Eighty-one cases of mechanical small bowel obstruction were seen at our hospital in the three year period 1978 to 1980. Four (5%) were due to gallstone ileus, three of them in women. All four patients were more than 75 years of age. Because most patients with biliary-enteric fistulas and gallstone ileus are elderly and in poor general condition, simple removal of the obstruction gallstone is usually adequate, but interval cholecystectomy is recommended in patients with a long life expectancy, because recurrence of calculi and symptoms increases with time.

Duodenoscopic sphincterotomy was attempted in 71 elderly patients with gallbladders who presented with acute symptoms caused by common bile duct stones. Sphincterotomy was possible in all but one patient, and duct clearance was achieved in 61 (86%); failures were usually due to the size of the stones. Two patients required blood transfusions for immediate bleeding, and two underwent cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis developing within 7 days of sphincterotomy. 43 patients had 51 endoscopic sphincterotomies within 4 years; there were 2 complications, 7 patients had to have surgery in spite of endoscopic sphincterotomy. Stones, which had been left unnoticed in the choledochus during surgery could be removed in all cases endoscopically. BACKGROUND: Primary aortoenteric communications are a rare and severe complication of abdominal aortic aneurysms or erosions by neoplastic diseases. Early diagnosis and surgical treatment are crucial. Postoperative morbidity and mortality are high. BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported large increases in the incidence of eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE) in the last 20 years. We aimed to systematically review the incidence and prevalence of EoE, focused on all European countries.

AIMS: Duodenal Mucosal Resurfacing (DMR) is an endoscopic ablation technique aimed at improving glycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
