The case of an 8-year-old male child with severe kernicterus sequelae is presented in this paper. The child's hemoglobin value varied between 6.0 and 10.8 g/dL and his reticulocyte count ranged between 3.4 and 46.0% during the steady-state condition and hyperhemolytic crisis, respectively. A chronic hemolytic type of red cell G6PD deficiency was diagnosed. Cerastobin, a thrombinlike enzyme with arginine esterase activity, was purified from crude Cerastes vipera (Egyptian Sahara snake) venom. Unlike thrombinlike enzymes isolated from other snake venoms, cerastobin had a potent platelet aggregatory effect. The activation of human platelets was not related to adenosine diphosphate release and/or prostaglandin synthesis. Confluent cultures of dermal fibroblasts from patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) and healthy controls were investigated for the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) in response to a platelet release fraction (PRF) obtained by treatment of pooled platelets from normal individuals with adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP). Epistaxis has been controlled by the use of porcine strip packing in patients with thrombocytopenia prior to and with platelet transfusion. The present study has extended previous observations about the probable mode of action of porcine tissue, to show that the addition of an aqueous fraction (AF) of homogenized porcine tissue to platelets causes prompt aggregation in vitro. Animals subjected to maternal separation stress during the early stages of development display behavioural, endocrine and growth factor abnormalities that mirror the clinical findings in anxiety/depression.
