OBJECTIVE: To analyze the results of excluding confusable diseases in patients with a presumptive diagnosis of interstitial cystitis (IC).
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of consecutive patients with IC between October 2005 and December 2019.
RESULTS: Patients with pelvic pain underwent an initial workup. Of these, 646 patients (164 men, 25.4%; 482 women, 74.6%) underwent observational cystoscopy under the suspicion of IC. Fourteen patients had genitourinary tract malignancies (2.2%) (bladder cancer, n = 13; prostate cancer, n = 1). Of the 13 patients with

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) presents a significant challenge for urologists in terms of management, owing to its chronic nature and adverse impact on patient quality of life. Given the potential distinction between two disease entities within IC/BPS, namely Hunner-type IC and BPS without Hunner lesion, there is a need for an optimal therapeutic approach that focuses on the bladder lesions in Hunner-type IC. In cases where Hunner lesions are observed, complete transurethral ablation of these lesions should be prioritized as the initial intervention, as it has demonstrat

BACKGROUND: Hunner-type interstitial cystitis (HIC) is an immunological, chronic inflammatory disease. The efficacy of corticosteroid as a treatment for HIC is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety of low-dose oral prednisolone (PSL) treatment for patients with refractory HIC.
DESIGN SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective observational study reviewed the clinical outcomes of 31 patients with refractory HIC who received oral PSL daily (initial dose, 5.0 or 7.5 mg) for at least 12 mo between 2016 and 2023. The dose was tapered to the minimum that maintained symptom relief

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether there is a higher prevalence of anxiety-depressive disorders in women with BPS/IC (bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis) than in women with chronic non-neoplastic pain with or without fibromyalgia, to examine possible correlations between urological and psychiatric symptoms.
METHODS: The patients included in the study were divided into two groups: 1) group 0: patients with an existing diagnosis of BPS/IC. BPS/IC was confirmed by reviewing medical record; group 1+2: patients with chronic non-neoplastic pain, suffering from fibrom

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The Vaginal Health Index Score (VHIS) and vulvodynia swab tests are used to assess vaginal health and vulvodynia. However, few studies have used these tests in patients with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). IC/BPS is a chronic, debilitating disorder, characterised by urinary frequency, urinary urgency and pelvic pain. It adversely affects organs adjacent to the urinary system, leading to complications of sexual dysfunction. This study was aimed at understanding sexual dysfunction in patients with IC/BPS, as well as deterioration of vaginal heal

INTRODUCTION: Evidence-based psychological strategies are being used as clinicians look for helpful interventions for patients diagnosed with the enigmatic chronic urological pelvic pain condition of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). Pain and pain catastrophizing are associated with chronic pelvic pain outcomes but the longitudinal role of catastrophizing on patient pain in IC/BPS remains unknown.
METHODS: Women with IC/BPS were recruited from tertiary care clinics across North America and completed a battery of questionnaires, including demographics, pain, depression, cat

BACKGROUND: Hunner's interstitial cystitis (HIC) is a complex disorder characterized by pelvic pain, disrupted urine storage, and Hunner lesions seen on cystoscopy. There are few effective diagnostic biomarkers. In the present study, we used the novel machine learning tool CIBERSORT to measure immune cell subset infiltration and potential novel diagnostic biomarkers for HIC.
METHODS: The GSE11783 and GSE57560 datasets were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus for analysis. Ten HIC and six healthy samples from GSE11783 were analyzed using the CIBERSORT algorithm. Gene Set Enrichment Ana

Interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS) is a chronic pelvic pain (CPP) syndrome that is frequently seen in female patients. Since its molecular mechanism and etiopathogenesis are not clearly elucidated, its treatment options are limited. Phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors act on nitric oxide (NO) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and are an effective treatment option in some CPP syndromes. We discuss the case of a 44-year-old female patient who presented to our clinic with a two-year history of frequent urination and pain in the pelvic area. The cystoscopy of the pa

PURPOSE: Our objective was to evaluate the associations with interstitial cystitis during pregnancy using a United States inpatient database.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study utilizing the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project. ICD-9 code number 595.1 was used to extract cases of chronic interstitial cystitis and these pregnancies were compared to pregnancies without chronic interstitial cystitis, using the Chi-squared test to evaluate nominal variables. A multivariate logistic regression model was subsequently us

UNLABELLED: Some recent studies evaluated the introduction of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) in the diagnosis of bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC).
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether DW-MRI can contribute to noninvasive diagnosis of BPS/IC. The agreement between two raters (2 radiologists involved in the study) was also evaluated, the relevance of the "operator-dependent" factor defined.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-two female patients with a diagnosis of BPS-IC were recruited and performed DW-MRI. The same investigation was also performed in 20 patient

Interstitial cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by visceral pain and voiding symptoms. IC/BPS is still an unsolved enigma with ineffective diagnosis criteria and treatment. A main limitation in IC/BPS understanding is the lack of appropriate preclinical model. Cyclophosphamide (CYP) is commonly used as an experimental model for IC/BPS in rodent. However, the proposed models are very aggressive, contrasting with what occurs in clinic, and often associated with severe toxicity and high mortality rate. In addition, visceral pain, the hallmark s

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review findings from empirical studies assessing the role of psychosocial factors in bladder pain syndrome and interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC).
RECENT FINDINGS: There is a high rate of psychosocial comorbidity in BPS/IC, including elevated levels of anxiety and depression. Recent studies assessing the role of illness perceptions in BPS/ICrelate poorer illness perceptions to more unhelpful illness coping patterns. Conversely, positive illness perceptions including self-efficacy in illness management are associated with more adaptive coping behaviors such as exercising and

INTRODUCTION: The phenotyping system UPOINT has proven effective in classifying patients with Urologic Pelvic Pain Syndromes in a clinically meaningful way and to guide therapy. While highly successful in men with chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS), UPOINT is more limited in patients with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS) since by definition all patients have the urinary and organ specific phenotype. Furthermore, AUA guidelines recommend a sequential tiered approach to therapy rather than the multimodal UPOINT scheme. We sought to modify UPOINT to be more practical and e

OBJECTIVES: To address challenges in the diagnosis and classification of storage lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), we sought to define the fundamental features of overactive bladder (OAB) and interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), two conditions with considerable symptomatic overlap. Through retrospective comparison of self-reported symptoms in women with a range of clinical presentations and symptom severities, we have attempted to refine the diagnostic features of OAB and IC/BPS and to develop a novel clinical nomogram to improve patient screening and classification.

INTRODUCTION: Interstitial cystitis is difficult to treat and may affect adolescents.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old girl presented with severe pain upon terminal micturition that persisted for approximately 2 hours. The pain had been present for more than 1 month. Cystoscopy revealed severe erosion throughout the trigone. Transurethral fulguration did not improve her symptoms. However, complete electric resection of the ulcer markedly reduced the symptom. After complete resection, pain on urination disappeared and she has had no pain without medication for 15 months.
CONCLUSION: Complete

PURPOSE: We evaluated 5 different rat models using different agents in order to establish a standard animal model for interstitial cystitis (IC) in terms of the functional and pathologic characteristics of the bladder.
METHODS: Five IC models were generated in 8-week-old female Sprague-Dawley rats via transurethral instillation of 0.1M hydrogen chloride (HCl) or 3% acetic acid (AA), intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide (CYP) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS), or subcutaneous injection of uroplakin II (UPK2). After generating the IC models, conscious cystometry was performed on days 3, 7, a
