Triple treatment therapy for congenital stromal iris cyst.

BACKGROUND: Iris cyst can lead to iridocyclitis, angle closure, secondary glaucoma, corneal decompensation, band keratopathy, cataract, subl … sient application of MMC can cause permanent damage to the epithelial and goblet cells that secrete cyst fluid, hence resulting in regression of the cyst. Similarly, Kawaguchi et al.[3] aspirated cyst fluid with a 30G needle and left 0.3 ml of 10-3 mg/ml mitomycin-C for 5 min in the cavity, followed by BSS wash in a 32-year-old female with recurrent iris cys …

[Small intestine occlusion caused by the silent opening of liver hydatid cysts into the peritoneum. Apropos of an uncommon case].

The authors report one exceptional case of organic small bowel occlusion. The etiological diagnosis was performed by ultrasonographic examination and showed two hydatid cysts of the liver opened into the peritoneum and a peritoneal fluid collection corresponding to the hydatid fluid. The authors emphasize the absence of clinical symptoms during the opening of the hydatid cysts of the liver into the peritoneum and the usefulness of emergency ultrasonographic examination of the entire abdomen in cases of small bowel obstruction without any evident etiology.

Mechanisms of fluid secretion by polycystic epithelia.

We have sought to determine the mechanisms driving fluid secretion by the cystic epithelium in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). We have performed in vitro experiments on intact cysts dissected from discarded ADPKD kidneys, on monolayers of cells cultured from the cystic epithelium and on microcysts clonally derived from single cultured cells. These preparations absorb fluid in the control state but secrete fluid in response to native cyst fluid, to adenylate cyclase agonists and to permeant analogues of cAMP. Measurements of short-circuit current and transepithelial voltag…

Giant aneurysmal bone cyst of the scapula: A case report.

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign bone tumor affecting mainly children and young adults. It occurs in the metaphysis of the long bones. The scapula is a very rare location. Imaging may be highly suggestive of ABC in cases of an osteolytic, expansive, and hemorrhagic lesion with fluid-fluid levels and thin septa. The diagnosis must systematically be confirmed by performing a biopsy, in order to adopt the best therapeutic strategy. There are several therapeutic means, but wide resection remains the gold standard. The evolution is very variable and can go from spontaneous healing to recurren

[Aneurysmal bone cyst of the mandible: a case report].

Aneurysmal bone cyst is a benign lesion that is more commonly seen in long bones and the vertebra. Its occurrence in the craniofacial region is rare. A nine-year-old boy presented with a well-demarcated, painless, fixed mass, 3 x 3 cm in size, in the left preauricular region, with no fluctuation or crepitation. Computed tomography showed a lesion in the left mandibular ramus with a fluid-fluid level, extending to the mandibular condyle, with erosion to the adjacent cortex. Total curettage was performed via a transoral approach under general anesthesia. Histopathologic diagnosis was made as an

Occipital aneurysmal bone cyst secondary to eosinophilic granuloma.

We describe the case of a 2-year-old male patient with an aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) of the occiput secondary to unifocal eosinophilic granuloma (EG). The lesion presented as a painless mass of the scalp which had grown rapidly over the 2 weeks prior to admission. Radiologically, the lesion was osteolytic and multicystic with fluid-fluid levels. On histology, the cyst wall contained hemosiderin-laden histiocytes, spindle cells, multinucleated giant cells, Langerhans' cells and eosinophils. Surgical treatment consisted of en bloc resection. Fourteen months after surgery, the patient was well wi

Identification of Taenia solium antigens in cerebrospinal fluid and larval antigens from patients with neurocysticercosis.

Two antigens (190 and 230 kDa) of the larvae of Taenia solium were detected in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 14 of 18 patients in which neurocysticercosis was suspected. Nine of these were confirmed by histopathology. Seven antigens were detected in cyst fluid of T. solium larvae removed from the brains of 6 infected patients. Two of these antigens had the same Mr as the T. solium antigens detected in the CSF. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and electro-immunoblotting analyses were used for the identification and characterization. Antibodies in rabbit anti-larval antiserum and antibodies…

[Retention cyst of the prostate gland: report of a case].

