Effect of health education and condom promotion on behavioral change among low socioeconomic prostitutes in Mae Sot, Tak, Thailand.

A study was conducted to determine the effect of preventive educational efforts among 621 female prostitutes in Mae Sot, Tak Province, in 1989. The intensive health education program at a personal level and free condom distribution to the prostitutes began in March and June 1989, respectively. The proportion of prostitutes' sexual partners using condoms increased from 13.5% in January 1989 to 50.4% by December 1989. The reported increase in condom use was supported by the decline in the incidence rate of gonorrhea among the prostitutes during the same period. Anal intercourse was not commonly …

Contextualizing condoms: a cross-sectional study mapping intersections of locations of sexual contact, partner type, and substance use as contexts for sexual risk behavior among MSM in Peru.

BACKGROUND: Condomless anal intercourse (CAI) appears to be increasing among men who have sex with men (MSM) globally, and is reported to be as high as 70% in recent studies in Peru. To improve understanding of the evolving context of CAI among MSM in Peru, we studied associations between partner type, substance use, and condomless anal intercourse (CAI) in locations where MSM commonly report having sexual encounters. METHODS: In a 2017 cross-sectional study of rectal STI screening and HIV prevention, a convenience sample of MSM recruited from community venues in Lima completed a survey of de

Predictors of HIV-preventive sexual behavior in a high-risk adolescent population: the influence of perceived peer norms and sexual communication on incarcerated adolescents' consistent use of condoms.

Data were collected from 112 sexually active adolescents incarcerated in a juvenile detention facility to identify predictors of consistent use of condoms during sexual intercourse. Adolescents completed an anonymous epidemiologic survey instrument developed by the Centers for Disease Control. The self-report survey assessed demographic, psychosocial, and behavioral factors. Three factors were identified as associated with consistent condom use. These significant bivariate factors were entered into a multivariate logistic regression model to identify the independent contribution of each factor…

Consistent and Correct Use of Condoms With Lubricants and Associated Factors Among Men Who Have Sex With Men from the Ghana Men's Study II: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) experience a disproportionate burden of HIV infection globally, including in Ghana. The use of condoms with lubricants correctly and consistently plays a vital role in reducing the number of new HIV infections among MSM. However, there are concerns about the consistent and correct use of condoms and lubricants among MSM in Ghana. In this regard, there is a need to understand context-specific factors associated with consistent and correct condom use with lubricants. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the current scope of consistent and correct u…

Barriers and facilitators to condom use among People Who Inject Drugs in Georgia: A qualitative study guided by the COM-B model.

People who inject drugs (PWID) are at a heightened risk of contracting and transmitting HIV due to shared needles and unsafe sexual practices. Evidence on what shapes condom use among PWID in Georgia is limited. We conducted qualitative study among PWID recruited from two harm-reduction organizations in Tbilisi and Samegrelo between June-August 2025. Interviews were guided by the COM-B framework and analyzed thematically. Reduced sexual pleasure emerged as a dominant capability-related barrier to condom use. Knowledge of risks, benefits, and where to obtain condoms supported condom use, althou…

Trends in condom use and its socioeconomic inequalities among men in Sierra Leone for HIV prevention, 2008-2019: A longitudinal analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Health equity is a central objective of global health, requiring the removal of barriers to ensure equitable access and use of services for all. Monitoring inequalities in health service use is critical to evaluate progress toward this goal. This study analyses longitudinal trends in condom use, a key HIV prevention service and the associated socioeconomic inequalities among men in Sierra Leone to assess whether access and use are becoming more equitable. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data from the 2008, 2013, and 2019 Sierra Leone Demographic and Health Surveys.

Convergent Effects of Alcohol and Confluence Model Constructs on Sexual Aggression, Sexual Misperception, and Coercive Condom Use Resistance: A Scoping Review.

Several robust predictors of men's sexual aggression perpetration include components of the confluence model, specifically alcohol consumption and constellations of attitudes referred to as hostile masculinity and impersonal sex. These constructs have also been found to predict sexual misperception, a frequent intermediary for sexual aggression, and coercive condom use resistance. Whether alcohol and hostile masculinity and impersonal sex operate independently or in concert to increase the likelihood of male sexual aggression perpetration and these related behaviors is unclear, and prior studi

Development of a HIV Prevention Program to Promote Condom Use Among Iranian Female Sex Workers: Application of An Intervention Mapping Approach.

