Environmental considerations in hepatitis E virus transmission: Is there a missing link?

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a zoonotic infection that varies according to genotype and geographical location. The full environmental and public health impact of hepatitis E remains uncertain. In this review, we aim to synthesise the evidence regarding HEV circulation in the environment. A literature search was conducted regarding HEV transmission and findings in environmental context, and this was synthesised to propose a hypothesis and identify gaps in our current understanding. Environmental spillover occurs due to increased interactions at the human-animal-environmental interface, with multi

Human and animal morbillivirus strains causing chronic neurological infections share key genotypic and phenotypic traits.

Long-term persistent measles virus (MeV) infection of the central nervous system (CNS) can result in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), an invariably fatal late neurological complication of measles. Analogous SSPE-like chronic diseases have also been reported in adult dogs, cetaceans, and more recently harbor seals following infection by canine distemper virus (CDV), dolphin morbillivirus (DMV), and phocine distemper virus (PDV), respectively. Here, we characterize different animal morbilliviruses (CDVlynx, PDV2001, PDV2014, and DMV232-18) that persisted in the CNS of their respective

Dissecting the Role of Natural Toxins and Anthropogenic Contaminants in Mixture Effects of Seawater Chemical Cocktails on Cetacean Skin Fibroblasts.

Marine mammal skin, in contact with seawater containing diverse chemicals, reflects species health and environmental quality. The contributions of natural toxins and anthropogenic contaminants to the effects of such chemical mixtures remain poorly quantified. Using skin fibroblast cells from the Indo-Pacific finless porpoise and humpback dolphin, we assessed the toxic potential of seawater extracts, focusing on cytotoxicity and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. Among the 38 studied chemicals prevalent in seawater, four algal toxins were 1-6 orders of magnitude more potent

Facial asymmetry in children with either unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis or positional posterior plagiocephaly.

BACKGROUND: In unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis (ULC), the posteriorly situated lambdoid suture of the cranial vault fuses prematurely. Positional posterior plagiocephaly (PPP) causes flattening of the posterior side of the head, either through external forces or through underlying differences in brain development. Both conditions cause occipital flattening of the head, but the aetiology is different. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight ULC children were compared with 16 sex- and age-matched PPP children. 3D computer tomography scans of all 24 children were analysed with Dolphin imaging software

Three-Dimensional Analysis of Craniofacial Structures of Individuals With Nonsyndromic Unilateral Complete Cleft Lip and Palate.

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is one of the most common congenital deformities. Primary surgeries at an early age result in scar formation, which may impede the growth of craniofacial structures of the maxilla. Orthodontist's role in the management of individuals with CLP is important and starts from the time of birth. The knowledge of craniofacial structures in individuals with a cleft is essential for treatment planning. The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare craniofacial structures of cleft and noncleft side of individuals with non-syndromic unilateral complete cleft lip and pala

Morphological analysis of three-dimensionally reconstructed frontal sinuses from Chinese Han population using computed tomography.

The uniqueness and reliability of frontal sinuses for personal identification have gained wide recognition in forensics. However, few studies have assessed the usefulness of a three-dimensional (3D) model of the frontal sinus for human identification. This study aimed to develop standardized techniques to classify the frontal sinus according to its 3D morphological metrics and discover the usefulness of the 3D frontal sinus model in identification of Chinese Han population. One hundred and ninety-six computed tomography (CT) scans of patients older than 20 years (84 males and 112 females) were

Genes Encoding Mammalian Oviductal Proteins Involved in Fertilization are Subjected to Gene Death and Positive Selection.

Oviductal proteins play an important role in mammalian fertilization, as proteins from seminal fluid. However, in contrast with the latter, their phylogenetic evolution has been poorly studied. Our objective was to study in 16 mammals the evolution of 16 genes that encode oviductal proteins involved in at least one of the following steps: (1) sperm-oviduct interaction, (2) acrosome reaction, and/or (3) sperm-zona pellucida interaction. Most genes were present in all studied mammals. However, some genes were lost along the evolution of mammals and found as pseudogenes: annexin A5 (ANXA5) and de