A 55-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of pollakisuria and dysuria. Rectal examination revealed a normal prostate and did not show fluctuation or tenderness. Cystography and cystoscopic examination revealed a lesion projecting into the bladder cavity. An echogram showed an irregular internal echo at the left lobe of the prostate, but prostatic biopsy revealed benign prostatic hypertrophy. Transvesical removal of the prostatic cyst was performed. The cyst was about 3 cm in diameter and filled with yellow fluid (5.8 ml). The fluid contained no sperm and its acid phosphatase and z

Intraparenchymal Occipital Cyst Formation after Contralateral Dural Arteriovenous Fistula Obliteration: A Case Report.

Postoperative intracranial cyst formation is a rare complication. We report a case of an air-containing cyst in the contralateral left occipital lobe parenchyma after ligation of a dural arteriovenous fistula of the right transverse sinus. We reviewed related literature and discussed the mechanisms of this rare complication. A 59-year-old man presented with a right transverse sinus dural arteriovenous fistula with cortical reflux discovered incidentally during a brain checkup. The patient underwent surgical ligation of the draining vein combined with spinal drainage for intraoperative brain re

Radiologic differentiation of intracranial epidermoids from arachnoid cysts.

OBJECTIVE: Intracranial epidermoids (cholesteatomas) mimic arachnoid cysts in their radiologic characteristics, especially in the cerebellopontine angle. It is essential to differentiate the two conditions because they warrant different therapeutic interventions. The objective of this study is to elucidate the different radiologic characteristics of the conditions. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a retrospective study of 4 patients referred for a differential diagnosis and management of intracranial cystic lesions to the Departments of Neurotology/Neurosurgery and Neuroradiology in a terti

Congenital cerebrospinal fluid-containing intracranial abnormalities: a sonographic classification.

Ultrasound is useful as a primary modality for diagnosis of complex nonhydrocephalic intracranial malformations. We present 10 cases of intracranial cerebrospinal fluid containing abnormalities that may be diagnosed by ultrasound. Congenital abnormalities presented include holoprosencephaly, hydranencephaly, agenesis of the corpus callosum with interhemispheric cyst, porencephaly, schizencephaly, and arachnoid cyst. Ultrasound may be used in the fetus or neonate in detecting and separating these abnormalities from hydrocephalus.

Ovarian cyst rupture causing hemoperitoneum: imaging features and the potential for misdiagnosis.

BACKGROUND: To describe the spectrum of imaging findings and clinical presentations produced after rupture and hemorrhage of an ovarian cyst. METHODS: Imaging studies and hospital records of nine patients who were ultimately diagnosed with hemoperitoneum from a ruptured ovarian cyst were reviewed and categorized. RESULTS: Hemoperitoneum from a ruptured ovarian cyst presented a range of imaging findings. Although the imaging findings were dominated by hemoperitoneum, at least a vestige of the cyst could be identified in seven patients. The diagnosis of hemoperitoneum from a ruptured ovarian c

Giant infected splenic pseudocyst complicated by rupture in a patient with chronic Q fever.

Giant infected splenic pseudocysts are rare and may be difficult to diagnose due to overlapping clinical and imaging features with other cystic splenic lesions, including hydatid cysts and abscesses. At our institution, a 59-year-old male with no reported history of splenic trauma presented with weight loss, early satiety, and left upper quadrant pain. Computed tomography demonstrated a large calcified splenic cyst measuring up to 14.6 cm with internal septations and an air-fluid level, concerning for infection and rupture. The cyst fluid measured a median of 12 Hounsfield units, without perce…

Total excision of mesenteric cysts by laparoscopic surgery: report of two cases.

Mesenteric cysts are relatively rare tumors, and most patients present nonspecific abdominal symptoms until developing larger cysts. We report two cases of mesenteric cysts that were totally excised during laparoscopic surgery. The cysts of both patients were located in the mesenterium of the cecum or ascending colon. Under laparoscopy, the cyst was punctured to collect the cystic fluid for cytology and then completely removed without bowel resection. Histological examination revealed cystic lymphangiomas with endothelial cell lining. The postoperative course was uneventful. Laparoscopic treat

[Aneurysmal bone cyst: diagnostic role of computerized tomography and magnetic resonance].

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are relatively uncommon benign expansile osteolytic lesions characterized by multiple cavities with serum-blood levels and delimited by a thin periosteal external border. The differential diagnosis is difficult to make with conventional radiography, while CT and MRI are elective techniques. Ten patients with ABC (7 central and 3 eccentric lesions) were examined with CT and MRI. Four cysts were localized at the proximal femur, 2 in calcaneal, 2 in vertebral (cervical and dorsal), 1 in tibial and 1 in iliac sites. Diagnostic criteria were the presence of fluid-fluid l
