As part of a broad survey of the trematodes of damselfishes (Pomacentridae) in the tropical Indo-West Pacific, zoogonids were collected from multiple localities in Australia, New Caledonia, and French Polynesia. All zoogonid specimens collected were consistent with the subfamily Lecithostaphylinae, and morphological and molecular data (ITS2 and 28S rDNA, and cox1 mtDNA) were generated for most host-locality combinations to enable an integrative species delimitation. The collection comprised three species: Deretrema stratiotes n. sp. from four species of Abudefduf Forsskål from Ningaloo Reef in

The neotropical fish genus Astyanax (Characidae) and its associated helminths migrated northward from South America following the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI): ca. 150 Astyanax spp. are found throughout South and Central America, up to the Mexico-USA border. Most characids are distributed south of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB), which bisects the country and represents a major transition zone between the neotropical and nearctic realms. Here, we characterize parasites of the monogenean genus Gyrodactylus infecting Astyanax spp. in Mexico: Astyanax aeneus south of the TMBV,

Adult Lecithaster mugilis Yamaguti, 1970 were found in Moolgarda seheli, Valamugil engeli and Liza subviridis in the coastal waters of Cat Ba Island (Halong Bay, Vietnam). Specimens of Lecithaster sudzuhensis n. sp. were found in Mugil cephalus located in an estuary of the Kievka River in the Primorsky region of Russia. Studies have demonstrated that these species share significant morphometric similarities with each other and with specimens of L. helodes Overstreet, 1973 isolated from M. cephalus and Mugil curema from the Mississippi Sound and adjacent waters. These three species differ from

BACKGROUND: Moose (Alces alces) are a culturally and economically valued species in Minnesota, where the northeast population has decreased by 60 % since 2006. The cause of the decline is currently unclear; however, parasites, predation, and climate change have all been implicated. Nematode parasites are important pathogens in North American moose, potentially causing severe disease and mortality. Recent spread of Rumenfilaria andersoni, a filarioid nematode of moose, has been documented in Finnish cervids; however, little is known about the epidemiology of this parasite in North America.

Haemonchus populations were collected from cattle from mid-western and eastern Southern US (four and six populations, respectively) to determine the relative prevalence of Haemonchus contortus and Haemonchus placei and the frequency of the three isotype-1 β-tubulin polymorphisms associated with benzimidazole resistance. A minimum of 32 individual adult worms were genotyped at position 24 of the rDNA ITS-2 for each population to determine species identity (296 worms in total). One population from Georgia was identified as 100% H. contortus with the remaining nine populations identified as 100%

Members of the Anisakidae are known to infect over 200 pelagic fish species and have been frequently used as biological tags to identify fish populations. Despite information on the global distribution of Anisakis species, there is little information on the genetic diversity and population structure of this genus, which could be useful in assessing the stock structure of their fish hosts. From 2005 through 2008, 148 larval anisakids were recovered from Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) in the California Current upwelling zone and were genetically sequenced. Sardines were captured off Vancouver

Fasciola spp. found in Asian countries are diversified in nature, and they should therefore be characterized by spermatogenesis, ploidy and genetic differentiation as well as morphology. The present study showed that spermic diploid and aspermic triploid forms of Fasciola occurred in Vietnam. The spermic diploid specimens were accurately identified as F. gigantica, while the aspermic triploids could not be identified on the basis of their morphology by the ratio of body length and width and DNA sequences of nuclear ribosomal ITS1 and mitochondrial NDI and COI genes. The molecular data also ind

BACKGROUND: Veterinary diagnostics aid intervention strategies, track zoonoses, and direct selective breeding programs in livestock. In ruminants, gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasites are a major cause of production losses, but morphologically similar species limit our understanding of how specific GIN co-infections impact health in resource-limited settings. To estimate the presence and relative abundance of GINs and other helminths at the species level, we sought to develop a low-cost and low-resource molecular toolkit applied to goats from rural Malawi smallholdings.
METHODS: Goats we

A cDNA fragment encoding the complete coding region of a 27-kDa protein (p27) of Dirofilaria immitis was cloned. Antibody to the recombinant p27 bound to hypodermal tissues of third (L3) and fourth stage larvae (L4) of D. immitis and to both the hypodermis and the cuticle of L3s of Onchocerca volvulus, as visualized by immunoelectronmicroscopy. The deduced amino acid sequence of the central and C-terminal regions of p27 (amino acids S83 to H222) is 18-36% identical to members of the sHsp/alpha-crystallin family of proteins. The homologous region is thought to be responsible for the molecular c

Hemicriconemoides spp. are sheathoid, root-ectoparasitic nematodes with complex taxonomy due to overlapping morphology and cryptic diversity. In this study, an integrative taxonomic approach combining morphology and molecular data supports the characterization of Hemicriconemoides vietnamensis sp. n. recovered from the rhizosphere of roses in Vietnam. The new species females are distinguished by a slightly ventrally curved body with a closely fitting sheath lacking anastomoses, a lip region with two annuli and a protruding first annulus, a long (62-68 μm) mostly straight stylet with rounded, p

