Temperature-Attributable Cardiovascular Mortality in Europe Under Future Climate Scenarios: Projected Impacts of Population Aging and Climate Change to 2080.

AIMS: Heat and cold stress are established cardiovascular risk factors. As climate patterns shift and Europe's population ages, quantifying … ons with 1,000 Monte Carlo simulations. Daily mean temperature projections from five bias-corrected climate models were obtained under moderate (SSP2-4.5) and high (SSP5-8.5) emission scenarios. Population aging was incorporated using country-level age projections; climate-only analyses held age structure constant at 2020 levels. RESULTS: At baseline, non-optim …

Previously Unrecognized Land-Use Control on Deep Soil CO2 Sink.

Land-surface models commonly assume that soil CO2 production is rapidly transferred out of the soil profile, effectively equating respiration with near-surface signals. However, persistent subsoil CO2 enrichment despite limited in situ production reflects bidirectional exchange of topsoil-respired CO2, suggesting that the surface-centric assumption may not be universally valid. Here we combine year-round, multi-depth field observations with process-based modeling (DeepCO2) to quantify the effects of land use (croplands, forests, and forest-cropland edges) and climate on soil CO2 production-tra

Mapping current and future thermal limits to suitability for malaria transmission by the invasive mosquito Anopheles stephensi.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles stephensi is a malaria-transmitting mosquito that has recently expanded from its primary range in Asia and the Middle East, to locations in Africa. This species is a competent vector of both Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax malaria. Perhaps most alarming, the characteristics of An. stephensi, such as container breeding and anthropophily, make it particularly adept at exploiting built environments in areas with no prior history of malaria risk. METHODS: In this paper, global maps of thermal transmission suitability and people at risk (PAR) for malaria transmissi

Estimating impact likelihoods from probabilistic projections of climate and socio-economic change using impact response surfaces.

Estimates of future climate change impacts using numerical impact models are commonly based on a limited selection of projections of climate and other key drivers. However, the availability of large ensembles of such projections offers an opportunity to estimate impact responses probabilistically. This study demonstrates an approach that combines model-based impact response surfaces (IRSs) with probabilistic projections of climate change and population to estimate the likelihood of exceeding pre-specified thresholds of impact. The changing likelihood of exceeding impact thresholds during the 2

Therapeutic strategies to manage climate distress among young people.

The impact of climate change on mental health is increasingly evident, particularly among young people (16-25 years old), ranging from acute distress after extreme weather events to more persistent feelings of anxiety, grief, and uncertainty regarding the future. This Viewpoint explores how mental health care for young people can be improved to more effectively respond to the psychological impacts of climate change. Rather than proposing a new treatment model, this Viewpoint provides a starting point for clinicians by examining how existing therapeutic approaches could be applied, adapted, or

Current and future temperature suitability for autochthonous transmission of malaria in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to be one of the most significant infectious diseases in terms of morbidity and mortality. In many parts of North America, including parts of southern Canada, competent malaria vectors Anopheles quadrimaculatus and Anopheles freeborni are present. With climate change, Canada may be increasingly suitable for transmission of the malaria parasite Plasmodium spp. The objective of this study was to identify the geographic locations in Canada where, and the frequency with which, temperature conditions may be suitable for autochthonous transmission of Plasmodium vivax an

Harnessing the runoff reduction potential of urban bioswales as an adaptation response to climate change.

Nature-based solutions (NbS), including China's Sponge City Program (SCP), can address the challenges urban communities face due to surface runoff and flooding. The current capacity of SCP facilities in urban environments falls short of meeting the demands placed on communities by climate change. Bioswales are a form of SCP facility that plays an important role in reducing surface runoff by promoting infiltration. This study assesses the potential of SCP facilities to reduce runoff in urban communities under climate change using the storm water management model. The study site in Ningbo, China

Dynamics of tick-borne disease systems: minor role of recent climate change.

Tick-borne disease systems are very sensitive to climate through the impact of temperature and moisture stress on rates of the demographic processes of ticks. There is no a priori reason, however, to expect tick abundance or seasonal activity patterns to respond to climate change in ways that inevitably increase the risk of infection by the transmitted pathogens. Changing host availability may be more important than climate in determining tick abundance. The credibility of any (inherently untestable) predictions of future system-specific changes will be strengthened if based on satisfactory ex

The association between climatic factors and childhood illnesses presented to hospital emergency among young children.

