In a randomised study, 28 patients with a mean age of 62.2 years (32 to 81) with osteoarthritis or avascular necrosis of the hip received either a ceramic-on-ceramic or a metal-on-metal total hip replacement. PURPOSE: Experimental partial bladder outlet obstruction of rats induces a bladder growth and remodeling process similar to that in humans with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Previously we have proposed that bladder hypoxia associated with partial bladder outlet obstruction is a stimulus of this bladder growth process. We report our results of testing the acute effects of a simple chemical agent (cobaltous ion) known to mimic hypoxia in the rat bladder. The effects of cobalt sulfate administered to pregnant C57BI mice, OFA-SD rats, and New Zealand rabbits was studied on fetal and postnatal offspring. Cobalt concentration in the maternal blood was increased in proportion to the administered doses. Cobalt crossed the placenta and appeared in the fetal blood and amniotic fluid. Following clinical observations carried out on numerous herds in different countries the authors show that many similarities exist between proteino-energetic malnutrition and some symptoms of copper, zinc or cobalt deficiencies in ruminants. The probable origin of such a relationship is highlighted and the possible use of trace element therapy in livestock under malnutrition conditions is discussed.

We studied a caecum-cannulated pony fed hay libitum in order to determine the mineral elements likely to cause deficiencies which decrease microbial activity in the caecum. During four successive 1-month periods, we observed the effects of adding 50 mg of iron, 1 mg of cobalt, 40 mg of copper and 200 mg of zinc, respectively.
