Varicella-Zoster virus is responsible for chickenpox and, after reactivation, herpes zoster. Herpes zoster causes a vesicular dermatomal rash, traditionally metameric. Old adults can present severe pain during the acute phase, and late complications, such as post-herpetic neuralgia that can trying and crippling. Initiated within the first 72 hours of the rash, antivirals accelerate rash healing, reducing both rash and acute pain severity but incompletely the onset of other complications. Complementary therapeutic drug is often necessary. However, their application in old, frail, co-morbid and …

Three healthy boys, 3.5, 5 and 1.5 years of age, were admitted to hospital with a severe bacterial skin infection, cerebellar ataxia, and pneumonia, respectively, one week after the onset of varicella. They recovered completely after treatment. Studies in Europe report complications from varicella in 2.5% of healthy children. Most of these are neurological complications and secondary bacterial infections of skin and soft tissue. Last year, a European consensus was published that recommended that all healthy children be vaccinated against chickenpox. In The Netherlands, routine varicella zoster…

1. Early recognition by clinicians of illnesses suggesting a biological attack is integral to the public health response. 2. The four biological agents of most concern are smallpox virus, botulinum toxin, and anthrax and plague bacteria. 3. Smallpox is distinguishable from chickenpox by the prominent prodromal period and lesions that develop at the same pace and, on any part of the body, appear identical to each other, evolve slowly and are peripherally distributed. 4. The degree of protection conferred by smallpox vaccination given 20 or more years ago is unknown. 5. Foodborne and inhalationa…

Clinicians and nurses should obtain a history of antecedent illness occurring within 2 weeks of the onset of vomiting. Ninety percent of school-age children will give a history of an antecedent illness (varicella or influenza-like respiratory illness) within 1 week of the onset of vomiting. The vomiting of Reye's syndrome is usually persistent, lasting for 24 to 96 hours before the onset of serious brain signs. We believe that any child with the history of flu or chickenpox within 1 week of the onset of vomiting, which lasts for more than 12 hours, and is unusually severe or is associated with…

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic varicella (HV) is a particular form of chicken pox.,with high mortality in adults. This form of the disease is rare, to date, approximately 4 cases have been reported. Occasional cases of HV have been documented in adults with hematologic disorders or other diseases. While there is one reported case of simultaneous reactivation of cytomegalovirus in an adult with chickenpox, there is a lack of information regarding changes in liver function indicators for such patients. This is unfortunate, as CMV reactivation can further exacerbate liver failure and increase mortality.…

BACKGROUND: Varicella is a significant global health burden, yet the specific impact of ambient temperature on varicella incidence remains insufficiently understood. This study aims to quantify the association between ambient temperature and varicella risk through a systematic review and meta-analysis.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of studies from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and CNKI databases (up to January 7, 2025). We included studies that assessed temperature effects on varicella incidence and excluded those on animals, serology, reviews, or unpublished data. Usi

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is a human alphaherpesvirus that causes varicella (chicken pox) as the primary infection in a susceptible host. Varicella is very contagious through its transmission by direct contact with vesicular skin lesions that contain high titers of infectious virus and respiratory droplets. While the clinical manifestations of primary VZV infection are well recognized, defining the molecular mechanisms that drive VZV pathogenesis in the naive host before adaptive antiviral immunity is induced has been a challenge due to species specificity. This review focuses on advances m

Little concern has been paid to the relationship between temperature and varicella among adults. Daily meteorological data and varicella cases in Qingdao among adults from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2019 were collected. A combination of quasi-Poisson generalized additive model (GAM) and distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was conducted to assess the temperature-lag-varicella relationship. We also estimated the lag-response curves for different temperatures and the exposure-response relationships for different lag days. The number of varicella cases was 10,296. Compared with the minimum-

INTRODUCTION: Some viral infections are associated with deep venous thrombosis. We report a case of deep venous thrombosis in an adult with varicella. He had neither known predisposing factors for thrombosis nor thrombophilia.
EXEGESIS: Transient significant level of antiphospholipid antibodies and lupus circulating anticoagulant were observed. There was no evidence of thrombophilia. Deep venous thrombosis has been mostly associated with varicella in children. A transient protein S deficiency was present in almost all cases, though it was sometimes related to an anti-protein S antibody. This

The aim of this study was to determine the factors affecting hepatitis B vaccine immunogenicity among nursing staff of Teaching Hospital, Jaffna. 152 nursing staffs were recruited from April to July 2013. Those who received three doses had 7.7% failure rate in developing protective immune response. Failure rates were 20% in those who received one dose and 10.6% in two doses. Following vaccination, participants who had chickenpox had a failure rate of 75% (n=13; p=0.02). Pregnancy significantly impaired protective immunity among those who received two doses (p=0.03). Three doses of hepatitis B …

Herpes zoster (HZ) is one of the most common complications after bone marrow transplantation (BMT) in children. Apart from treatment with antiviral drugs, effective prevention by active immunization with varicella-zoster virus (VZV) appears to be possible. In this study 15 patients were vaccinated with a live attenuated VZV vaccine (Varilrix) 12-23 months after BMT. The vaccine was well tolerated without adverse reactions. Chickenpox or HZ were not observed for up to 2 years after immunization. Eight out of nine seronegative patients seroconverted and in six virus-specific IgG could still be d…

A review of all medical reports on patients discharged from the Central Hospital in Viborg from 1974 to 1986 after measles (M), mumps (F), German measles (R), or chickenpox (S) revealed a total of 294 patients suffering from complications, 128 after M, 142 after F, 9 after R, and 15 after S. A total of 373 complications was encountered. Neurologic complications were seen in 166 cases most frequently after F, and superinfection was seen in 105 cases most frequently after M. Sequelae were seen in 3 cases of M, 2 cases of S. and in one case of R. In all cases sequelae were caused by damage in the…

Varicella, known as chickenpox, is caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), with an estimated 84 million cases annually. It primarily affects children, for most of whom it is a self-limiting illness. However, there are an estimated 950 000 disability-adjusted life years attributed to VZV annually, disproportionately affecting lower-income settings. Children with impaired immunity and neonates are particularly at risk for severe varicella. Epidemiology varies between tropical and temperate regions with infections occurring at an earlier age in temperate climates.Varicella is a vaccine-preven…

Varicella vaccine was first licensed in Japan and South Korea in 1989 for use in healthy children and was introduced in US in 1995. So far, 29 countries have adopted varicella vaccine in their universal immunization program (UIP). No Asian country, India included, has adopted the varicella vaccine as part of their UIP. The extra-cutaneous sites for VZV diseases are central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract, the expanded disease spectrum includes vasculopathy, myelitis, inflammatory bowel disease, perforated ulcers, and gastritis. The actual disease burden of varicella is not known as m