Echinococcus multilocularis is a parasitic tapeworm responsible for alveolar echinococcosis (AE), a life-threatening zoonotic disease. Understanding its genetic diversity and historical spread is critical for developing effective control measures. Previous studies have suggested Central Asia as a potential origin of the parasite, but comprehensive global analyses encompassing multiple regions and time periods have been limited. This study aimed to analyze the genetic diversity, population structure, and phylogeography of E. multilocularis by sequencing the complete mitogenome from 384 isolates

In this report, morphological and molecular characteristics are provided for two members of the subfamily Microphalloidea distributed in the south of the Russian Far East. Some of trematode specimens found in larvae of mayflies, stoneflies, and caddisflies and then experimentally reared to the adult stage in hamsters, according to their morphological features, belong to the species Acanthatrium ovatum previously recorded from Japanese bats. Molecular data has confirmed their membership in the family Lecithodendriidae and similarity to trematodes identified as Lecithodendriidae sp. F from Japan

Haemonchus contortus is a parasitic nematode that causes significant economic losses in ruminant livestock worldwide. In this study, we assessed the global genetic diversity and population structure of H. contortus using mitochondrial COX1 and ribosomal ITS2 sequences retrieved from the NCBI GenBank database. In total, 324 haplotypes of the COX1 and 72 haplotypes of the ITS2 were identified. The haplotype diversity values were all higher than 0.5, and the nucleotide diversity values were higher than 0.005. The Tajima's D value for COX1 (-1.65634) was higher than that for ITS2 (-2.60400). Host specificity, a trait describing how many different hosts a parasite can infect, ranges from strict specialists for parasites associated to a single host species, to generalists for those able to infect several host species, which may even be phylogenetically unrelated. Monogenea are generally considered to be specialist parasites, but this appreciation may be an artifact arising from biased or limited sampling. Here, we evaluate host specificity of species of Gyrodactylus infecting fishes of the family Profundulidae collected in southern Mexico and, crucially, encompassing the whole distr

BACKGROUND: Necator americanus is the predominant species causing hookworm infections in humans. Despite advancements in prevention strategies, mild cases of infection still occur, highlighting the need for improved detection technology. Recombinase Polymerase Amplification (RPA) is an isothermal molecular diagnostic known for its sensitivity, speed, portability, and widespread application in detecting various pathogens. Although several molecular assays are available for N. americanus, they have limitations in detecting mild N. americanus infections.
METHODS: Fluorescent RPA primers and prob

The genus Flapocephalus Deshmukh, 1979, is a little-known group of lecanicephalidean cestodes parasitizing cowtail rays (genus Pastinachus Rüppell) mainly in the Indo-Pacific region. Since the erection of the genus, with Flapocephalus trygonis Deshmukh, 1979, as the type species, and the description of a second species, Flapocephalus saurashtri Shinde and Deshmukh, 1979, both from Pastinachus sephen (Fabricius) from India, reports of this genus have been restricted mainly to brief mentions or discussion of its validity and taxonomic placement. More recently, phylogenetic analyses based on mole

Canine hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum), a gastrointestinal nematode of domestic dogs, principally infects the small intestine of dogs and has the potential to cause zoonotic disease. In greyhounds and pet dogs in the USA, A. caninum has been shown to be resistant to multiple anthelmintics. We conducted a molecular survey of benzimidazole resistance in A. caninum from dogs at veterinary diagnostic centers in Australia and New Zealand. First, we implemented an internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-2 rDNA deep amplicon metabarcoding sequencing approach to ascertain the species of hookworms infecting d

Here, we report for the first time the snail intermediate host for the Amphimerus liver fluke, a foodborne trematodiasis. In Ecuador, Amphimerus of the Opisthorchiidae family, infects humans, cats, and dogs, in the tropical Pacific-coast region. Opisthorchiidae comprising also Clonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis sp., and Metorchis sp., have complex life cycles involving a definitive and two intermediate hosts. We identified morphologically and investigated the presence and prevalence of Amphimerus cercaria and DNA in freshwater snails collected in a human-amphimeriasis endemic region in Ecuador,

The detection of Schistosoma mansoni infection in both its intermediate (snail) and definitive (human) hosts is useful in providing information on the transmission of schistosomiasis. Three pairs of previously designed PCR primers (SM1-7, SMF/R & ND5) used for the detection of S. mansoni infection were tested. We assess the utility of each of these primer sets for detecting S. mansoni infection both in artificially exposed laboratory bred Biomphalaria glabrata, and field infected African Biomphalaria sudanica and Biomphalaria pfeifferi. Two of the three primer sets (SMF/R & ND5) detected S. ma
