[Isolation of Rift Valley fever virus from bats in the Republic of Guinea].

Virological investigations of bats performed in the territory of Republic of Guinea permitted for the first time to isolate from the bats Micropteropus pusillus and Hipposideros abae two strains which were identified as R. V. F. V. Serological investigation revealed specific antibodies to R. V. F. V. among natives in 3.3% and among domestic animals in 6.8%. It is supposed that bats are reservoir of this virus. They can transmit agent of R. V. F. by means of mosquitoes or by being part of the native diet.

Plasma progesterone levels during pregnancy in the little brown bat Myotis lucifugus (Vespertilionidae).

Plasma progesterone was measured by radioimmunoassay in individual female Myotis lucifugus throughout pregnancy and lactation. Progesterone levels, which averaged 6.7 +/- 0.7 ng/ml in late hibernation, rose to a mean of 18.9 +/- 6.7 ng/ml in unimplanted bats collected in the first two weeks after arrival at a maternity roost. Analysis of progesterone levels in bats in which the developmental stage of the embryo was known revealed two sharp, transient increases in plasma progesterone during the preimplantation period. The first, with values of 30-45 ng/ml, occurred at ovulation. The second, wit

The mycelial status and reversibility in Histoplasma capsulatum.

The highly variable mycelial phase cultures of Histoplasma capsulatum are generally described as brown to albino colonies with the albino type overtaking the brown in a unidirectional and mainly irreversible process. In this study it was found that cultures could be reversed from albino to brown type by manipulation of substrates. As the cultural morphology and stability were shown to be essentially substrate-dependent, the mycelial status of this organism was reassessed. It is proposed that albino and intermediate variants are usually artificially induced by conventional refined carbohydrate

The megachiropteran pineal organ: a comparative morphological and volumetric investigation with special emphasis on the remarkably large pineal of Dobsonia praedatrix.

This investigation is based upon the pineal organs of 92 specimens of 36 species of the family Pteropodidae (Mammalia, Chiroptera). The size of the megachiropteran pineal correlates well with body size (r = 0.864), confirming the former conclusions that generally larger bodied bats have larger pineals. The range of the pineal size index in 36 megachiropteran species is from 33 to 4393. In most species the pineal organs are small, deeply recessed under the cerebral hemispheres and of Type A (except in Dobsonia and Pteropus, where they are of Type alpha beta C and AB, respectively). Morphologica…

High diversity and novel host associations of bat haemosporidian parasites in Cambodia: insights from a nationwide bat survey and multilocus analyses.

BACKGROUND: Haemosporidian ("malaria") parasites are a diverse group of vector-borne apicomplexan parasites that infect a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including humans. Bats harbour a remarkable diversity of haemosporidians and are considered important hosts in the evolution of mammalian haemosporidian lineages, yet parasite diversity, host associations, and evolutionary relationships remain poorly understood, particularly in biodiversity-rich Southeast Asia. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide molecular survey of 1180 bats representing 34 species across Cambodia and combined extensive samp

Nipah Virus Shedding in Urine from Fruit Bats, Sri Lanka, 2018-2019.

Nipah virus causes outbreaks in humans with high case-fatality rates. In this study, we confirmed the presence of Nipah virus in Sri Lanka in Pteropus medius fruit bats, one of the known natural reservoir species. Sequences we generated were genetically related to Nipah virus strains from outbreaks in southern India.

Seasonal changes in the transcriptome of bat eyes reveal adaptive changes to exploit summer twilight.

Sensory systems of many organisms display periodic adjustments to accommodate cyclical changes in the local environmental conditions. Seasonal fluctuations in visual perception are documented in many species, including humans, but the mechanisms and ecological significance of these adaptations often remain obscure. Despite limited knowledge of bat visual ecology relative to hearing, the diversity of bat species makes them useful models for studying sensory adaptation mechanisms. Here, we analyze daily and seasonal changes in gene expression in the eyes of a temperate echolocating bat, the Mexi

Genomic characterization of Lao Mobatvirus strains reveals host-associated clustering in Southeast Asian bats.

