Climate changes, environment and infection: facts, scenarios and growing awareness from the public health community within Europe.

Climate change is a current global concern and, despite continuing controversy about the extent and importance of causes and of its effects, it seems likely that it will affect the incidence and prevalence of both residual and imported infections in Europe. Climate affects mainly the range of infectious diseases, whereas weather affects the timing and intensity of outbreaks. Climate change scenarios include a change distribution of infectious diseases with warming and changes in outbreaks associated with weather extremes. The largest health impact from climate change for Europe doesn't come fr

Communicable-disease surveillance in New Jersey.

The DHSS and federal agencies have expanded their surveillance efforts to improve existing methods of reporting notifiable communicable diseases and to include additional data sources that might provide a more comprehensive view of disease activity in New Jersey. Currently, the DHSS is evaluating these efforts and recognizes several issues that need to be addressed, including: assessment of the timeliness, completeness, and accuracy of surveillance data; validation of surveillance data through comparison with hospital uniform billing data; characterization of the sensitivity of alerts through

The impact of socio-economic and demographic factors on non-communicable diseases in Morocco.

INTRODUCTION: By 2030, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are expected to overtake all other causes of death in Africa. The prevalence of NCDs and related risk factors are influenced by gender and socioeconomic disparities. AIM: Thus, this study aimed to determine the impact of socio-economic and demographic factors on non-communicable diseases in Morocco. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were analysed from 4766 adults who participated in the 2017 STEPS survey in Morocco. Data collection included assessment of behavioural and biochemical risk factors. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Chi-square and the Kr

Overcoming Vaccine Inequities and Research Gaps in Africa: Challenges and Opportunities Identified During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Before the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the African region already faced a substantial communicable disease burden and a rising prevalence of noncommunicable and chronic conditions. The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored critical vulnerabilities within the health systems in African countries and highlighted the urgent need for self-sufficiency to increase resilience in vaccine manufacturing and clinical trial capacity. In response, substantial efforts are underway to develop vaccine and pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities across the continent. Ongoing initiat

Tuberculosis: protecting healthcare workers.

The global incidence of tuberculosis (TB) is rising. Many more healthcare workers are coming into contact with the disease now that it has reached its highest infection rate for 17 years (Sadler 2001). Modern screening methods allow detection of infection, and a strict antibiotic regimen can prevent and cure disease. A clinical placement at a chest clinic in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, provided a useful insight into methods used for the screening and control of TB, and allowed a comparison and analysis of how infection is monitored and controlled among healthcare workers. Although approa

Survey of the prescribing of chemoprophylaxis to index cases of invasive meningococcal disease.

Chemoprophylaxis is given to contacts of cases of invasive meningococcal disease to reduce the risk of secondary cases by eradicating carriage. In the United Kingdom index cases are also recommended to receive chemoprophylaxis. This is usually undertaken by the clinical team managing the case. One hundred and fifty cases of probable meningococcal infection notified to the consultants in communicable disease control in a local health authority were reviewed to identify the proportion receiving chemoprophylaxis and to examine the final clinical outcome, in terms of diagnosis, of each case. Twent…

Emerging or re-emerging bacterial zoonotic diseases: bartonellosis, leptospirosis, Lyme borreliosis, plague.

There are a whole series of emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases present in the Northern Hemisphere and the author describes four of them, namely, bartonellosis, leptospirosis, Lyme borreliosis and plague. Reasons for the emergence or re-emergence of such diseases are not clear, but factors such as human demographics, economic development and land use, international travel and commerce, and microbial adaptation, are thought to be involved. Control of emerging and re-emerging diseases has become a major challenge for the international community and it is important to disseminate informati

Significant variations of dangerous exposures during COVID-19 pandemic in Italy: a possible association with the containment measures implemented to reduce the virus transmission.

BACKGROUND: In response to the COVID-19 health emergency, mass media widely spread guidelines to stop the virus transmission, leading to an excessive and unaware use of detergents and disinfectants. In Italy and in other countries this tendency caused a significant increase of exposures to these products in 2020. Evaluating data collected by the Italian Pavia Poison Centre (PPC), this study intends to examine the relationship between the COVID-19 lockdown and the variations of exposures to specific product categories possibly associated to the containment measures implemented. Simultaneously,

[Globalization and infectious diseases].

We live in an ever more connected global village linked through international travel, politics, economics, culture and human-human and human-animal interactions. In public health a similar combination of factors can be seen. Today the concept of globalization including global exposure to infectious diseases is becoming more apparent. In 2003 outbreaks included monkeypox , SARS and avian influenza. This article examines some basic problems to infectious diseases emergence and control.

Large-scale spatial-transmission models of infectious disease.

During transmission of seasonal endemic diseases such as measles and influenza, spatial waves of infection have been observed between large distant populations. Also, during the initial stages of an outbreak of a new or reemerging pathogen, disease incidence tends to occur in spatial clusters, which makes containment possible if you can predict the subsequent spread of disease. Spatial models are being used with increasing frequency to help characterize these large-scale patterns and to evaluate the impact of interventions. Here, I review several recent studies on four diseases that show the b

Spread of awareness of COVID-19 between December 2019 and March 2020 in France.

During the early phase of outbreaks, awareness of the presence of the disease plays an important role in transmission dynamics. To investigate the processes of how people become aware of a disease, we conducted two complementary investigations. First, we surveyed 868 academic researchers in France, on the time and circumstances when they became aware of COVID-19 as an important event. We found that 25% did so before February 18th (first death in France), 50% did so before March 10th (first presidential allocution) and 75% did so before March 16th (announcement of the lockdown). Awareness came

Patient level barriers to accessing TB care services during the COVID-19 pandemic in Uganda, a mixed methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Lockdown measure has been utilized widely to mitigate COVID-19 pandemic transmission and recently during the 2022 Sudan Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in Uganda. These have setback effects on the continuity of essential health services such as tuberculosis (TB) care, reversing progress made in the fight against tuberculosis (TB) over the past decade. We set out to understand patient-reported barriers to accessing TB care services during the COVID-19 pandemic in Uganda. METHODS: Mixed methods study involving review of medical records of TB patients who received TB care from January

Context-Dependent Responses to the Spread of COVID-19 Among National and International Students During the First Lockdown: An Online Survey.

BACKGROUND: Restrictions to minimize social contact was necessary to prevent the spread of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus but may have impacted individuals' mental well-being. Emotional responses are modulated by contextual information. Living abroad during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may have boosted the feeling of isolation as the context is unfamiliar. OBJECTIVES: This study compared the psychological impact of social distancing in national students (living in a familiar context) versus international students (living in an unfami

Lockdowns and cycling injuries: temporal analysis of rates in Quebec during the first year of the pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Cycling increased in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the impact on cycling injuries is not known. We examined the effect of lockdowns on cycling injury hospitalizations. METHODS: We identified hospitalizations for cycling injuries in Quebec, Canada, between April 2006 and March 2021. We used rate ratios (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) to compare hospitalization rates by type of cycling injury and anatomical site during two waves of the pandemic. We performed interrupted time series regression to assess the effect of lockdowns on monthly cycling injury hospita
