Predictors of anal and cervical cancer screening uptake among adults with and without HIV: survey of a community-based health clinic network.

PURPOSE: People with HIV (PWH) in the United States (U.S.) are disproportionately impacted by human papillomavirus-related cancers. We aimed to identify sociodemographic, health, and social predictors of anal and cervical cancer screening uptake among adults with and without HIV. METHODS: We implemented a cross-sectional survey between April and June 2024 among adult patients receiving care at a community-based clinic network (predominantly based in Florida, U.S.) that delivers HIV prevention and treatment services. Outcomes included any receipt of anal cancer screening and guideline-adherent

Evidence supportive of a bacterial component in the etiology for Alzheimer's disease and for a temporal-spatial development of a pathogenic microbiome in the brain.

BACKGROUND: Over the last few decades, a growing body of evidence has suggested a role for various infectious agents in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. Despite diverse pathogens (virus, bacteria, fungi) being detected in AD subjects' brains, research has focused on individual pathogens and only a few studies investigated the hypothesis of a bacterial brain microbiome. We profiled the bacterial communities present in non-demented controls and AD subjects' brains. RESULTS: We obtained postmortem samples from the brains of 32 individual subjects, comprising 16 AD and 16 control age-matche

A community-driven resource for genomic epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance prediction of Neisseria gonorrhoeae at Pathogenwatch.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) Neisseria gonorrhoeae is an urgent threat to public health, as strains resistant to at least one of the two last-line antibiotics used in empiric therapy of gonorrhoea, ceftriaxone and azithromycin, have spread internationally. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) data can be used to identify new AMR clones and transmission networks and inform the development of point-of-care tests for antimicrobial susceptibility, novel antimicrobials and vaccines. Community-driven tools that provide an easy access to and analysis of genomic and epidemiological data is the w

A natural language processing and deep learning approach to identify child abuse from pediatric electronic medical records.

Child physical abuse is a leading cause of traumatic injury and death in children. In 2017, child abuse was responsible for 1688 fatalities in the United States, of 3.5 million children referred to Child Protection Services and 674,000 substantiated victims. While large referral hospitals maintain teams trained in Child Abuse Pediatrics, smaller community hospitals often do not have such dedicated resources to evaluate patients for potential abuse. Moreover, identification of abuse has a low margin of error, as false positive identifications lead to unwarranted separations, while false negativ

A multimodal analysis suggests partial IRF8/TLR7-associated myeloid transcriptional convergence between diabetic kidney disease and Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) affect different organs but share epidemiological associations and innate immune abnormalities. The extent and cellular basis of reproducible cross-disease transcriptomic convergence remain uncertain. METHODS: Two DKD glomerular and three PD substantia nigra microarray cohorts were analyzed independently and combined using disease-specific and cross-disease meta-analysis. Independent DKD single-cell RNA-sequencing, PD single-nucleus RNA-sequencing, and spatial transcriptomic datasets were used for cell-type localization an

Social reward and nonsocial reward processing across the adult lifespan: An interim multi-echo fMRI and diffusion dataset.

Social relationships change across the lifespan as social networks narrow and motivational priorities shift. These changes may affect, or reflect, differences in how older adults make decisions related to processing social and non-social rewards. While we have shown initial evidence that older adults have a blunted response to some features of social reward, further work in larger samples is needed to replicate our results and probe the extent to which age-related differences translate to real world consequences, such as financial exploitation. To address this gap, we are conducting a 5-year s

HIV leadership programming attendance is associated with PrEP and PEP awareness among young, gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in Vancouver, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Young gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YGBM) may have reduced engagement and knowledge of HIV care and biomedical HIV prevention strategies, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and Treatment as Prevention (TasP), compared with adult GBM. We sought to understand differences in HIV prevention awareness, health care access, and service utilization between youth (16-29 years) and adult (≥30 year) GBM, as well as factors associated with attendance in HIV leadership programming among YGBM living in the publicly funded PrEP setting

Anomaly Detection and Data Repair for Smart Meter Data in Smart Cities: A Comprehensive Review and Future Perspectives.

