The author reported 2 cases of vernal keratoconjunctivitis with corneal plaque showing a white board-like appearance. Conventional medications were not effective in both cases and during the course of the disease corneal ulcer developed followed by formation of corneal plaque. After the plaque spontaneously peeled off, or were surgically removed, the ulcers of both cases healed. The histological specimens from the 2 cases were examined by light and electron microscopy. This 9-year-old boy had a three-year history of vernal keratoconjunctivitis. A shield ulcer developed in the superior part of the cornea. The shield ulcer is a rare manifestation of the disease. METHODS: From 2000 to 2007, 27,693 neonates with newly diagnosed neonatal jaundice and 55,367 matched nonneonatal jaundice cohorts were identified. A survey of the management of eye disease in the community was carried out in two general practices over a three-month period. During this time there were 238 consultations by patients with ocular symptoms, making up 2.3% of all consultations and giving an annual consultation rate for eye disease of 66 per 1000 persons at risk. OBJECTIVES: To describe the type of complications related to contact lens wear seen in a hospital setting in Singapore.
METHODS: Data were collated over a 2-year period from April 1999 to March 2001, from all public hospitals in Singapore. A standardized clinical record form was completed by the attending doctor when a patient presented for contact lens-related complications.