There has been an increasing concern about the effect of climatic change on human health in recent years. It has been suggested that young children are particularly at risk due to the reduced regulating mechanism against extreme climatic changes. However, few studies on the associations between climatic factors and childhood illness, specifically among young children, have been found in the literature. This epidemiological study utilized data collected on all young patients aged less than 6 years who presented to an emergency department for a period of two years. Information on climate and out

The Alligator and the Mosquito: North American Crocodilians as Amplifiers of West Nile Virus in Changing Climates.

In an age of emerging zoonoses, it is important to understand the intricate system of vectors and reservoirs, or hosts, and their relation to humans. West Nile Virus (WNV) has been detected in a myriad of nonhuman hosts. Transmission of the virus to humans is reliant on amplified seroprevalence within the host, which occurs primarily in birds. However, recent studies have found that other animal groups, including crocodilians, can obtain seroprevalence amplification to levels that make them competent hosts able to transmit WNV to mosquitoes, which can then transmit to humans. Climate change co

Risk Assessment and Mapping of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease at the County Level in Mainland China Using Spatiotemporal Zero-Inflated Bayesian Hierarchical Models.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a worldwide infectious disease, prominent in China. China's HFMD data are sparse with a large number of observed zeros across locations and over time. However, no previous studies have considered such a zero-inflated problem on HFMD's spatiotemporal risk analysis and mapping, not to mention for the entire Mainland China at county level. Monthly county-level HFMD cases data combined with related climate and socioeconomic variables were collected. We developed four models, including spatiotemporal Poisson, negative binomial, zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP), an

Schistosomes, snails and climate change: Current trends and future expectations.

The exact impact of climate change on schistosomiasis, a disease caused by a blood fluke that affects more than 250 million people mainly in tropical and subtropical countries, is currently unknown, but likely to vary with the snail-parasite species' specific ecologies and the spatio-temporal scale of investigation. Here, by means of a systematic review to identify studies reporting on impacts of climate change on the agents of schistosomiasis, we provide an updated synthesis of the current knowledge about the climate change-schistosomiasis relation. We found that, despite a recent increase in

Deployment-oriented evaluation of stage-specific information for rice yield prediction across years, sites and site-year environments in southern China.

BACKGROUND: Reliable rice yield prediction requires machine-learning models with inputs that match the intended decision point and evaluation schemes that reflect the target deployment setting. Random record-level cross-validation remains common in crop-yield machine learning, but it can overestimate performance when models are transferred to future seasons, new sites or new site-year environments. METHODS: We developed a scenario-aware machine-learning framework using 3,204 yield records from 168 cultivars evaluated across 10 sites, 7 years and 67 site-year environments in southern China. Fi

Prenatal exposure to heat stress and postpartum depressive symptoms in the MADRES cohort in urban Los Angeles.

While extreme temperatures have been linked to adverse mental health outcomes, the impact of prenatal heat stress on postpartum depression remains understudied. We evaluated associations between prenatal heat stress and depressive symptoms one year postpartum, identified susceptible gestational windows, and assessed whether neighborhood climate vulnerability modifies maternal susceptibility to heat-related postpartum depression. We included 275 predominantly low-income Hispanic/Latina participants in the MADRES cohort. Residential wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT), is more reflective of physio

Leveraging explainable AI to predict soil respiration sensitivity and its drivers for climate change mitigation.

Global warming is one of the most pressing and critical problems facing the world today. It is mainly caused by the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide (CO2). Understanding how soils respond to rising temperatures is critical for predicting carbon release and informing climate mitigation strategies. Q10, a measure of soil microbial respiration, quantifies the increase in CO2 release caused by a [Formula: see text] Celsius rise in temperature, serving as a key indicator of this sensitivity. However, predicting Q10 across diverse soil types remains a challenge,

The abundance of Culex mosquito vectors for West Nile Virus and other flaviviruses: A time-series analysis of rainfall and temperature dependence in Singapore.

Culex mosquitoes are important vectors of West Nile Virus (WNV), St. Louis Encephalitis Virus (SLEV) and Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV). Climate change is expected to alter their ability to spread diseases in human populations. Studies examining the influence of climate variability on Culex mosquitoes in South East Asia are scarce. We examined the influence of climate variability on reported Culex mosquito larval habitats from 2009 to 2018 in Singapore. We analysed the non-linear immediate and lagged weather dependence of Culex habitats over 5 weeks in negative binomial regression models us
