[Current perspectives on non-pharmacological approaches to cognitive impairment].

Cognitive impairment (CI) is increasingly recognized as a significant public health issue. Despite extensive research into its causes, mechanisms, and risk factors, along with advancements in pharmacological treatments for associated conditions, preventing or slowing the progression of cognitive decline often cannot be achieved through medication alone. Consequently, non-pharmacological strategies are also employed to support cognitive health in patients with cognitive disorders. This literature review explores the most effective non-drug therapies for cognitive impairment, as well as potentia

A 2-year longitudinal randomized controlled trial examining the transfer of speed of processing training to secondary cognitive domains in middle-aged and older adults with HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder: Results of the think fast study.

OBJECTIVE: As people with HIV (PWH) age, they are at-risk of developing cognitive impairments compared to their seronegative counterparts. Although speed of processing (SOP) training may help improve this cognitive ability, less work has examined transfer to other cognitive domains. This study examined the effect of SOP training has on secondary cognitive domains in PWH aged 40+ years. METHOD: In this 3-group 2-year longitudinal study, 216 PWH with HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) or borderline HAND were randomized to either: (1) 10 h of SOP training (n = 70); (2) 20 h of SOP tra

Protocol for the "Chemobrain in Motion - study" (CIM - study): a randomized placebo-controlled trial of the impact of a high-intensity interval endurance training on cancer related cognitive impairments in women with breast cancer receiving first-line chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Up to 80% of breast cancer patients suffer from Cancer Related Cognitive Impairments (CRCI). Exercise is suggested as a potential supportive care option to reduce cognitive decline in cancer patients. This study will investigate the effects of a high-intensity interval endurance training (HIIT) on CRCI in breast cancer patients. Potentially underlying immunological and neurobiological mechanisms, as well as effects on patients' self-perceived cognitive functioning and common cancer related side-effects, will be explored. METHODS: A single-blinded randomized controlled trial will b

A multicentric, 2 × 2 factorial, randomised, open-label trial to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of structured physical activity training and cognitive behavioural therapy versus usual care in heart failure patients: a protocol for the PACT-HF trial.

Background: Heart failure (HF) is a multi-morbid chronic condition, which adversely affects the quality of life of the affected individual. Engaging the patient and their caregivers in self-care is known to reduce mortality, rehospitalisation and improve quality of life among HF patients. The PACT-HF trial will answer whether clinical benefits in terms of mortality and hospitalisation outcomes can be demonstrated by using a pragmatic design to explore the specific effects of physical activity, and cognitive behavioural therapy in HF patients in India. Methods: We will conduct a 2 × 2 factorial

Cognitive remediation in people with bipolar disorder and cognitive dysfunction: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is a frequent feature of bipolar disorder (BD), often persisting during euthymic phases and affecting multiple cognitive domains. These deficits impair functional recovery and quality of life. Pharmacological treatments have shown limited efficacy in ameliorating cognitive dysfunction in BD. Cognitive remediation (CR) has emerged as a promising nonpharmacological alternative. However, reviews of its efficacy in BD have reported inconsistent findings. One major limitation highlighted in past reviews is the heterogeneity of study samples, due to the inclusion of

Rethinking the Prevention of Cognitive Decline in Healthy Older Adults: The Motor-Cognitive Active Gamified Immersive Cultural (MAGIC) Exergames.

Though exergames attract considerable research interest as tools for preserving cognitive function in older adults, a decade of meta-analytic evidence reveals a persistent gap between theoretical promise and empirical demonstration: exergames rarely outperform conventional motor-cognitive training and do not generate the sustained engagement that preventive benefit requires. These results reflect limitations that are structural: the field focused predominantly on clinical populations rather than primary prevention; training concepts borrowed from rehabilitation protocols rather than grounded i…

Effectiveness of cognitive interventions in healthy aging: A systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis.

The global increase of the aging population poses major public health challenges, particularly due to the rising prevalence of age-related diseases. Among these, dementia stands out as a condition with the most significant health, social, and economic impact. Primary prevention in healthy aging, thus far, represents the most effective strategy to address this issue, and cognitive interventions emerge as promising tools to enhance and preserve cognitive functions over time. This study aimed to provide a systematic review and meta-analysis of cognitive interventions in healthy older adults, asse
