Compensatability and contact dermatitis in the canning industry.

If reports from the Workmen's Compensation Commissioner are compared with international figures, dermatitis in South African industry appears to be underestimated. Compensation for occupational dermatitis in South Africa relies on the presence of a positive patch test. A prevalence study at a canning factory in the western Cape showed high rates of dermatoses. No association could be shown between dermatitis, intertrigo or chronic paronychia and patch-test positivity. It is argued that patch-test positivity is purely coincidental to the dermatoses and that patch testing has little role to play

Studies on contact dermatitis in stomatological staff.

84 patients with contact dermatitis (38 dentists, 18 dental nurses and 28 dental technicians) were studied. All were patch tested with standard patch test series of the CMEA countries and with some professional allergens. 31 (36.9%) of them had allergic occupational contact dermatitis and 39 (46.2%) had irrtiant contact dermatitis. The highest prevalence of irritant contact dermatitis was found among dental surgeons. The percentage of atopics in the group of patients with irritant contact dermatitis was twice greater compared to that in the group of patients with allergic contact dermatitis. T

Nuts As a Cause of Contact Dermatitis of the Hands.

To evaluate contact hypersensitivity to some of the commonly used Indian nuts, patch tests were undertaken with cashew nuts, ground nuts, almonds and pistachio in 3 groups of individuals: (1) patients exposed to the corresponding nut and having dermatitis on their fingertips, (2) controls having no dermatitis, but exposed to the nut, and (3) unexposed group. A paste prepared by Cushing the nut and used as such gave positive patch test 'reactions in, all the 6 patients tested with cashew - nut, ground - nut and almonds, and these looked to be irritant reactions. Further patch tests with these t

Condiments and Contact Dermatitis of the Finger - Tips.

Patch tests were undertaken with 16 condiments in 4 groups of patients which included exposed patients, exposed controls, unexposed patients and unexposed controls. As the interpretation of the positive patch test reaction was similar in both the unexposed patients and unexposed controls, these two were combined into one (unexposed groups). Positive reactions were obtained in a variable number of individuals in each of these groups but the tests were generally more frequently positive and more severe in the exposed patients and exposed controls, compared to the unexposed groups. The number of

Allergic contact dermatitis and conjunctivitis to corticosteroids.

This is a report of two patients suspected of having allergic dermato-conjunctivitis due to corticosteroids. Both were tested with the constituents of the ointments they were using, that is, corticosteroids, antibacterial agents, preservatives, and other active ingredients of the ointment bases. Both patients showed positive allergic patch test reactions to the respective corticosteroid betamethasone valerate, and one to hydrocortisone, neomycin, and a rubber additive. The importance of routine patch testing in ophthalmic practice to detect sensitizers in cases of allergy is mentioned. Hydroco

The combined diagnosis of allergic and irritant contact dermatitis in a retrospective cohort of 1000 consecutive patients with occupational contact dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of combined allergic and irritant contact dermatitis is an accepted subdiagnosis for hand dermatitis, and it is often considered in a patient with contact dermatitis, a positive and relevant patch test result, and wet work exposure. We therefore hypothesize that it is arbitrary for wet work exposure to be taken into consideration in a patient with newly diagnosed relevant contact allergy. Furthermore, an overestimation of the diagnosis will probably occur if the criteria for wet work exposure are applied correctly, as many occupations have an element of wet work. OBJ

An epidemic outbreak of papular and follicular contact dermatitis to tocopheryl linoleate in cosmetics. Swiss Contact Dermatitis Research Group.

BACKGROUND: In Spring 1992, an epidemic outbreak of papular and follicular rashes caused by a new line of cosmetics occurred throughout Switzerland. OBJECTIVE: Epidemiological and clinical data were collected in order to identify the offending agent and to specify the pathophysiological mechanisms. METHODS: The data concerning 263 patients seen by dermatologists plus 642 additional cases directly reported by consumers to the manufacturer were analyzed. Seventy-seven patients were patch-tested, 26 extensively, and 15 performed a repeated open application test for a duration of 4 weeks. Contro

Contact allergy to oxidized geraniol among Swedish dermatitis patients-A multicentre study by the Swedish Contact Dermatitis Research Group.

BACKGROUND: Geraniol is a widely used fragrance terpene, and is included in fragrance mix I. Geraniol is prone to autoxidation, forming the skin sensitizers geranial, neral, and geraniol-7-hydroperoxide. Oxidized geraniol has previously been patch tested in 1 clinic, giving 1% to 4.6% positive reactions in consecutive patients when tested at 2% to 11%. AIM: To compare test reactions to pure and oxidized geraniol, to compare 2 different test concentrations of oxidized geraniol and to investigate the pattern of concomitant reactions to fragrance markers of the baseline series in a multicentre s

Occupational contact dermatitis in hairdressers: an analysis of patch test data from the Danish contact dermatitis group, 2002-2011.

BACKGROUND: Occupational contact dermatitis among hairdressers is frequent, owing to daily exposure to irritants and allergens. OBJECTIVES: To identify sensitization to the most common allergens associated with the occupation of hairdressing. METHODS: Patch test results of 399 hairdressers and 1995 matched controls with contact dermatitis, registered by the Danish Contact Dermatitis Group between January 2002 and December 2011, were analysed. All patients were patch tested with the European baseline series, and hairdressers were additionally tested with the hairdressing series. RESULTS: Occ

Common contact allergens associated with eyelid dermatitis: data from the North American Contact Dermatitis Group 2003-2004 study period.

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis can be manifest as an eruption confined to the eyelids. In regard to this specific presentation, only limited information on which to base the selection of patch tests for proper evaluation is available. OBJECTIVE: To identify the contact allergens most frequently found to be both patch test positive and relevant when only the eyelids are involved. METHODS: Data collected from 2003 to 2004 by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG) were analyzed for relevant allergens in the setting of dermatitis on the eyelids only. Data on eyelid dermatit

Simplifying Allergic Contact Dermatitis Management with the Contact Allergen Management Program 2.0.

For patients, managing allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) can be like a strategic game of poker-many begin with a few chips, but only those who can skillfully read the cards and avoid common pitfalls can maximize their winnings. Physicians should be aware of the challenges patients may face when avoiding allergens as well as long-term avoidance strategies. Herein, we discuss the essential role of contact allergen databases to support patient education and management of ACD. The updated Contact Allergen Management Program (CAMP) 2.0 is a valuable resource to enhance self- and physician-directed

Risk factors and common contact allergens in facial allergic contact dermatitis patients.

BACKGROUND: Facial dermatitis is commonly encountered in dermatologic practice. It is sometimes difficult to manage because its causative factors may be multiple and difficult to diagnose. OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to identify the characteristics, patch test results, and final diagnoses of facial dermatitis patients who were referred to a contact dermatitis clinic and to identify factors associated with facial allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed case records of facial dermatitis patients who underwent patch testing at the clinic during the period

Skin contact irritation conditions the development and severity of allergic contact dermatitis.

Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is a frequent inflammatory skin disease induced by skin contact with low molecular weight chemicals such as haptens endowed with proinflammatory properties. Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a frequent complication of ICD and is mediated by hapten-specific T cells primed in lymph nodes by skin emigrating dendritic cells. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between ICD and ACD to 2,4-dinitrofluorobenezene (DNFB) in C57BL/6 and BALB/C mice, which develop a severe and a moderate skin inflammation, respectively. Upon a single skin painting wit
