Vertebral artery injury in a patient with fractured C4 vertebra.

Vertebral artery injuries due to cervical spine trauma, although rarely described in the literature, are relatively common. While most of them will remain asymptomatic, a small percentage of patients may suffer life threatening complications. We report a case of the right vertebral artery injury in a patient with fracture of C4 vertebra, successfully treated with endovascular approach. A 78-year-old male patient was hospitalized for cervical spine injury caused by falling off the tractor. Radiological assessment revealed fracture of C4 vertebra with proximal two-thirds of C4 body dislocated fi

Clay-Shoveler Fracture in a Paddler: A Case Report.

Clay-shoveler fracture is a fracture of the spinous process of lower cervical and upper thoracic vertebrae. It has only rarely been reported as being caused by an overuse sports injury. This case report describes the first reported clay-shoveler fracture in a paddler. A 51-year-old male paddler, preparing for a paddling adventure over 630 km, felt a click and a sharp pain paravertebrally on the level of the upper thoracic vertebrae while paddling. Sonar investigation did not reveal any muscular injury but computed tomography revealed a fracture of the spinous process of T1. In this case, it is

Axial superior facet slope may determine anterior or posterior atlantoaxial displacement secondary to os odontoideum and compensatory mechanisms of the atlantooccipital joint and subaxial cervical spine.

OBJECTIVE: To introduce novel parameters in determining directions of os odontoideum (OO) with atlantoaxial displacement (AAD) and compensations of cervical sagittal alignment after displacement. METHODS: Analysis was performed on 96 cases receiving surgeries for upper cervical myelopathy caused by OO with AAD from 2011 to 2021. Twenty-four patients were included in the OO group and divided into the OO-anterior displacement (AD) group and the OO-posterior displacement (PD) group by displacement. Seventy-two patients were included as the control (Ctrl) group and divided into Ctrl-positive (Ctr

[Tomography in veterinary medicine. Possibilities for the application of this x-ray technic demonstrated on the spinal column of a dog].

After a short introduction of theoretical principles of tomography, the advantages of this technique--especially the representation of the dog's spinal column--are discussed with five case histories. This technique allows to produce isolated pictures of special parts of the spinal column which may be superpositioned by other body parts like: atlantooccipitalregion (especially dens axis), caudal cervical spine, thoracical spine and lumbosacral region. Particularly the evaluation of the intervertebral spaces, the small vertebral joints and the contours and structures of the vertebrae is enhanced

A radiographic study of the growth in width of the human fetal vertebral column.

Only a few studies have concerned themselves with the development of the fetal vertebral column, and this paper attempts to extend the literature. Standards are presented for the growth in width of the human vertebral column between 10 and 26 weeks of conceptual age. The growth patterns show that cervical and lumbar enlargements are not present at 8 weeks but develop slowly and become clearly present at 26 weeks. The growth equations also show that groups of vertebrae have their own growth patterns, indicating that the vertebral column could be separated into five groups: C1-C5, C6-C7, T1-T12,

A feather cyst causing vertebral bone lysis and spinal cord compression in a Lohmann Brown layer.

A feather cyst in the cervical region which, through complications of inward growth, resulted in compression of the cervical spinal cord of a Lohmann Brown layer is described. It is postulated that expansion of the cyst exerted pressure on the adjacent cervical vertebra and through bone lysis created an opening through which the cyst protruded, thereby exerting pressure on the spinal cord. The affected spinal cord segment was reduced to a fifth of its normal diameter. The bird most likely died of starvation because of limb and neck paralysis and disorientation. Although the cause of the feathe

Mid-line clefts of the atlas: a diagnostic dilemma.

Congenital clefts and other developmental anomalies of the atlas vertebra are rarely encountered. They are incidental findings discovered while investigating the cervical spine following trauma. Differentiation of developmental variants of the atlas from the burst fracture of Jefferson is essential to prevent unnecessary medical intervention.

Operative outcomes for cervical degenerative disease: a review of the literature.

To date, several studies were conducted to find which procedure is superior to the others for the treatment of cervical myelopathy. The goal of surgical treatment should be to decompress the nerves, restore the alignment of the vertebrae, and stabilize the spine. Consequently, the treatment of cervical degenerative disease can be divided into decompression of the nerves alone, fixation of the cervical spine alone, or a combination of both. Posterior approaches have historically been considered safe and direct methods for cervical multisegment stenosis and lordotic cervical alignment. On the ot

Pasteurella multocida meningitis and cervical spine osteomyelitis in a neonate.

