Transcriptomic and volatile signatures associated with maize defense against corn leaf aphid.

BACKGROUND: Maize (Zea mays L.) is a major cereal crop, with the United States accounting for over 40% of the worldwide production. Corn leaf aphid [CLA; Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch)] is an economically important pest of maize and several other monocot crops. In addition to feeding damage, CLA acts as a vector for viruses that cause devastating diseases in maize. We have shown previously that the maize inbred line Mp708, which was developed by classical plant breeding, provides heightened resistance to CLA. However, the transcriptomic variation conferring CLA resistance to Mp708 has not been i

Salicylic Acid Steers the Growth-Immunity Tradeoff.

Plants possess an effective immune system to combat most microbial attackers. The activation of immune responses to biotrophic pathogens requires the hormone salicylic acid (SA). Accumulation of SA triggers a plethora of immune responses (like massive transcriptional reprogramming, cell wall strengthening, and production of secondary metabolites and antimicrobial proteins). A tradeoff of strong immune responses is the active suppression of plant growth and development. The tradeoff also works the opposite way, where active growth and developmental processes suppress SA production and immune re

Metabolic engineering of microbial pathways for 5-aminolevulinic acid biosynthesis: Recent advances and biotechnological applications.

5-Aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is a basic precursor in the bioproduction of tetrapyrrole compounds, such as heme, chlorophyll, and vitamin B12. Its extensive applications in agriculture, medicine, cosmetics and animal feed industry have garnered substantial attention. In agriculture, 5-ALA works as an effective plant growth regulator, improving crop yield, stress tolerance, and product quality. Nonetheless, old chemical production of 5-ALA faces challenges because of complex reaction pathways, low productivity, and environmental concerns. This has directed towards a rising interest in sustainab

Mechanisms of methyl 2-methylbutyrate suppression on Aspergillus flavus growth and aflatoxin B1 biosynthesis.

Aspergillus flavus and subsequently produced carcinogenic aflatoxins frequently contaminate postharvest food crops, resulting in a threat to global food safety. Chemical preservatives are currently the main antifungal agents. However, fungal resistance effect, biological toxicity, and environmental contamination limit their practical applications. The application of natural volatile organic compounds has great potential for controlling fungal and mycotoxin contamination of postharvest food crops. This study therefore investigated the antifungal and anti-aflatoxigenic activities of the volatile

CHH demethylation of the BcMAM1 promoter contributes to cold tolerance in autotetraploid wucai (Brassica campestris L.).

Polyploidization has long been recognized as a driving force in plant adaptation to adverse environments. Chilling injury poses a major challenge to global crop production, and the regulatory hierarchies that govern cold adaptation in polyploid crops are unexplored. Here, we show that tetraploid wucai (Brassica campestris L.) displays greater cold tolerance than its diploid counterpart. Under prolonged cold stress, tetraploid plants displayed enhanced glucosinolate-associated transcriptional and metabolic responses, which may contribute to their improved stress adaptation. At the epigenetic le…

High sulfate exacerbates heavy metal toxicity in Chinese cabbage (Brassica chinensis L.) by impairing plant ROS scavenging in heavy metals contaminated soil.

Accumulation of heavy metals (HMs) and sulfates in farmland near mines is one of the most serious environmental problems posing a threat to crops and human health. Moderate sulfate alleviates the toxicity of HMs in crops, but the impact of high sulfate on crops in HM-contaminated soil remains unclear. Hence, we integrated physiological, transcriptomic and metabolomic profiling to investigate the effect of high sulfate on Chinese cabbage (Brassica chinensis L.) under HMs through controlled pot experiments. According to our results, compared with the HMs only group, the growth indicators of Chin

Climate-Driven Niche Tracking and Genomic Resilience Shape Future Distribution of a Widespread Agricultural Weed.

Understanding how agriculturally important species respond to environmental change is critical for maintaining productivity, mitigating agroecosystem threats and sustaining resilience. While crops have traditionally been the focus in agroecosystems, agricultural weeds are integral components that often face even stronger selective pressures, making them powerful models for investigating ecological and evolutionary responses to climatic and human-mediated challenges. Insights from how weeds adapt rapidly under these pressures can inform strategies to improve agricultural outcomes, since both pe

Mechanistic insights into nitric oxide signaling in shaping root architecture under challenging environments.

Global climate change continues to interrupt temperature and precipitation patterns, intensifying soil degradation and abiotic stresses that severely impair plant growth and productivity. As the demand for sustainable food systems grows combined with a rising global population, understanding how crops acclimatize to environmental stresses is important. Roots play an essential part in this adaptation by modulating dynamic organs for anchorage, nutrient acquisition, and as primary perception of abiotic stress. Understanding root architecture and their plasticity is reflected in the modulation of

Plant diseases are still the main problem for the reduction in crop yield and a threat to global food security. Additionally, excessive usage of chemical inputs such as pesticides and fungicides to control plant diseases have created another serious problem for human and environmental health. In view of this, the application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) for controlling plant disease incidences has been identified as an eco-friendly approach for coping with the food security issue. In this review, we have identified different ways by which PGPRs are capable of reducing phytopa

Critical review on soil phosphorus migration and transformation under freezing-thawing cycles and typical regulatory measurements.

Freezing-thawing period plays an important role in the soil nutrient cycling. The frequency of freezing-thawing cycles (FTCs) can directly affect the supply of effective soil nutrients, further influences the growth and development of crops. Phosphorus is one of the essential nutrients for crop growth, and almost no compounds in gas form in nature, which is non-renewable resources. In modern agricultural production, phosphorus required by plants is mainly from the soil, but the utilization rate of phosphorus fertilizer in soil is generally only 10%-25%. Therefore, it is of great significance t
