical vertebra. It is the product of the complete or incomplete ossification of the posterior atlanto-occipital membrane over the vertebral artery groove resulting in the formation of a foramen (arcuate foramen) containing the vertebral artery and the posterior branch of the C-1 spinal nerve. This variation has been associated with vertebro-basilar insufficiency symptoms, various types of headaches, and acute hearing loss. The aim of the present study is to substantiate whether Kimm