A 20-day-old male infant presented with fever, decreased alertness and quadriparesis as a result of Pasteurella multocida meningitis and C1-2 vertebral osteomyelitis. Although his household contained 2 pet cats, there was no history of bites, scratches or licks. We speculate that colonization of the nasopharynx was followed by contiguous spread to the retropharyngeal soft tissue, cervical vertebrae and meninges.

Wry necks associated with Mycoplasma meleagridis infection in a backyard flock of turkeys.

Two 5-week-old bronze turkeys were submitted with crooked necks that could not be straightened. Both birds were serologically and culturally positive for Mycoplasma meleagridis (MM). Histologically, there were lymphoid follicles in the cranial thoracic and cervicoclavicular air sacs, and inflammatory changes in the cartilage of some cervical vertebrae. This appeared to be a case of MM-associated wry necks.

Klippel-Feil syndrome in two Ethiopian children.

Klippel-Feil syndrome or congenital short neck is a rare malformation in which there is congenital fusion of two or more vertebrae in the cervical region. In some patients it is associated with other congenital malformations in the skeleton, lung and heart. Two cases of Klippel-Feil syndrome in children who also had cardiovascular malformations are described and the literature is reviewed.

Inco-ordination and paresis in a captive lion (Panthera leo).

An adult female lion (Panthera leo) with hind- and forequarter paresis and inco-ordination was examined. An initial diagnosis of a vitamin A deficiency was made, but treatment proved ineffective. A radiological examination showed mild pressure on the spinal cord. A tentative diagnosis of trauma to the cervical vertebrae was made. Response to conservative therapy suggested an aetiology of traumatic origin.

Stenosis and movement of the cervical spine in cervical myelopathy.

The width of the spinal canal in 55 patients with cervical myelopathy was compared to a control group of 225 patients without myelopathy. There was a statistically significant narrowing of the cervical canal in the patients with cervical myelopathy, especially in men. Neck movement in the sagittal plane was studied in pantopaque myelograms in 43 patients with cervical myelopathy. It was found that retroflexion causes the most severe narrowing of the spinal canal. Patients with congenital cervical stenosis showed the greatest changes. Sagittal movement of the cervical spine was measured 1--3 ye

Maurice Klippel.

Maurice Klippel (1858-1942) was a turn-of-the-century French internist with a special interest in neurology and psychiatry. He authored numerous medical papers in these disciplines, but is best known to spine surgeons for his description, co-authored with Andre Feil, of a patient with congenital fusion of the cervical vertebrae, a condition now known as Klippel-Feil syndrome.

Delayed presentation of manubriosternal dislocation after thoracolumbar spondylodesis in a polytrauma patient - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Manubriosternal dislocations are a rare entity and frequently associated with thoracic spine fractures and, in minority of cases, with cervical or thoracolumbar fractures. METHODS: Our case represents a 38-year-old male who fell from a height resulting in multiple fractures, amongst others of the first lumbar vertebra. At primary survey and computed tomography scan no manubriosternal injury was apparent. After posterior stabilization of the thoracolumbar vertebrae a manubriosternal dislocation was identified and stabilized using plate-and-screw fixation. RESULTS: Clinical finding

A radiographic study of variations of the human fetal spine.

Variations of the vertebral column were considered to be those deviations from the norm which were still compatible with normal life and not pathological. The incidence of these variations is described as seen radiographically in a group of normal human fetuses. Ossification centers for the costal processes of cervical vertebra 7 were found to be common (19%), being present in approximately one-fifth of the total number of fetuses studied. They were mostly present as bilateral centers (15%), but because of the cross-sectional nature of the study, it could not be determined whether these center

Development of a finite element neck model for head-first compressive impacts: Toward the assessment of motorcycle neck protective equipment.

Head-first compressive impacts occur in motorcycle crashes and may result in serious to fatal neck injuries to riders. Equipment to protect the riders' necks from these injuries are available in the market; however, their effectiveness in reducing injury risk is not clear, either due to the lack of scientific evidences or assessment with any prevalently accepted standard. This paper presents a finite element ligamentous neck model, developed as a computationally efficient tool, for future use in the computational phase of assessment process of neck protective equipment. The 3D cervical spine w

[Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the spine].

BACKGROUND: Epithelioid hemangioendotheliomas are rare vascular tumors, mostly originating from soft tissue, lungs or liver. CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old woman was admitted to hospital because of upper congestion, Horner's syndrome and segmental sensory disturbance. MRI of the spine showed a spinal mass, reaching from the seventh cervical vertebra to the fourth chest vertebra. Because of worsening of upper congestion and progressive neurological impairment, the patient had to be operated twice. Unfortunately a surgical excision of the infiltrating tumor in sano was not possible and the patient
