BACKGROUND: Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a disease of the urinary bladder in which the lining may become inflamed and ulcerated, resulting in pain, urinary frequency and urgency. While traditional hypnotherapy has been shown effective in treating IC, some clients do not want the use of suggestion, daily self-hypnosis or extended treatment.

We present the case of a patient with lupus enteritis accompanied by both lupus cystitis and lupus nephritis without a history of systemic lupus erythematosus. Uncomplicated urinary infections are a significant and growing cause of morbidity amongst young women. Commonly these infections are caused by Escherichia coil or Staphylococcus saprophyticus. Lupus cystitis is a rare interstitial inflammatory disease of the bladder seen in systemic lupus erythematosus that usually occurs in association with gastrointestinal manifestations, and occasionally with central nervous system involvement. There are few reported pediatric cases. We describe this entity as the presenting manifestations of lupus in an adolescent female.

Decision-making on cystitis in general practice was studied by addressing 1171 general practitioners of whom 909 responded. A case history was supplied with a test-strip result where leucocyte esterase was 1 + and the nitrite field either positive or negative. Very few epidemiologic studies of interstitial cystitis (IC) have been published over the past 5 years. One population-based study focused only on women and suggested that the prevalence of the IC symptom complex in the United States is much higher than previously reported. A patient with chronic urticaria and angioedema developed endoscopically confirmed interstitial cystitis. Bladder biopsy revealed bladder mastocytosis with > 60 mast cells/mm2 (normal < 10) in the detrusor and submucosa. Most of the mast cells were activated and degranulated. The occurrence of IC in a patient with urticaria and angioedema, diseases both associated with mast cell pathophysiology, supports the role of mast cells in interstitial cystitis.

The results of ileocystoplasty in nine patients with interstitial cystitis were evaluated.