Smart meters are the core terminals for distribution network data acquisition in smart cities, yet their collected data commonly suffer from quality issues caused by harsh operating environments, communication failures, hardware degradation, and human factors. This paper presents a systematic review of anomaly detection and data repair methods for smart meter data based on a critical analysis of many publications. First, we characterize five typical anomalies-sudden jumps, reading stagnation, reverse readings, pulse spikes, and gradual drifts-from physical root causes to data manifestations an

A Composite interaction Score: Prioritizing cell-cell interactions from single-cell RNA-seq with application to pre-menopausal epithelial barriers.

INTRODUCTION: Cell-cell interactions (CCIs) govern tissue homeostasis, immune regulation, and barrier defense. To study these processes, multiple computational tools have been developed to infer CCIs from single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) data, but each tool relies on distinct scoring metrics, making their results difficult to reconcile. Consequently, no standard framework exists for prioritizing predicted CCIs. Simple consensus strategies, such as averaging ranks, treat agreement across the entire spectrum equally and often fail to highlight the most biologically meaningful CCIs. OBJECT

Examination of lipid distributions in hydrogel-expanded mouse brain tissue using imaging mass spectrometry.

BACKGROUND: Imaging is essential in biological research, and imaging mass spectrometry uniquely provides a label-free approach with high molecular specificity. However, imaging mass spectrometry is limited in spatial resolution, which in turn limits the biological structures that can be studied. Custom lens setups and altered optical paths can shrink the diameter of the incident laser beam probe in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) imaging mass spectrometry to achieve high spatial resolutions (<5 μm). However, these research-grade instruments are complex and expensive, making

GerOSS (German Obstetric Surveillance System). A Project to Improve the Treatment of Obstetric Rare Diseases and Complications Using a Web Based Documentation and Information Platform.

BACKGROUND: Severe and very rare obstetric complications (e.g. eclampsia, postpartum haemorrhage or uterine rupture), typically culminate in a chaotic, uncontrollable sequence of events. Outcome for mother and child depends on whether doctors and midwives are able to quickly take correct decisions and initiate optimal treatment. OBJECTIVES: GerOSS (German Obstetric Surveillance System) aims at generating deeper insight into relevant risk factors to improve diagnosis and treatment of severe complications during pregnancy and delivery. As such it is primarily conceived as a system for quality i

[Health technology assessment report: Computer-assisted Pap test for cervical cancer screening].

UNLABELLED: HEALTH PROBLEM: Cervical cancer is a disease which is highly preventable by means of Pap test screening for the precancerous lesions, which can be easily treated. Furthermore, in the near future, control of the disease will be enhanced by the vaccination which prevents the infection of those human papillomavirus types that cause the vast majority of cervical cancers. The effectiveness of screening in drastically reducing cervical cancer incidence has been clearly demonstrated. The epidemiology of cervical cancer in industrialised countries is now determined mostly by the Pap test c

Pediatric precision sleep network: a study protocol for identifying sleep signatures of mental health risk in peri-adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Peri-adolescence (ages 10-13) is a sensitive-and clinically critical-developmental window for the emergence of psychiatric symptoms, yet scalable strategies for early risk detection in pediatric primary care (PPC) remain limited. Sleep disturbances are among the most prevalent, predictive, and modifiable indicators of youth mental health, but current pediatric assessments rely heavily on subjective, single-source reports that fail to capture the multidimensional nature of sleep health. The Pediatric Precision Sleep Network (PPSN) is a longitudinal, multi-site study designed to inte

Construction of a diagnostic model for nasopharyngeal carcinoma using a consensus machine learning approach and study of immune infiltration characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma requires reliable diagnostic biomarkers due to its occult location and poor outcomes. METHODS: This study analyzed scRNA-seq data from NPC and control tissues to resolve the tumor microenvironment. CellChat was utilized to infer cell-cell communication. We integrated marker genes from cell clusters, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from bulk RNA-seq, and key module genes identified by WGCNA to screen candidate genes. Feature selection was then performed using four machine learning algorithms (LASSO, SVM-RFE, Boruta, and XGBoost) to build a robust diag
