Coinfections in intensive care units. Has anything changed with Covid-19 pandemia?

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Since December 2019, the Coronavirus disease 2019, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (Sars-CoV-2), has spread from China, becoming a pandemic. Bacterial and fungal co-infections may lead to increase in COVID-19 severity with a decrease in patients survive. The aim of this work was to evaluate bacterial and fungal co-infections in COVID-19 patients admitted to ICU in comparison with patients recovered in ICU in pre-COVID-19 era in order to understand whether the pandemic had changed the incidence of overinfections in patients admitted to ICU. In fact,

Clinical and laboratory characteristics of dengue and COVID-19 coinfected patients in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Dengue-COVID-19 coinfection is one of the greatest emerging challenges in dengue-endemic areas during the continuing pandemic. With coinciding clinical and laboratory pictures, early diagnosis becomes burdensome, with management discrepancy. METHODS: A descriptive study was performed on dengue-COVID-19 coinfected patients during July-August 2021 for an overview of disease progression, severity and outcome. A total of 11 patients who were positive for dengue NS1 and/or antidengue IgM were included in this study. RESULTS: In total, 45.5% patients developed severe COVID-19 disease, …

The Prevalence of Genital Mycoplasmas and Coinfection with Trichomonas vaginalis in Female Patients in Vienna, Austria.

Trichomonas vaginalis causes trichomoniasis, the most recurrent sexually transmitted infection (STI) worldwide. Genital mycoplasmas, not considered STI agents, are frequently isolated from the female genital tract. A symbiosis between Mycoplasma species and T. vaginalis has been described. The aim of this study was to conduct molecular-based analyses of vaginal specimens, thus assessing the prevalence of non-STI Mycoplasma infections. In total, 582 samples from female patients and an additional 20 T. vaginalis isolates were analyzed by PCR using Mycoplasma specific 16S rRNA primers, and the ob

Difficulty in Diagnosing and Treating a Prostate Abscess With Bacterial and Fungal Coinfection in an Immunocompromised Patient.

Prostate abscesses often occur in immunocompromised individuals. Contrast-enhanced imaging tests can aid diagnosis; however, they can be difficult to perform in older patients with renal insufficiency. Various organisms can cause prostate abscesses, and poor antibiotic penetration into the prostate can hinder treatment. Here, we report a case of prostate abscess manifesting as fever of unknown origin. The patient, a 78-year-old man with a history of heart failure, renal failure, and liver cirrhosis, presented with dyspnea and fever. He was initially diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia. However

Molecular detection of respiratory coinfections in pig herds with enzootic pneumonia: a survey in Brazil.

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is the primary etiologic agent of swine enzootic pneumonia (EP), in which the immune response is reduced, making pigs susceptible to secondary infections. We surveyed commercial pig herds in Brazil for viral and bacterial respiratory coinfections that could complicate EP. Over a 2-y period (2015-2016), we found that 854 of 2,206 pigs (38.7%) were positive for M. hyopneumoniae in herds from various production systems in 3 Brazilian regions (Central-West, Southeast, South). We collected samples of 321 lungs positive for M. hyopneumoniae from 169 farms to also screen for …

COVID-19 and Coinfections: A Serious Health Threat Requires Combination of Diagnosis and Therapy.

Since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, a mammoth research activity targeting the etiological features of COVID-19 has commenced. Many aspects of the disease have been studied, and various others are under consideration. The secondary microbial coinfections with COVID-19 have generated some serious concerns across the globe. This review mainly focuses on the notable secondary coinfections. The coinfection of influenza, tuberculosis, and typhoid may mimic the original COVID-19 symptoms. Physicians and clinicians must focus on the secondary coinfections which may aggravate the disease…

Fungal and bacterial coinfections increase mortality of severely ill COVID-19 patients.

BACKGROUND: SARS-CoV-2 predisposes patients to secondary infections; however, a better understanding of the impact of coinfections on the outcome of hospitalized COVID-19 patients is still necessary. AIM: To analyse death risk due to coinfections in COVID-19 patients. METHODS: The odds of death of 212 severely ill COVID-19 patients were evaluated, with detailed focus on the risks for each pathogen, site of infection, comorbidities and length of hospitalization. FINDINGS: The mortality rate was 50.47%. Fungal and/or bacterial isolation occurred in 89 patients, of whom 83.14% died. Coinfected…

Estimating an individual-level deprivation index for HIV/HCV coinfected persons in Canada.

BACKGROUND: HIV-HCV coinfected individuals are often more deprived than the general population. However, deprivation is difficult to measure, often relying on aggregate data which does not capture individual heterogeneity. We developed an individual-level deprivation index for HIV-HCV co-infected persons that encapsulated social, material, and lifestyle factors. METHODS: We estimated an individual-level deprivation index with data from the Canadian Coinfection Cohort, a national prospective cohort study. We used a predetermined process to select 9 out of 19 dichotomous variables at baseline v…

Dengue virus dominates lipid metabolism modulations in Wolbachia-coinfected Aedes aegypti.

Competition between viruses and Wolbachia for host lipids is a proposed mechanism of Wolbachia-mediated virus blocking in insects. Yet, the metabolomic interaction between virus and symbiont within the mosquito has not been clearly defined. We compare the lipid profiles of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes bearing mono- or dual-infections of the Wolbachia wMel strain and dengue virus serotype 3 (DENV3). We found metabolic signatures of infection-induced intracellular events but little evidence to support direct competition between Wolbachia and virus for host lipids. Lipid profiles of dual-infected mos

Sexually transmitted coinfections in patients with anogenital warts - a retrospective analysis of 196 patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Anogenital warts (AGWs) are most commonly caused by low-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) types, and although they are the most frequent viral sexually transmitted infections (STIs), little is known about STI coinfections in affected patients. We therefore sought to assess STI coinfection rates in patients with AGW, specify STI coinfections and calculate the number needed to screen (NNS) for each STI. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study analyzing data sets from AGW patients treated in our clinic between 2008-2016. RESULTS: 142/196 (72 %) patients had been …
