In remote areas and in developing countries, where adequate health-care structures are few and sparse, Occupational Medicine contributes to guaranteeing workers' health. Companies like Saipem, involved in activities that are carried out in remote, inhospitable areas must ensure the safety and guarantee the health conditions of workers in relation to the risk factors connected with the job as well as with the environment in which it is performed. In such situations, Occupational Medicine addresses both the health aspects of the workplace and of the community, and is the pivot around which revol

BACKGROUND: Understanding stakeholders' (parents', communities' and health workers') perspectives of communication about childhood vaccination, including their preferences for its format, delivery and content, is an important step towards designing better communication strategies and ensuring more informed parents. Our objectives were to explore stakeholders' views, experiences and preferences for childhood vaccination communication in Cameroon.
METHODS: In 2014, in the Central and North West Regions of Cameron, we gathered qualitative data for our case study using the following methods: semi

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, healthcare workers were devastated by the insufficient preparedness to respond to their patients' and personal health needs. A gap exists in resources to prevent or reduce acute and long-term healthcare worker mental illnesses resulting from COVID-19 frontline response.
METHODS: We performed an exploratory, mixed methods, longitudinal study of healthcare workers at a regional rural-urban hospital system in the Midwest United States during the COVID-19 response (4 timepoints, 2020). Using the Total Worker Health® (TWH) participator

BACKGROUND: Malaria in pregnancy is a major cause of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Intermittent preventive treatment with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP) is one of the control strategies promoted by WHO. In response to mounting resistance to SP, intermittent screening and treatment (ISTp) has been proposed as an alternative. The objective of this study was to explore the acceptability of ISTp for health workers and pregnant women.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews of ten health workers and five focus group discussions of 38 women enrolled in an ongoing trial comparing IPTp-SP and

BACKGROUND: Policies promote patient-centred tuberculosis (TB) care in Kenya, a high-burden TB country, but implementation remains limited. This study sought to understand the experiences of TB healthcare workers in implementing patient-centred TB services in primary health facilities in Nairobi and explore how the challenges they face can be addressed.
METHODS: Using collaborative research design, we recruited healthcare workers (n=29) from primary health facilities across three densely populated subcounties in Nairobi and TB stakeholders (n=24) including policymakers and managers. From Marc

INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, public health workers were at an increased risk for violence and harassment due to their public health work and experienced adverse mental health conditions. This article quantifies the prevalence of job-related threats, harassment, and discrimination against public health workers and measures the association of these incidents with mental health symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: A nonprobability convenience sample of state, local, and tribal public health workers completed a self-administered, online survey in April 2021. The survey l

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND: The arsenal of interventions to reduce the disproportionate rates of HIV and sexually transmitted disease (STD) infection among Latinos in the United States lags behind what is available for other populations. The purpose of this project was to develop an intervention that builds on existing community strengths to promote sexual health among immigrant Latinas.
METHODS: Our community-based participatory research (CBPR) partnership engaged in a multistep intervention development process. The steps were to (1) increase Latina participation in the existing partnership

OBJECTIVE: To document COVID-19 sero-prevalence, prior testing, symptom experiences, and risk factors in a sample of community health center (CHC) workers.
METHODS: Descriptive statistics and log-binomial regression were used to analyze an electronic employee survey linked with COVID-19 antibody results. The sample included 378 employees who completed the survey; 325 had complete lab data.
RESULTS: The sero-positivity rate was 15.4%. One third of sero-positive participants had no previous COVID-19 symptoms or were unsure. Working on-site only and/or with direct patient contact was not associ

BACKGROUND: Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand's seafood processing industry develop work-related musculoskeletal disorders from tasks such as repetitive shrimp peeling and standing for extended periods. These workers remain largely unreached by standard health interventions due to language barriers and cultural isolation. Developing effective study for this vulnerable population requires meaningful involvement of workers in the study design process, recognizing their experiential expertise while acknowledging the distinct roles of researchers and community members. This paper documents how i

BACKGROUND: The global shortage of trained mental health workers disproportionately impacts mental health care access in low- and middle-income countries. In Kenya, effective strategies are needed to scale-up the workforce to meet the demand for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder treatment. Task-shifting - delegating specific tasks to non-specialist workers - is one workforce expansion approach. However, non-specialist workers remain underutilized in Kenya due to a paucity of research on how to scale-up and sustain such service models.

INTRODUCTION: An increase in home delivery among expectant mothers may likely lead to high maternal and newborn morbidities and mortalities. Despite the policy on free maternal healthcare in Ghana under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) since 2007, more than 25% of deliveries still occur outside health facilities in northern Ghana. Use of safe and effective delivery services including place of delivery is an important component of the Safe Motherhood concept. Hence, assessing predictors of institutional delivery could contribute to improving birth outcomes in the Northern Region.

ABSTRACTIn this paper, we examine a prominent interpretation of HIV risk in a rural South African setting experiencing a severe HIV epidemic well into older ages: the discourse of caregiving HIV transmission. By caregiving transmission, we refer to HIV infection resulting from caring for family members who are living with HIV and may be sick with AIDS-related illnesses. We draw on individual life history and community focus group interviews with men and women aged 40-80+, as well as interviews with health workers providing HIV counselling and testing services at local health facilities in thei

INTRODUCTION: The local healthcare workforce is critical to rural communities, which face more complex health conditions than urban counterparts. Workforce shortages exacerbate strain on rural healthcare systems and create service access barriers. To date, retention and recruitment strategies have struggled to resolve staffing issues. This study investigated an overlooked local resource: hospital and primary healthcare workers previously employed or working at less than full-time capacity in rural Queensland, Australia. We explored barriers and enablers to increasing their working hours or ret

BACKGROUND: Gut microbes are important to the health and fitness of many animals. Many factors have been shown to affect gut microbial communities including diet, lifestyle, and age. Most animals have very complex physiologies, lifestyles, and microbiomes, making it virtually impossible to disentangle what factors have the largest impact on microbiota composition. Honeybees are an excellent model to study host-microbe interactions due to their relatively simple gut microbiota, experimental tractability, and eusociality. Worker honey bees have distinct gut microbiota from their queen mothers de

Elderly persons with mental retardation constitute a relatively small and often overlooked subgroup of our aged population. As their numbers continue to grow, it is likely that social workers in health care and social service agencies serving either the mentally retarded or the aged will increasingly encounter such older persons as clients. This paper presents a case study that illustrates some of the problems and issues that social workers in a variety of community-based and institutional-based agencies are likely to face in helping to provide for the health and residential care needs of memb
