OBJECTIVE: Carotid body tumors (CBT) are benign tumors that originate from neural non-chromaffin cells that are typically localized near carotid bifurcation. Surgical removal of the tumor is the most appropriate treatment. General anesthesia is preferred anesthetic technique for CBT surgery. Basic elements of anesthetic management are protection of hemodynamic stability and maintaining cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP). The aim of this study was to evaluate anesthetic management of CBT surgery and present the literature knowledge.
METHODS: The study included 10 consecutive patients with diagn…

The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of ketamine, a dissociative anesthetics, on secretion of catecholamines (CA) secreti … Ca(2+) and Na(+) through voltage-dependent Ca(2+) and Na(+) channels into the rat adrenal medullary chromaffin cells as well as by inhibiting Ca(2+) release from the cytoplasmic calcium store, which are relevant to the blockade of cholinergic receptors. It is also thought that, on the basis of concentrations, ketamine causes similar inhibitory effect with thiopent …

Neuropeptide Y is co-stored with noradrenaline in peripheral sympathetic nerves, but is not present in the adrenal chromaffin cells in the pig. Plasma levels of neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity and catecholamines were studied upon haemorrhagic shock in the anaesthetized pig. The animals were bled in two successive steps (30 and 10 ml kg-1), resulting in a reduction of the mean arterial blood pressure by 44% and 53%, respectively. Plasma levels of noradrenaline increased abruptly after the first bleeding from 1.21 +/- 0.27 to 26.5 +/- 6.3 nmol l-1. Plasma neuropeptide Y showed a progressive…

In the human gastrointestinal tract the amphicrine cells are described as a special form of endocrine cells. Depending on their behaviour under silver impregnation, they are divided into three subgroups: the mucoargentaffine, the mucoargyrophilic and the mucoargyrophobic cells. They were detected electron microscopically in 1969, but they were histologically verified and identified as mucus-excreting endocrine elements only in 1977. Since 1969 such cells have also been observed in normal and regenerating rat and mouse stomachs. Our own human material includes stomach (3 cases), appendix (12 ca

Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PGLs) are rare neural crest-derived neuroendocrine neoplasms with highly variable clinical behavior and limited therapeutic options in metastatic disease. From a pathologic perspective, diagnosis and risk assessment have traditionally relied on histomorphology and immunohistochemistry. However, conventional parameters remain insufficient to reliably predict biological behavior. Over the past decade, genomic and transcriptomic profiling have refined molecular classification, yet genotype-based stratification alone does not fully explain heterogeneity in tum

Pheochromocytoma (PHEO) is an uncommon neuroendocrine tumor originating from the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla. These tumors are capable of producing and releasing substantial amounts of catecholamine (CA) hormones. Individuals with PHEO often experience transient blood pressure fluctuations, headaches, and palpitations, among other symptoms. In extreme cases, they may develop severe complications, including cardiovascular and cerebrovascular incidents, myocardial disorders, and gastrointestinal issues. At the advanced stage, PHEO can affect multiple organs, potentially leading to ph…

Paragangliomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors that arise from chromaffin cells that can be sympathetic or parasympathetic in nature. Paragangliomas are closely related to pheochromocytomas, which are also a form of neuroendocrine tumor arising from the adrenal medulla (Chen et al., 2010; García-Carbonero et al., 2021). Paragangliomas of sympathetic origin are often secretory in nature, causing symptoms such as headache, palpitations, excessive perspiration, and high blood pressure, and are most often found along the sympathetic chain. Common locations include the abdomen, skull base, bladder, …

INTRODUCTION: A paraganglioma (PGL) is a tumour derived from extra-adrenal chromaffin cells of the sympathetic paravertebral ganglia of the thorax, abdomen, and pelvis. Cardiovascular manifestations predominate but neurological symptoms like seizures can occur requiring a high index of suspicion for prompt diagnosis and treatment. Case Description. A 14-year-old girl was referred to the paediatric neurology unit for recurrent headaches of one-year duration, vomiting of 2 months duration, and an episode of generalized tonic-clonic seizures, 2 weeks prior to presentation. There was an associated…

Pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL) are rare neuroendocrine tumors arising from adrenal and extra-adrenal chromaffin cells. They produce excessive amounts of catecholamines and their metabolites. A newly analytical procedure based on the semi-automated microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS) technique, using a digitally controlled syringe (eVol) combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), was developed to quantify free urinary catecholamines and metanephrines. The important parameters affecting MEPS performance, namely the type of sorbent material (porous gr…

INTRODUCTION: Paragangliomas, defined as extra-adrenal chromaffin-cells tumors, are rarely located in the retro-peritoneum. Clinical presentation is similar to pheochromocytoma, and mainly depends on the producing character of the tumor. Positive diagnosis requires plasmatic and urinary hormonal assays. Radiological and isotopic explorations are essential before surgery. The only curative therapeutic strategy is surgical, associated to peri-operative prevention and monitoring of the frequently reported hemodynamic and cardiovascular disorders. Outcome depends of the metastatic character of the

Anxiety, a normal response to stressful situations, is characterized by increased levels of factor VIII, fibrinogen, and von Willebrand factor, and by enhanced platelet aggregability. One would expect acute anxiety to be a prothrombotic state, but since acute mental stress induces tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) release from endothelial and chromaffin cells, fibrinolysis counteracts procoagulant stimuli. It could be said that procoagulant changes accompanying the fight-or-flight response reduce the risk of bleeding in case of potential injuries, while activation of fibrinolysis counteracts …

BACKGROUND: Neuroblastoma (NB), a childhood tumor derived from the sympathetic nervous system, presents with heterogeneous clinical behavior … d a sequential expression of ERα, GR, and RARα during development from progenitor to differentiated chromaffin cells. Further, in silico analysis revealed that patients with higher combined expression of GR, ERα, and RARα mRNA levels had elevated expression of neuronal differentiation markers and a favorable outcome.
CONCLUSION: Together, our findings suggest tha …

WE-14 is derived from the cell-specific posttranslational processing of chromogranin A (CgA) in subpopulations of neuroendocrine cells and neurons. Region- and site-specific chromogranin A, pancreastatin and WE-14 antisera were employed to study the generation of WE-14 in porcine ocular tissues. No chromogranin A or pancreastatin immunostaining was detected in ocular tissue. Immunohistochemistry detected WE-14 immunostaining in a network of nerve fibre bundles and nerve fibres throughout the limbus, cornea, iris and ciliary body with sparse nerve fibres detected throughout the choroid and scle

There are five subtypes of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (M(1) to M(5)) which control a large number of physiological processes, such as the function of heart and smooth muscles, glandular secretion, release of neurotransmitters, gene expression and cognitive functions as learning and memory. A selective ligand is very useful for studying the function of a subtype in presence of other subtypes, which is the most common situation, since a cell or an organ usually has several subtypes. There are many non-selective muscarinic ligands, but only few selective ones. Mambas, African snakes of ge

The neuropeptide galanin (GAL) is widely distributed in the central and peripheral nervous systems, anterior pituitary, and adrenal medulla. GAL is colocalized with corticotropin (ACTH) in the human pituitary and with epinephrine (E) and norepinephrine (NE) in chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla. The function of GAL in peripheral tissues is not known, although the presence of the peptide in corticotrophs and the adrenal gland suggest that it participates in stress responses. In the present study, we investigated whether GAL is cosecreted with ACTH during activation of corticotrophs by an a…