While members of the genus Orthohantavirus are well-established human pathogens, the zoonotic potential of bat-associated hantavirids, particularly those within the genus Mobatvirus, remains largely unresolved. To investigate the genetic diversity of these lineages in Southeast Asia, we conducted an expanded surveillance programme in Lao PDR from May 2023 to October 2025 in bat populations and wild animals from local wet markets. Using molecular screening and deep sequencing to characterize hantavirids from bat populations and wild animals from local wet markets, we identified 20 positive samp

Commensal and pathogenic bacteria of the respiratory tract of bats from Catalonia, North-Eastern Spain.

Bats host a diverse range of commensal and potentially pathogenic microorganisms, yet bacterial infections remain underrepresented in bat health research. This study investigated the diversity of bacteria of the respiratory tract in bats from Catalonia, North-Eastern Spain, including free-ranging individuals and those admitted to a wildlife rehabilitation centre. Oropharyngeal swabs were collected and processed for microbiological analysis from 182 apparently healthy bats belonging to 14 species, and from 28 bats admitted to the wildlife rehabilitation centre. Additionally, necropsy, microbiol

From flyways to foci: a systematic review and meta-analysis on the role of birds in the maintenance and global dispersal of ticks and tick-borne pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Birds (Aves) are considered to play important roles in the dissemination of ticks and tick-borne pathogens, yet the global extent of their contribution to vector maintenance and long-distance dispersal remains poorly quantified. This study provides a comprehensive global synthesis of bird-associated ticks (BATs) and bird-associated tick-borne pathogens (BATBPs) to characterize the epidemiological roles of birds and assess the resulting public health and biosecurity risks. METHODS: We systematically searched multiple bibliographic databases and GenBank up to February 2025 in accord

Specific interactions between bats and streblid flies in an urban Atlantic forest fragment.

Specificity patterns of host parasite interactions is a key component in disease ecology, varying considerably among groups. Hematophagous flies of families Streblidae and Nycteribiidae are obligate ectoparasites of bats exhibiting high host specificity from millions of years of coevolution. Despite Brazilian megadiversity of bats and parasitic flies, knowledge about these interactions in fragmented urban environments remains limited, crucial for understanding urbanization effects. This study characterized diversity and network structure between bats and ectoparasitic flies (Diptera: Streblida

Inhabiting the host: ectoparasites and Vector-Borne pathogens in Phyllostomidae bats within urban forest fragments.

While bats are known to harbor various viruses and bacteria, their role as hosts for hemoparasites has not been extensively studied. This research investigated the presence of ectoparasites and vector-borne pathogens-including Anaplasmataceae agents, hemoplasmas, apicomplexans, and kinetoplastids-in 74 Phyllostomidae bats sampled from an urban forest fragment in southeastern Brazil. Overall, 31.1% of the bats were infested with ectoparasites: 82.6% carried only Streblidae bat flies, 13.0% had only mites, and 4.4% were co-infested with both parasites. No hemoparasites were observed in Giemsa-st

Multi-species foraging on a Marburg virus bat reservoir.

Understanding zoonotic spillover requires observation of reservoir-host interfaces, yet direct multi-species behavioral data remain rare. During long-term carnivore monitoring in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda, we deployed camera traps at Python Cave, a roost for Egyptian fruit bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus) and known Marburg-virus reservoir. Over the course of 368 trap nights, we recorded > 14 vertebrate species engaging in predation, scavenging, guano foraging, or exploration across 321 events, alongside 214 human visitors. The shallow cave structure collapses spatial separation between

Rabies, host population structure, and cross-species transmission to the migratory bat Tadarida brasiliensis in Chile.

Although many bat species migrate, the consequences of migration for bat population structure and rabies virus transmission remain poorly understood. Understanding the spatiotemporal dynamics of bat rabies (Lyssavirus rabies) transmission is important to prevent rabies spillovers to dead-end hosts, including humans. Here, focusing on the long-distance migratory Brazilian free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) in South America, we identify the extent of host population and rabies virus structure across Chile. The analysis of 112 cytochrome b sequences from T. brasiliensis individuals and 144 r

Rabies virus infection and immune activation in human epidermal keratinocytes: Implications for rabies transmission.

Rabies is a fatal zoonotic infection caused by rabies virus (RABV), which is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals. Although most cases are caused by dog bites, superficial exposures such as bat bites or scratches can also lead to infection, although the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. We recently detected RABV-positive keratinocytes in skin samples of experimentally infected mice and naturally infected dogs, prompting us to investigate their role in rabies pathogenesis and the antiviral immune response. We confirmed that both the keratinocyte cell line HaCaT and p
