Physical exercise reserved amyloid-beta induced brain dysfunctions by regulating hippocampal neurogenesis and inflammatory response via MAPK signaling.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the leading causes of dementia that induced by aggregation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) in brain tissue. With high structural and functional plasticity, hippocampus plays fundamental roles in cognitive regulation. Moreover, impaired hippocampal functions present during early onset of AD. Hence, targeting on improving hippocampal plasticity would be recognized as the effective strategy in AD therapy. Physical exercise is widely encouraged healthy life style. However, whether exercise could reserve the neural dysfunctions in AD model and the possible neurobiological me

Educational attainment and motor burden in advanced Parkinson's disease - The emerging role of education in motor reserve.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship of motor burden and educational attainment in patients with advanced stage PD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 102 consecutive patients who underwent a complete evaluation for DBS surgery, including detailed neuropsychological testing and UPDRSIII in a standardized Levodopa challenge. Years of education (YoE) were calculated as the highest grade attained in secondary school plus years for post-secondary training. RESULTS: The OFF medication UPDRS-III score was associated with YoE (p=0.006; t=-2.82) and age (p=0.007; t=-2.75) in our multivariable line

Selenomethionine reduces the deposition of beta-amyloid plaques by modulating β-secretase and enhancing selenoenzymatic activity in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the production of large amounts of beta-amyloid (Aβ) and the accumulation of extracellular senile plaques, which have been considered to be potential targets in the treatment of AD. Selenium (Se) is a nutritionally essential trace element with known antioxidant potential and Se status has been shown to decrease with age and has a close relationship with cognitive competence in AD. Selenomethionine (Se-Met), a major reserve form of Se in organisms, has been shown in our previous study to ameliorate the decline in cognitive function, increase oxidatio

The role of medium-intensity training in promoting functional independence and cognitive function in older adults: a randomized controlled trial.

Aging is associated with declines in physical and cognitive capacities, negatively affecting functional independence and quality of life. While physical exercise is recommended for healthy aging, uncertainty remains regarding the optimal training intensity for simultaneously supporting physical and cognitive outcomes. This study evaluated the effects of medium-intensity training (MIT) on functional independence and cognitive function in older adults. A six-month assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted with 72 community-dwelling older adults aged 60-70 years. Participants wer

Younger Age of First Exposure to American Football Is Associated with Worse Informant-Reported Clinical Outcomes in Older Age Brain Donors.

Although the younger age of first exposure (AFE) to American football has not been associated with neurodegenerative pathology, AFE has been … literature on AFE and clinical outcomes. The effects of AFE may only manifest in older adults when cognitive reserve is depleted, neuropathological resilience is reduced, or age-related vulnerabilities interact with prior head injury exposure, worsening clinical outcomes.

Dissecting the "Triple Hit" of Perioperative Neurocognitive Disorders after CABG: A Narrative Review of Microemboli, Hypoperfusion, and Inflammation.

Perioperative neurocognitive disorders, encompassing a spectrum from delirium to long-term cognitive decline, remain one of the most significant and prevalent complications following coronary artery bypass grafting, profoundly impacting patient recovery and quality of life. However, perioperative neurocognitive disorders represent only one facet of a broader spectrum of perioperative neurologic injury (PNI) that also includes overt stroke and prognostically crucial silent brain infarcts. The etiology of this injury spectrum is unequivocally multifactorial. This comprehensive review conceptuali

Resilience of Neural Cellularity to the Influence of Low Educational Level.

BACKGROUND: Education is believed to contribute positively to brain structure and function, as well as to cognitive reserve. One of the brain regions most impacted by education is the medial temporal lobe (MTL), a region that houses the hippocampus, which has an important role in learning processes and in consolidation of memories, and is also known to undergo neurogenesis in adulthood. We aimed to investigate the influence of education on the absolute cell numbers of the MTL (comprised by the hippocampal formation, amygdala, and parahippocampal gyrus) of men without cognitive impairment. MET…

[Androgen deprivation therapy of prostate cancer from a geriatric perspective].

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer is carried out in a palliative approach in symptomatic geriatric patients. Testosterone synthesis is suppressed using a dual therapy principle with luteinising hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) analogues or antagonists of LH-RH, in addition to modern antiandrogens. Additional administration of taxanes is initially possible in cases of high tumor burden and aggressive tumor biology, which is otherwise reserved for castration-resistant prostate cancer. The ADT is a systemic therapy for all testosterone-dependent processes and can lead to hot

Past and future episodic detail retrieval is reduced among clinically normal older adults at higher genetic risk for late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Remembering and imagining personal events that are rich in episodic (i.e., event-specific) detail is compromised in older adults who have mild cognitive impairment, a known risk factor for Alzheimer's disease dementia. Less clear is whether lower episodic detail generation is associated with higher risk for Alzheimer's disease dementia before mild clinical decline is detectable. METHOD: We compared past and future autobiographical thinking in clinically normal older adult carriers of the Alzheimer's disease-associated apolipoprotein E e4 allele (APOE4; n = 39) to demographically an

Prenatal maternal mood entropy is associated with child neurodevelopment.

