The Role of Communication Affordances in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Facebook and WhatsApp Support Groups.

(1) Background: Digital health research has indicated that people with stigmatized health problems are drawn to online support groups (OSGs) because these groups help them to manage such conditions. However, little is known about how media affordances-interactions between the technology and the user-reconfigure the ways in which stigmatized individuals use OSGs and interact with others like themselves. (2) Method: The current study applied an affordance framework to evaluate how Facebook and WhatsApp support groups can help military veterans and their partners cope with post-traumatic stress d

A case of giant arteriovenous shunt in a renal carcinoma.

We present the case of a 51 year-old-white male with a giant right renal arteriovenous fistula secondary to a carcinoma. Neither the aorta nor the kidneys were visualized after the injection of 60 mL of contrast media into the abdominal aorta. Moreover, the right kidney could not be visualized after 30 mL of contrast media were injected selectively into the right renal artery. This was due to a great arteriovenous shunt through the right kidney. The right renal angiogram was obtained through digital imaging, after injecting contrast media into the right renal artery, previously occluded by a b

Longitudinal effects of social media feedback on psychological distress in young adults: the mediating roles of self-esteem and social comparison.

BACKGROUND: Social media feedback, particularly likes and comments, has become an important source of social validation for young adults. However, the longitudinal effects of such feedback on psychological distress and the underlying psychological mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: This study employed a three-wave longitudinal design over eight months to examine the effects of social media likes and comments feedback on depressive and anxiety symptoms among 398 Chinese young adults (mean age = 21.34 years, 58.3% female). Cross-lagged panel models were used to test bidirectional relationships

The effect of physical exercise on social appearance anxiety among college students: the serial mediating role of social media addiction and self-objectification.

BACKGROUND: Social appearance anxiety (SAA) has become a prominent mental health issue among Chinese college students, and it is particularly exacerbated in the mobile Internet era, marked by the pervasive use of social media. As an active health-promoting behavior, physical exercise is widely recognized as being able to effectively alleviate individuals' mental health problems, yet its underlying psychological mechanisms remain inadequately explored. Therefore, this study is based on social comparison theory, this study aims to investigate the relationship between physical exercise and SAA am

Co-developmental trajectories of specific problematic usage of the internet: Associations with microsystem predictors and adolescents' mental health outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Spectrum Hypothesis posits that various forms of problematic usage of the internet (PUI) constitute distinct yet related constructs. However, empirical validation of this hypothesis has largely relied on cross-sectional data, leaving gaps in understanding the co-developmental trajectories of these behaviors during adolescence, their microsystem predictors, and how identified trajectories are associated with mental health outcomes. This study thus aimed to: (a) identify the heterogeneous co-developmental trajectories of problematic social media use, short video use, and

Online Discussions About Alopecia Areata in 5 Arabian Gulf Countries: Social Media Listening Study.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease that can affect the quality of life of affected individuals. Publicly available online conversations and search behavior provide valuable insights into public awareness, understanding, and information related to AA. An infodemiology approach, therefore, offers an opportunity to characterize these perspectives across Gulf countries. This study evaluated the understanding and awareness of AA in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates based on AA-related mentions and internet searches. OBJECTIVE: Despite its prevalence,

Relying on the engagement of others: A review of the governance choices facing social media platform start-ups.

We are grateful to Professors Rebecca Reuber and Eileen Fischer for contributing our 2022 annual review article. This insightful review explores an issue of great contemporary importance regarding the relationship between entrepreneurial activities and social media platforms. Whilst there is much popular and media commentary regarding the opportunities such platforms offer for entrepreneurship, we lack informed, academic reflection upon the role and influence of such platforms for both good and ill. Hence, this review article is timely in identifying current practices and raising important iss

Online patient education: results of a content analysis of disempowering language in patient education materials about type 1 diabetes.

Global health organizations urge the use of empowering language in patient education for type 1 diabetes (T1D). Twenty-nine online patient education materials (PEMs) were assessed in the first phase of a content analysis examining how disempowering terminology is used in both frequency and context. All of the PEMs used disempowering terms, were primarily from the U.S. (70%), and authored by health care providers (34%). Imperative terms carried the highest word count (54%) and mean occurrence rates. Results suggest online PEMs may benefit from regular updates to improve health literacy, proving
