Spatial reasoning is critical across the STEM disciplines. Examining deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children's spatial reasoning in mathematics, particularly geometry, as an embodied phenomenon opens new possibilities for deaf education. The authors inquire into the embodied processes and forms of DHH learners' spatial reasoning, considering how such knowledge can expand access and conceptual opportunities for both DHH and hearing learners. The article focuses on the spatial reasoning of two grade 1 hard of hearing children as they complete a geometric task with a hearing peer in a mainstream

Theta burst stimulation (TBS) is a form of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) that can be used to increase (intermittent TBS) or reduce (continuous TBS) cortical excitability. The current study provides a preliminary report of the effects of iTBS and cTBS in healthy young adults, to investigate the causal role of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) during the performance of four cognitive functions: attention, inhibition, sequence learning and working memory. A 2 × 2 repeated measures design was incorporated using hemisphere (left/right) and TBS type (iTBS/cTBS) as the indepen

The mediodorsal thalamus (MD) and anterior thalamic nuclei (ATN) are two adjacent brain nodes that support our ability to make decisions, learn, update information, form and retrieve memories, and find our way around. The MD and PFC work in partnerships to support cognitive processes linked to successful learning and decision-making, while the ATN and extended hippocampal system together coordinate the encoding and retrieval of memories and successful spatial navigation. Yet, while these distinctions may appear to be segregated, both the MD and ATN together support our higher cognitive functio

BACKGROUND: The association between impaired social cognition and bipolar disorder (BD) is well established. However, to our knowledge, there has not been a recent systematic review that characterizes disparate dimensions of social cognition in BD. Herein, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize the literature on core aspects of social cognition (i.e., Theory of Mind, emotion recognition, and social judgment) to identify potential areas of impairment.
METHODS: Online databases (i.e., PubMed, Cochrane Libraries, PsycINFO) and Google Scholar were searched from inception to …

INTRODUCTION: Different types of learners based on sensory modalities are observed. Cognition or physiological alterations in the sensory pathways might play its role in different modalities of visual, auditory, read and write, and kinesthetic learners which are based on different sensory modalities of perception.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to ascertain an objective parameter (neurophysiological parameters) for the classification of learners based on their preferred sensory modality.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An experimental cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 medical s…

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is common in multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the relationship between cognitive deficits and microstructural abnormalities in Chinese MS patients remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the importance of microstructural abnormalities and the associations with cognitive impairment in Chinese MS patients.
METHODS: Three-dimensional T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were obtained from 36 relapsing remitting MS patients. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scans were acquired for 29 (81%) patients. Cognitive impairment was assessed using a comprehen

BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) present with a broad spectrum of nonmotor features including autonomic disorders. More severe autonomic dysfunction in PD is associated with increased cognitive deficits. The presence of cerebral small-vessel disease, measured by T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging white matter hyperintensity (WMH) burden, is also observed in patients with PD with faster cognitive decline.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether baseline orthostatic hypotension and autonomic dysfunction in early-stage PD affect later cognitive decline via mediation through cereb

Cerebral white matter pathology is a common CNS manifestation of Fabry disease, visualized as white matter hyperintensities on MRI in 42-81% … perintensities seen on conventional MRI. Moreover, diffusion measures show strong correlations with cognition (processing speed), clinical disease severity and a putative plasma biomarker of disease activity, making them promising quantitative biomarkers for monitoring Fabry disease severity and progression.

Patients with movement disorders experience fluctuations unrelated to disease progression or treatment. Extrinsic factors that contribute to the variable expression of movement disorders are environment related. They influence the expression of movement disorders through sensory-motor interactions and include somatosensory, visual, and auditory stimuli. Examples of somatosensory effects are stimulus sensitivity of myoclonus on touch and sensory amelioration in dystonia but also some less-appreciated effects on parkinsonian tremor and gait. Changes in visual input may affect practically all typ

White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are brain white matter lesions that are hyperintense on fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Larger WMH volumes have been associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and with cognitive decline. However, the relationship between WMH volumes and cross-sectional cognitive measures has been inconsistent. We hypothesize that this inconsistency may arise from 1) the presence of AD-specific neuropathology that may obscure any WMH effects on cognition, and 2) varying criteria for creating a WMH segmentation. Manual and au…

During our everyday lives, we are confronted with a vast amount of information from several sensory modalities. This multisensory information needs to be appropriately integrated for us to effectively engage with and learn from our world. Research carried out over the last half century has provided new insights into the way such multisensory processing improves human performance and perception; the neurophysiological foundations of multisensory function; the time course for its development; how multisensory abilities differ in clinical populations; and, most recently, the links between multise

Evidence suggests that associations between the neurotransmitter dopamine and cognition are nonmonotonic and open to modulation by various other factors. The functional implications of a given level of dopamine may therefore differ from person to person. By applying latent-profile analysis to a large (n = 181) sample of adults aged 64-68 years, we probabilistically identified 3 subgroups that explain the multivariate associations between dopamine D2/3R availability (probed with 11C-raclopride-PET, in cortical, striatal, and hippocampal regions) and cognitive performance (episodic memory, worki…
