Simultaneous nitrate and chromium removal mechanism in a pyrite-involved mixotrophic biofilter.

Microbially mediated NO3--N and Cr(VI) reduction is being recognized as an eco-friendly and cost-effective remediation strategy. Iron sulfide mineral, as a natural inorganic electron donor, has a strong influence on NO3--N and Cr(VI) transformation, respectively. However, little is known about the simultaneous nitrate and chromium removal performance and underlying mechanism in an iron sulfide mineral-involved mixotrophic biofilter. This study demonstrated that the NO3--N and Cr(VI) removal efficiencies were stable at 62 ± 8% and 56 ± 10%, and most of them were eliminated in the 0-100-mm regio…

Reduction and precipitation of chromium(VI) using a palladized membrane biofilm reactor.

H2-driven reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) using precious-metal catalysts is promising, but its implementation in water treatment has been restricted by poor H2-transfer efficiency and high catalyst loss. We investigated the reduction of Cr(VI) through hydrogenation catalyzed by elemental-palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) generated in-situ within biofilm of a membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR), creating a Pd-MBfR. Experiments were conducted using a Pd-MBfR and a non-Pd MBfR. The Pd-MBfR achieved Cr(VI) (1000 μg L-1) reduction of >99 % and reduced the concentration of total Cr to below 50 μ…

Group theory analysis of phonons in monolayer chromium trihalides and their Janus structures.

A contrastive investigation of the symmetry aspects of phonons in monolayer chromium trihalides and their Janus structures Y3-Cr2-X3 (X, Y = F, Cl, Br, I) was presented within group theory. We classified all phonon vibration modes at the Brillouin-zone center (Γ) into irreducible representations. The infrared and Raman activity of optic phonons, Raman tensors, and the possible polarization assignments of Raman active phonons are further predicted. We clarify the discrepancy concerning the Raman and infrared activity of optic modes in monolayer CrI3. It is also found that the Raman and infrared…

Mechanisms for the dissolved biochar promoted iron dissolution and consequential chromium release.

Biochar is widely applied in soil for agricultural and environmental purposes. Soluble fraction of biochar may be released from bulk biochar as dissolved biochar (DBC) after irrigation or rainfall. DBC had been reported to possess high chemical activity in aqueous system, while less attention was paid to the impact of DBC on the soil environmental processes. In this work, the impact of DBC on ferric (hydro) oxides was systematically examined. Our study showed that DBC prepared from rice straw could significantly promote the dissolution of ferric oxides with unstable and metastable crystalline

Adsorption of Hexavalent Chromium by Sodium Alginate Fiber Biochar Loaded with Lanthanum.

Lanthanun oxide (La2O3) is a lanthanum chemical compound incorporates a sensible anionic complexing ability; however, it lacks stability at a low pH scale. Biochar fibers will give the benefit of their massive space and plethoric uses on the surface to support a metal chemical compound. Herein, wet spinning technology was used to load La3+ onto sodium alginate fiber, and to convert La3+ into La2O3 through carbonization. The La2O3-modified biochar (La-BC) fiber was characterized by SEM, XRD and XPS, etc. An adsorption experiment proved that La-BC showed an excellent adsorption capacity for chro

Cancer mortality and exposure to nickel and chromium compounds in a cohort of Italian electroplaters.

BACKGROUND: Nickel and chromium-VI compounds are carcinogens for lung cancer, although it is still debated if there is an increased risk at low levels of exposure and for other cancers. METHODS: In a cohort of 2991 Italian electroplaters, a proportion of whom were exposed to low levels of nickel and/or chromium, cumulative exposure to their compounds was obtained by multiplying average concentrations of the metals in each electroplating tank by duration of employment in the company. The association of exposure to compounds with mortality was assessed by multivariable Cox models. RESULTS: No …

Urinary chromium is associated with changes in leukocyte miRNA expression in obese subjects.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Epidemiological studies suggest a link between chromium (Cr) status and cardiovascular disease. Increased urinary excretion of Cr was reported in subjects with diabetes compared with non-diabetic controls and those with non-diabetic insulin resistance. Epigenetic alterations have been linked to the presence of Cr, and microRNA (miRNA) expression has been implicated in the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). We investigated the association between Cr excretion and miRNA expression in leukocytes from obese subjects. We also examined the r…

Mechanistic investigation of toxicity of chromium oxide nanoparticles in murine fibrosarcoma cells.

