Behçet's disease may also insolve the inner ear. We report on a 24-year-old man having suffered from defective hearing already since two years after onset of Behçet's disease. During the follow-up period, vertiginous attacks, tinnitus, as well as feeling of pressure in both ears have been additionally observed.

Ear, nose and throat diseases in children living in the Kimberley region of Western Australia have been systematically studied over the last 15 years. A "diagnostic triad" is described; this offers a comprehensive approach to the assessment of middle-ear disease. The aetiology of chronic ear disease in Aboriginal children has been investigated. Management problems of deafness are discussed.

By means of groups of one hundred patients undergoing middle ear microsurgery, we compared two hypotensive anesthesia techniques combining halothane, a non-depolarising myorelaxant and a beta adrenoreceptor blocking agent. Ten of 16 patients with Behçet's disease complained of hearing disturbances (62%), and six of them had vertigo (37%). Detailed audiologic and vestibular examinations revealed both cochlear and vestibular abnormalities in those patients. The labyrinth involvement may be ascribed to vasculitis, which is the basic pathologic lesion in Behçet's disease. This inner ear involvement is a late complication of this disease, appearing almost a decade after the initial manifestations.

Audiologic and electroacoustic immittance measurements were obtained from each ear of 23 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 13 normal control subjects. Audiologic findings revealed 14 patients with rheumatoid arthritis with hearing loss of either conductive (three patients) or sensorineural (11 patients) type, while only two control subjects demonstrated hearing loss, both of sensorineural type. The aging ear is a particularly vexing problem. This review of the literature covers much of the pertinent information and leads to some suggested research which we hope to pursue. It seems to us that research directed toward increased knowledge of the auditory blood supply and a better understanding of the function of the stria vascularis will add much to our understanding of the aging ear.

Two successful cases of replantation of part of an ear are presented; both were done by simple suture. The larger of these replants consisted of a 13 x 43 mm segment of the superior helix and concha. Both were vascularized beofre 48 hours. The greatest problem was venous congestion. In the larger replant we made multiple puncture wounds daily on both sides of the graft with an 18-gauge needle to help relieve this.

A 52-year-old man with agnogenic myeloid metaplasia had a sudden onset of pain and bleeding from the left ear and an associated decrease in hearing acuity on that side. Examination revealed a friable mass that filled the middle ear and protruded through a perforated tympanic membrane. Special staining of a tissue specimen of the mass revealed myeloid metaplasia. Otorhinolaryngologists should be aware of the fact that the ear can be involved in hematopoietic disorders.

External otitis is directly related to patient habit patterns. It is easily treated, but the habits must be changed to effect permanent cure. Serous otitis media is the most common cause of conductive hearing loss, and its presence my predispose to development of purulent otitis media. Removal of middle ear fluid may be advisable in persistent serous otitis and is recommended in acute purulent otitis.

A slow intracarotid infusion of hypertonic sodium chloride solution, 350 mEq/L, and potassium chloride, 5 mEq/L, was used to increase serum sodium chloride over a 90-minute period in 85 cats. A slow, steady rise in serum sodium occurred, which reached almost 208 mEq/L at the end of 90 minutes. A concomitant rise in sodium occurred in the cerebrospinal fluid and perilymph. Mucosal biopsy specimens were taken from the middle ear in 19 patients with otosclerosis and stained by Alcan blue and PAS. They were also stained for hydrolytic and oxidative enzymes. In additon, 11 temporal bones from patients without any previous ear disease were serially sectioned for mucopolysaccharides.
