OBJECTIVE: To determine whether low maternal serum concentrations of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) were associated with poor pregnancy outcome.
METHODS: Between 1999 and 2000, 20,880 women underwent triple test screening in our hospital. The levels of hCG were detected by fluorescent immunoassay. Low hCG levels (< or = 0.20 MoM in our center) were considered to be a marker for increased risk for trisomy 18 or adverse pregnancy outcome. In dairy ewes, the use of eCG as a convenient hormone for the induction of ovulation is necessary for out-of-season breeding and artificial insemination (AI). We have developed a simple and rapid time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (TR-FIA) for simultaneous determination of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and estriol (E3) using europium and samarium ion chelate. A prospective study was undertaken to evaluate possibility of expectant management of ectopic pregnancy in a selected group of patients with few symptoms, no gestational sac on sonography, and rising but low beta hCG levels. Sex hormone-binding globulin serum concentrations (SHBG) were measured before and after a 5-day hCG stimulation test in 11 prepubertal boys with cryptorchidism, 6 with anorchia, 5 with male pseudohermaphroditism, and 5 with micropenis. Hepatoblastoma was diagnosed in a 12 month old boy presenting with hepatomegaly and isosexual precocious puberty. Preoperative levels of both alpha-1-fetoprotein (AFP) and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) were highly elevated. The tumor was removed by hepatic trisegmentectomy.