We used an Intervention Mapping Approach (IMA) to derive multi-level HIV prevention strategies aiming to develop an HIV prevention intervention program among female sex workers (FSWs). We also aimed at pilot testing the effects of the IMA-based "HIV Prevention and Awareness Program (HIV-PAP)" on safe sex behaviors and its determinants among FSWs in Tabriz, Iran. To develop HIV-PAP, we conducted the six-step process of IMA. At Step 1, in a cross-sectional study, 140 FSWs were face-to-face interviewed. At Step 2, the program matrix was provided based on the importance and variability for identif

Condom Use at Last Sex and Sexual Negotiation Among Young African American Women in North Carolina: Context or Personal Agency.

African American women are 10.8 times more likely to be diagnosed with HIV compared with White women. This descriptive study fills a gap by examining associations among social and contextual factors and sexual communication, condom use, and safer sex negotiation among African American women. Study participants between 18 and 25 years of age and who reported recent substance use were recruited from three North Carolina counties. A risk behavior survey was administered via audio computer-assisted self-interview, and logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess associations between socia

Reducing New Chlamydia Infection Among Young Men by Promoting Correct and Consistent Condom Use: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The health, social, and economic costs of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) represent a major public health concern. Young people are considered one of the groups most at risk for acquiring and transmitting STIs. Correct and consistent condom use has been shown to be the most effective method for reducing STIs; however, condoms are often not used properly. Evidence shows that brief behavior change interventions that focus on skills, communication, and motivation to acquire safe sex practices should be adopted into routine care to reduce STIs. Funding for sexual health services…

Brief Report: Longitudinal Associations Between Place of Sex Work and Client Condom Coercion Among Sex Workers in Baltimore, Maryland.

INTRODUCTION: The sex work environment influences sex workers' control over enforcing condom use. Sex work in outdoor and public spaces, compared with indoor spaces, may inhibit condom negotiation. We examined longitudinal associations between public place of sex work and condom coercion among female sex workers. METHODS: This cohort study involved 5 data collection points over 1 year among female sex workers (N = 246) in Baltimore, Maryland, recruited by targeted sampling. We conducted bivariate analyses to examine associations between currently conducting any sex work in a public place (PPS

The effects of self-efficacy in bifurcating the relationship of perceived benefit and cost with condom use among adolescents: A cusp catastrophe modeling analysis.

This study tested the complex relationship among the perceived benefit from and cost of condom use, self-efficacy and condom use among adolescents as a nonlinear dynamic process. Participants were 12th graders in public Bahamian high schools who reported having had sex and frequency of condom use. Results revealed that the perceived benefit and perceived cost as asymmetry variables were significantly associated with condom use (p < 0.001) after controlling for covariates. The association was bifurcated by the variable self-efficacy (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the cusp model was better than linea

When are declines in condom use while using PrEP a concern? Modelling insights from a Hillbrow, South Africa case study.

INTRODUCTION: Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a promising new prevention approach for those most at risk of HIV infection. However, there are concerns that behavioural disinhibition, specifically reductions in condom use, might limit PrEP's protective effect. This study uses the case of female sex workers (FSWs) in Johannesburg, South Africa, to assess whether decreased levels of condom use following the introduction of PrEP may limit HIV risk reduction. METHOD: We developed a static model of HIV risk and compared HIV-risk estimates before and after the introduction of PrEP to determi

Estimating the Prevalence and Predictors of Incorrect Condom Use Among Sexually Active Adults in Kenya: Results From a Nationally Representative Survey.

BACKGROUND: Condom use continues to be an important primary prevention tool to reduce the acquisition and transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. However, incorrect use of condoms can reduce their effectiveness. METHODS: Using data from a 2012 nationally representative cross-sectional household survey conducted in Kenya, we analyzed a subpopulation of sexually active adults and estimated the percent that used condoms incorrectly during sex, and the type of condom errors. We used multivariable logistic regression to determine variables to be independently associated with…
