The influence of cotton dust inhalation on pulmonary leukocyte recruitment has been examined in rats and guinea pigs in an attempt to develop an animal model which can be used to assess the relative pulmonary toxicity of dusts from various varieties of cotton. Sand and Dust Storms (SDS) pose considerable health risks worldwide. Previous studies only indicated risk of SDS on overall mortality. This nationwide multicenter time-series study aimed to examine SDS-associated mortality risks extensively. OBJECTIVE: This study used the Sniffin' Sticks test battery to evaluate olfactory function in employees of a bakery exposed to flour dust.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study enrolled 43 individuals with exposure (i.e., to flour) plus 41 healthy volunteers as controls. Olfactory function was assessed in these subjects through the use of the Sniffin' Sticks test battery. The overall score was calculated by adding up the scores for each of the 12 separate odors. A score of 6 or less was deemed anosmia, from 7 to 10 hyposmia, and a score of 11 or 12 was taken to indicate no impairment of olfaction.

HIGHLIGHTS: On-farm samples were used to analyze farmers' exposure to dust while cleaning and unloading their grain bins. Over 18% of samples exceeded the 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA) concentration recommended by ACGIH for respirable dust, and over 27% of samples exceeded the ACGIH recommendation for total suspended particles. The results strengthen the need for relevant agricultural safety education programs to help farm workers understand the health hazards associated with grain dust.