Emerging evidence indicates that the predictability of signals early in life may influence the developing brain. This study examines links between a novel indicator of maternal mood dysregulation, mood entropy, and child neurodevelopmental outcomes. Associations between prenatal maternal mood entropy and child neurodevelopment were assessed in 2 longitudinal cohorts. Maternal mood was measured several times over pregnancy beginning as early as 15 weeks' gestation. Shannon's mood entropy was applied to distributions of mothers' responses on mood questionnaires. Child cognitive and language deve

Management of delirium in Parkinson's disease.

Delirium is an acute and fluctuating disturbance of attention and awareness. Pre-existing cognitive disturbances or dementia are the most significant risk factors for developing delirium and precipitating factors such as drug treatment, infections, trauma, or surgery may trigger delirium. Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) are at an increased risk for delirium which may be underdiagnosed due to phenomenological overlap between delirium and chronic neuropsychiatric features of PD or side effects of dopaminergic medication. Prognosis of delirium is detrimental in many cases including permane

Implicit contextual learning in spinocerebellar ataxia.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebellum is traditionally associated with motor functions, but recently its functions were broadened to include cognitive and affective functions as well. The impairment of these nonmotor functions was subsumed under the term cerebellar cognitive-affective syndrome (CCAS). Spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) are a family of hereditary degeneration, which is associated with progressive atrophy of the cerebellum. This study aimed to examine the cerebellar contribution to nonmotor implicit learning, which is the ability to acquire visual contextual information via repeated spatial configu

Multidimensional schizotypy and emotion regulation strategies in daily life.

Schizotypy is a multidimensional construct encompassing clinical and subclinical expressions of schizophrenia-spectrum psychopathology that is composed of positive, negative, and disorganized dimensions. These dimensions are differentially associated with disruptions in emotional experience; however, few studies have examined the association of multidimensional schizotypy with emotion regulation (ER). The present study employed experience sampling methodology (ESM) to examine the hypothesis that there are differential associations of positive, negative, and disorganized schizotypy with ER stra

Less systematic decision-making during delay discounting, but not discounting rate, is robustly linked to psychopathology.

Delay discounting, the preference for smaller rewards available sooner over larger rewards available later, exhibits robust individual differences and is thought to contribute to risky behaviors, problematic substance use, and a variety of psychiatric disorders. An individual's behavior on delay discounting tasks is often measured using a hyperbolic discounting model, but this model does not account for inconsistent or nonsystematic choices, which can lead to high rates of exclusions. The practice of excluding participants whose behavior is not perfectly systematic can bias results and is inco

Investigating the transdiagnostic potential of rumination in relation to Cluster B personality disorder symptoms.

This study examined several forms of repetitive negative thinking in relation to measures of Cluster B disorders to identify unique and co-occurring cognitive mechanisms contributing to these symptom presentations. MTurk participants (N = 725; 53% men; 76% White) completed categorical and dimensional trait-based measures of Cluster B disorders alongside six measures of rumination and worry. Oversampling strategies were used during participant recruitment to obtain a sample with clinically relevant personality features. Path analyses examined each form of repetitive negative thinking in relatio

Disparities between Native Americans and Whites in trajectories of functional independence and life satisfaction over the 5 years after traumatic brain injury.

PURPOSE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can lead to impairments in motor and cognitive function and reduced life satisfaction. TBI is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide and disproportionately affects Native Americans, who have the highest rates of TBI among all races in the United States and elevated likelihood for fatality and severe complications. This study investigated whether disparities in functional and life satisfaction outcomes exist longitudinally over the 5 years after complicated mild, moderate, or severe TBI between Native Americans and White individuals; it

Metabolic syndrome and mobility dysfunction in older adults with and without histories of traumatic brain injury: The mediating role of cognition.

OBJECTIVE: Older adults are more susceptible than the general population to developing metabolic syndrome (i.e., three or more cardiovascular risk factors [MetS]), physical limitations, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Recent research has demonstrated that cognition may moderate the negative association between MetS and mobility dysfunction in older adults. This study sought to determine if cognition mediates the relationship between MetS and mobility dysfunction and if this relationship differs in older adults with a history of TBI. METHOD: Participants (N = 20,156) were from the National A

Challenges of modern medicine - geriatric otolaryngology or the advantages of cooperation between an otolaryngologist and a geriatrician.

Advanced age is often burdened with many deficits that are a consequence of the aging process, unfavorable lifestyle and multi-morbidity. They contribute to increased morbidity and disability of the older people. Laryngological problems often concern seniors, particularly progressing with age hearing impairment, dizziness, balance disorders, epistaxis, nasopharyngeal diseases, larynx, sinuses, and salivary glands disorders. They are not only a health threat, such as head and neck cancer, but they contribute to the deterioration of mobility, falls and injuries, depression, cognitive functions i