Chromium oxide nanoparticles (Cr2O3NPs) are widely used in polymers and paints. In the present study, we aimed to determine the toxicity of Cr2O3NPs in murine fibrosarcoma (L929) cells. The cytotoxicity of Cr2O3NPs was measured by MTT and neutral red uptake assays; Cr2O3NPs had significant cytotoxic effects on L929 cells. Enhancement of intracellular reactive oxygen species was observed in L929 cells after exposure to Cr2O3NPs. Cr2O3NPs produced caspase-3, indicating that exposure to Cr2O3NPs induced apoptosis. After exposure to Cr2O3NPs, the cellular glutathione level decreased and lipid pero…

Chromium Displacement in Subtropical Soils Fertilized with Hydrolysed Leather: A Laboratory Study.

Prolonged use of biosolids with high metal content may result in diffuse pollution across large regions, especially if such ions can move freely through the soil profile and reach underground water sources. The objective of this study was to verify whether Cr added to the soil surface in the form of hydrolysed leather or a soluble salt would migrate over significant distances in four subtropical soils differing in physical, chemical and mineralogical properties. Horizontal and vertical mobility were assessed in Petri dishes and small pots, respectively, using low (12 mg kg-1 soil) and high Cr

Influence of oxygenation on chromium redox reactions with manganese sulfide (MnS(s)).

Manganese sulfide (MnS(s)) minerals exist in sulfidic environments and can have unique reactive abilities because of sulfide, which is a known reductant, and Mn, the oxyhydroxides of which are known oxidants. This study elucidated the role of MnS(s) in controlling Cr speciation with implications on its fate and toxicity in the natural environment, specifically sulfidic sediments that undergo biogeochemical changes due to sediment resuspension during dredging, bioturbation, and flood events. In continuously mixed batch reaction experiments, aqueous CrVI reduction under anaerobic conditions occu

Studies on chemistry, spectroscopy and antioxidant activities of chromium(III)-hydrazide complexes.

Acid hydrazides are vital chemical entities due to their biological activities. Upon complexation with certain metal ions, their biological activities are known to be positively enhanced. The present work describes the synthesis of Cr(III)-hydrazide complexes, and their structural, spectroscopic and antioxidant properties to reveal their chemistry and biochemistry. Physical (magnetic moment, conductivity measurements), analytical (C, H, N and Cr analysis) and spectral (EI-Mass, FTIR) techniques are used for the characterization of synthesized compounds. All Cr(III)-hydrazide complexes exhibit

Characteristics and kinetics of hexavalent chromium reduction by gallic acid in aqueous solutions.

Gallic acid (GA) is a naturally occurring plant polyphenol compound. Experiments were conducted to study the kinetics and effects of pH, temperature, irradiation, and initial hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) concentration on Cr(VI) reduction by GA. Results indicated that Cr(VI) could be reduced to chromium oxide (Cr(III)) with GA in a wide range of pH values from 2.0 to 8.5. The reaction followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model with respect to Cr(VI) and GA in acid conditions (pH 2.0-5.0). However, the reaction did not follow the pseudo-first-order kinetic model at pH 6.5 and 8.5. Removal effic…

Peat and coconut fiber as biofilters for chromium adsorption from contaminated wastewaters.

Batch adsorption experiments were performed for the removal of chromium (III) and chromium (VI) ions from aqueous solutions using Canadian peat and coconut fiber. The Langmuir model was used to describe the adsorption isotherm. The maximum adsorption for peat reached 18.75 mg/g for Cr(III) and 8.02 mg/g for Cr(VI), whereas the value for fiber was slightly higher and reached 19.21 mg/g for Cr(III) and 9.54 mg/g for Cr(VI). Both chromium forms could be easily eluted from the materials. The adsorption of chromium forms to organic matter could be explained in terms of formation of donor-acceptor c…

Effect of hexavalent chromium on histone biotinylation in human bronchial epithelial cells.

Chromium is a potent human mutagen and carcinogen. The capability of chromium to cause cancers has been known for more than a century, and numerous epidemiological studies have been performed to determine its carcinogenicity. In the post-genome era, cancer has been found to relate to epigenetic mutations. However, very few researches have focused on hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI))-induced epigenetic alterations. The present study was designed to investigate whether Cr(VI) would affect the level of a newfound epigenetic modification: histone biotinylation. Histone acetylation and histone biotinyla…

A XAFS study of plain and composite iron(III) and chromium(III) hydroxides.

Reduction of hexavalent Cr(VI) to the trivalent state is the common strategy for remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated waters and soils. In the presence of Fe the resulting compounds are usually mixed Fe(III)-Cr(III) phases, while, under iron-free conditions, reduction leads to formation of plain Cr(III) hydroxides. Environmental stability of these compounds depends on their structure and is important to understand how different precipitation conditions affect the local atomic order of resulting compounds and thus their long term stability. In current study, typical Cr(VI) environmental remediati
