Cognitive Mechanisms Explaining the Relationship Between Post-Traumatic Stress and Post-Traumatic Growth in Survivors of Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: The ability to derive growth from a traumatic event, such as a cancer diagnosis, can facilitate effective adaptation to the chal … ionship between post-traumatic stress and growth and should be targeted in interventions to improve cognitive flexibility and resilience among breast cancer survivors.

Cognitive Changes in Pre-ataxic Spinocerebellar Ataxias: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Although traditionally recognized for motor impairment, evidence suggests that cognitive deficits may emerge before ataxia onset … ing pre-ataxic individuals with SCA1, SCA2, SCA3, and SCA36. Executive dysfunction, particularly in cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, and working memory, was the most frequent finding, assessed using the Trail Making Test, Stroop Test, and phonemic fluency tasks. Processing speed deficits were also commonly reported. Pre-ataxic SCA2 exhibited the most consiste …

Homocysteine, rather than age of onset, is a better predictor for cognitive function in older adults with bipolar disorder.

Balancing Flexibility and Interference in Working Memory.

Working memory is central to cognition, flexibly holding the variety of thoughts needed for complex behavior. Yet, despite its importance, working memory has a severely limited capacity, holding only three to four items at once. In this article, I review experimental and computational evidence that the flexibility and limited capacity of working memory reflect the same underlying neural mechanism. I argue that working memory relies on interactions between high-dimensional, integrative representations in the prefrontal cortex and structured representations in the sensory cortex. Together, these

The role of perseverative cognition and heart rate variability in high trait anxiety.

Anxiety is increasingly understood as a multidimensional phenomenon, shaped by the interaction of cognitive, emotional, and physiological processes. Dysregulation within these systems is thought to contribute both to the onset and to the persistence of anxious symptoms. Among cognitive factors, worry and rumination have been identified as key vulnerabilities, as they amplify physiological arousal and disrupt autonomic regulation. Heart rate variability (HRV), a robust index of autonomic flexibility, has been consistently linked to emotion regulation, with lower HRV reflecting greater susceptib

In this multiple single-cases study, we used dance to train sensorimotor synchronization (SMS), motor, and cognitive functions in children w … to improvements in SMS (reduced variability in paced tapping), balance, and executive functioning (cognitive flexibility), as well as in social skills (social cognition). The beneficial effects of the dance training were visible in all participants. Notably, gains were maintained 2 months after the intervention. Impaired hippocampal place cell dynamics in a mouse model of the 22q11.2 deletion.

Neurocognitive considerations in the treatment of attachment and complex trauma in children.

Accumulating evidence suggests that children suffering deprivation and maltreatment at critical times in their development often pay a cognitive toll. While children vary to the extent that neurocognitive domains are affected, those factors influence how children process, manage and understand traumatic and attachment experiences as well as how they respond to treatment. Current research on trauma and attachment favor some aspects of cognition over others. The literature discusses attention, memory, cognitive biases, internal working models, beliefs and attributions as ways that impact an indi

Cognitive reserve in aging.

Cognitive reserve explains why those with higher IQ, education, occupational attainment, or participation in leisure activities evidence less severe clinical or cognitive changes in the presence of age-related or Alzheimer's disease pathology. Specifically, the cognitive reserve hypothesis is that individual differences in how tasks are processed provide reserve against brain pathology. Cognitive reserve may allow for more flexible strategy usage, an ability thought to be captured by executive functions tasks. Additionally, cognitive reserve allows individuals greater neural efficiency, greate

Cognitive remediation therapy for patients with eating disorders: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Transdiagnostic Cognitive Remediation Therapy (TCRT) is a new adaptation of cognitive remediation therapy for eating disorders (EDs) developed to address common cognitive difficulties across ED diagnoses (i.e., cognitive flexibility, central coherence, and impulsivity). This is the first evaluation of this novel treatment. The aim of this study was to explore acceptability and patients' experience of TCRT. METHODS: Thirteen patients diagnosed with restrictive or binge/purge subtypes of EDs and concurrent cognitive difficulties completed semi-structured qualitative interviews after…

A randomized pilot trial of topiramate for alcohol use disorder in veterans with traumatic brain injury: Effects on alcohol use, cognition, and post-concussive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Topiramate is an effective treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) and has also been used in the care of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). This pilot study aimed to obtain a preliminary assessment of topiramate's efficacy in reducing alcohol use and post-concussive symptoms, and its potential negative impact on cognitive function in 32 Veterans with co-occurring AUD and mTBI. METHODS: This was a prospective 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study of flexible-dose topiramate or placebo. Combining cognitive remediation and metacognitive therapy for improving cognitive functions and reducing symptoms severity of adult patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder in Tehran, Iran: study protocol for a randomized, controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) experience various cognitive impairments, yet typical treatments do not address these deficits. Goal management training (GMT) is a structured cognitive remediation therapy to enhance executive function. GMT serves as a metacognitive strategy training, improving cognitive control and mindfulness related to executive dysfunction. Given OCD patients' challenges with attention flexibility and control, the efficacy of GMT may be enhanced when combined with a preparatory intervention that builds foundational metacognitive knowledge.
