Occupational dermatoses among Polish private farmers, 1991-1999.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about work-related skin diseases among Polish self-employed farmers. In the National Register of Occupational Diseases, private farmers are placed in one category together with other agricultural workers, despite fundamental differences in compensation legislation and separate insurance institutions. The Agricultural Social Insurance Fund reports only on numbers of compensated cases. The aim of this study was to create reliable statistics on occupational dermatoses among private farmers. METHODS: All cases of work-related skin diseases diagnosed from 1991 to 1999 w

A case series of dupilumab-treated allergic contact dermatitis patients.

Atopic dermatitis is characterized by skin barrier abnormalities and immune dysregulation with increased TH 2 signaling playing a central role. Investigations of allergic contact dermatitis suggest that certain allergens may also activate particular T cell signatures such as TH 2-dominant responses to fragrance and rubber. We present a case series of patients with allergic contact dermatitis who were successfully treated with dupilumab, a biologic developed for atopic dermatitis that dampens TH 2 signaling. In our cohort of three patients, two had extensive allergic contact dermatitis on their

Hand eczema: diagnosis and management.

The most common clinical presentations of hand eczema are atopic hand dermatitis, pompholyx, and contact dermatitis (irritant contact dermatitis [ICD], allergic contact dermatitis [ACD]). The diagnosis of hand dermatitis is determined by a review of the patient's medical history, a physical examination including other body sites as well as the hands, and a thorough overview of the patient's daily activities with emphasis on occupation and hobbies. Irritant contact dermatitis usually is diagnosed by the absence of a positive patch test result; however, patch testing is essential in confirming a

Chemical allergy in humans: fresh perspectives.

There is considerable interest in the immunobiological processes through which the development of allergic sensitization to chemicals is initiated and orchestrated. One of the most intriguing issues is the basis for the elicitation by chemical sensitizers of different forms of allergic reaction; that is, allergic contact dermatitis or sensitization of the respiratory tract associated with occupational asthma. Studies in rodents have revealed that differential forms of allergic sensitization to chemicals are, in large part at least, a function of the selective development of discrete functional

Immediate skin and mucosal symptoms from pot plants and vegetables in gardeners and greenhouse workers.

Short-lived occupational skin symptoms of irritant or urticarial nature were commonly reported among 253 attendants in a clinical study on occupational dermatitis in Danish gardeners and greenhouse workers. Aimed prick or scratch-patch testing for immediate skin and mucosal symptoms was performed in 105 persons with plants as is. 35 persons (33%) had at least 1 positive reaction and a family history of, or personal, atopy was significantly more prevalent among these compared to attendants with negative reactions. Positive histamine release tests made immunologic etiology probable in Schlumberg

Irritant nail dermatitis of chemical depilatory product presenting with koilonychia.

Chemical hair removal products are available as creams, gels, powders, aerosols and roll-ons and all of these forms work in the same way by breaking chemical bonds between sulfur atoms in the protein. Currently, the common active ingredients of these products are calcium thioglycolate, potassium thioglycolate, arsenic and sulfur minerals. Sulfur and arsenic containing products are important toxic chemicals which are mainly used for removing hair in developing countries. Irritant contact dermatitis accounts for 80% of all contact dermatitis reactions which are often occupation-related. Toluene

Airborne contact dermatitis and asthma in a nail art operator.

Nail art (creation and decoration of artificial nails) is a growing fashion trend. Proportionally to its popularity, the number of allergic reactions to the materials used has recently increased. We report the case of a nail art operator who developed occupational allergy to acrylates, manifested with the unusual simultaneous presence of asthma and dermatitis. Cutaneous lesions only affected areas not covered by individual protection devices or clothes, even if such areas were not in direct contact with acrylates, suggesting airborne allergic contact dermatitis. While respiratory problems were

Add-on diagnostic tool for allergic contact dermatitis: the strip patch test.

The "conventional" patch test (PT) is considered to be the "gold standard" in diagnosing allergic contact dermatitis. However, the method of patch testing has repeatedly been criticized for its limited diagnostic accuracy and it is therefore by no means uniformly accepted as a reliable test method. Basic idea of the "strip" patch test (SPT), a modification by repeated tape stripping prior to patch testing, is to increase the quantity of allergen reaching the deeper epidermal cell layers and, thus, to increase the test sensitivity. The SPT according to our proposed standardized protocol is prom

The Medical Necessity of Comprehensive Patch Testing.

Allergic contact dermatitis is associated with significant disease and economic burden in the United States. To properly manage allergic contact dermatitis, it is important to accurately identify the substance(s) implicated in the dermatitis to prevent disease recurrence. The commercially available T.R.U.E Test (36 allergens) screening panel has been reported to have a conservative hypothetical allergen detection rate of 66.0%, at most. Importantly, these calculations are based on the 78% of patients who had clinically relevant reactions to allergens present on the North American Contact Derma

Occupational contact urticaria caused by food - a systematic clinical review.

Food industry workers are at increased risk for occupational contact urticaria (CU). There are many foodstuffs that have been reported to cause occupational CU, including seafood, meat, vegetables, and fruits. The aim of this review is to summarize all reported occupational cases of CU in the food industry. This is a systematic review based on a MEDLINE search of articles in English and German and a manual search, between 1990 and 2014, to summarize the case reports and case series of occupational CU in the food industry. Many different foodstuffs have been implicated in CU. Occupational CU ha

Risk factors of occupational skin diseases among traditional batik manufacturing workers in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

OBJECTIVE: Batik is one of the Indonesian traditional arts made by decorating fabric using the resist dyeing technique. Currently, batik manufacturing serves as an important source of livelihood in Indonesia. However, the production process of traditional batik involves a range of chemicals and some repetitive physical movements, making batik production inseparable from physical and chemical hazards which increase the risk of developing occupational skin diseases (OSD). This study aimed to identify the risk factors related to OSD, including occupational contact dermatitis (OCD), among traditio

A recommended occupational exposure limit for formaldehyde based on irritation.

In recent years, several regulatory agencies and professional societies have recommended an occupational exposure limit (OEL) for formaldehyde. This article presents the findings of a panel of experts, the Industrial Health Foundation panel, who were charged to identify an OEL that would prevent irritation. To accomplish this task, they critiqued approximately 150 scientific articles. Unlike many other chemicals, a large amount of data is available upon which to base a concentration-response relationship for human irritation. A mathematical model developed by Kane et al. (1979) for predicting

[Etiology of contact urticaria with special reference to occupational substances].

On the basis of an extensive literature search (DIMI, MEDLINE-status at June 1992), the causes of contact urticaria so far known are displayed in tables. The contact urticariogens can be divided into (1) chemically defined substances and (2) chemically undefined biological materials. The causes most frequently encountered in 16 professions are given. Numerous agents are known for medical professions (physicians, nurses, dentists and dental technicians, veterinary surgeons). Today, the most frequent single cause of contact urticaria is probably the presence of latex proteins in rubber (gloves,
