Why reinvent the wheel? Lessons in schistosomiasis control from the past.

Schistosomiasis has been of concern to local health authorities for most of the last century, and in spite of a lack of effective chemotherapy, the disease was dealt with quite effectively in many endemic countries by snail control and environmental management [1]. Much of this work was reported in journals prior to the electronic era but, sadly, seems to have been subsequently ignored. For many years, there followed a global hiatus on schistosomiasis control, and much of the local expertise was lost, but many things have changed more recently, mainly with the advent of generic and affordable

Practical management of behavioral problems in mucopolysaccharidoses disorders.

The mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) disorders are caused by deficiencies of specific lysosomal enzymes, resulting in progressive glycosaminoglycan (GAG) accumulation in cells and tissues throughout the body. Excessive GAG storage can lead to a variety of somatic manifestations as well as primary and secondary neurological symptoms. Behavioral problems (like hyperactivity, attention difficulties, and severe frustration) and sleeping problems are typical primary neurological symptoms of MPS caused by GAG accumulation in neurons, and are frequently observed in patients with MPS I, II, III, and VII. The transition from pediatric to adult care for youth with epilepsy: Basic biological, sociological, and psychological issues.

Transition from pediatric to adult health care for adolescents with epilepsy is challenging for the patient, family, and health care workers. This paper is the first of three that summarize the main findings from the 2nd Symposium on Transition in Epilepsies, held in Paris from June 14-25, 2016. In this paper we describe five basic themes that have an important effect on transition. First, there are important brain changes in adolescence that leave an imbalance between risk taking and pleasure seeking behaviors and frontal executive function compared with adults. Second, puberty is a major cha

International workshop on insecticide resistance in vectors of arboviruses, December 2016, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Vector-borne diseases transmitted by insect vectors such as mosquitoes occur in over 100 countries and affect almost half of the world's population. Dengue is currently the most prevalent arboviral disease but chikungunya, Zika and yellow fever show increasing prevalence and severity. Vector control, mainly by the use of insecticides, play a key role in disease prevention but the use of the same chemicals for more than 40 years, together with the dissemination of mosquitoes by trade and environmental changes, resulted in the global spread of insecticide resistance. In this context, innovative

Vaccines against Shigella and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli: A summary of the 2016 VASE Conference.

PATH hosted the inaugural Vaccines Against Shigella and Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (VASE) Conference in Washington, DC in June 2016, bringing together experts from around the world for a highly collaborative forum to discuss progress in the development of new enteric vaccines. Diarrheal disease and long-term sequelae caused by infections with the bacterial pathogens Shigella and enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) pose a significant public health burden in low-income communities. There are currently no licensed vaccines against these pathogens, and the global health community has recently pri

Aging, the Central Nervous System, and Mobility in Older Adults: Interventions.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that the central nervous system (CNS) and mobility are closely linked. CNS-mediated mobility impairment may represent a potentially new and prevalent syndrome within the older adult populations. Interventions targeting this group may have the potential to improve mobility and cognition and prevent disability. METHODS: In 2012, the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA) sponsored a 3-year conference workshop series, "Aging, the CNS, and Mobility." The goal of this third and final conference was to (i) report on the state

SHOT conference report 2016: serious hazards of transfusion - human factors continue to cause most transfusion-related incidents.

The Annual SHOT Report for incidents reported in 2015 was published on 7 July at the SHOT symposium. Once again, the majority of reports (77·7%) were associated with mistakes ('human factors'). Pressures and stress in the hospital environment contributed to several error reports. There were 26 deaths where transfusion played a part, one due to haemolysis from anti-Wra (units issued electronically). The incidence of haemolysis due to this antibody has increased in recent years. Transfusion-associated circulatory overload is the most common contributor to death and major morbidity. Reports of de

Quality vaccines for all people: Report on the 16th annual general meeting of the Developing Countries Vaccine Manufacturers' Network, 05-07th October 2015, Bangkok, Thailand.

The Developing Countries Vaccine Manufacturers Network (DCVMN) assembled high-profile leaders from global health organisations and vaccine manufactures for its 16th Annual General Meeting to work towards a common goal: providing quality vaccines for all people. Vaccines contribute to a healthy community and robust health system; the Ebola outbreak has raised awareness of the threat and damage one single infectious disease can make, and it is clear that the world was not prepared. However, more research to better understand emerging infectious agents might lead to suitable vaccines which help p

International confederation for cleft lip and palate and related craniofacial anomalies task force report: palatoplasty in the speaking individual with unrepaired cleft palate.

Introduction : The benefits or otherwise of late palate repair in older children or adults are uncertain. The outcomes, particularly without appropriate speech therapy, are often disappointing. The issue is of special importance in the poorer countries where these patients are most commonly seen and where limited capacity and facilities may have to be rationed. Method : A task force was set up to report back to the International Congress in Orlando in May 2013. The chairman and some members were nominated by the organizers and further members were added during the discussion process. Some of t

International confederation for cleft lip and palate and related craniofacial anomalies task force report: speech assessment.

This paper describes the outcome of the "Speech Assessment" Task Force of the 12th International Congress of the Confederation for Cleft Lip and Palate and Related Craniofacial Anomalies, held in 2013. This task force attempted to identify a draft set of professional competencies required by speech professionals for the perceptual evaluation of cleft palate speech. The task force also generated a series of general and competency-specific questions that could be useful in subsequent evaluation and study of these competencies, particularly in regards to the application of these competencies to c

Update on the roles of distal airways in COPD.

This review is the summary of a workshop on the role of distal airways in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which took place in 2009 in Vence, France. The evidence showing inflammation and remodelling in distal airways and the possible involvement of these in the pathobiology, physiology, clinical manifestations and natural history of COPD were examined. The usefulness and limitations of physiological tests and imaging techniques for assessing distal airways abnormalities were evaluated. Ex vivo studies in isolated lungs and invasive measurements of airway resistance in living indi

Outbreak of Legionnaire's disease linked to a decorative fountain by molecular epidemiology.

The incubation period of Legionnaires' disease in five patients was traced to attendance at conventions in a hotel in the Orlando, Florida, area between January 6 and February 2, 1992. The five case patients (mean age, 69 years) were older than 55 randomly chosen controls (mean age, 53 years) who had also attended one of the same conventions (p = 0.007). All case patients were males, as were 40% of the controls (p = 0.01). No significant differences in exposures were found between case patients and controls, but all case patients and 65% of the controls reported exposure to a decorative founta
