Use of Filters for Residency Application Review: Results From the Internal Medicine In-Training Examination Program Director Survey.

BACKGROUND: The increase in applications to residency programs, known as "application inflation," creates challenges for program directors (PDs). Prior studies have shown that internal medicine (IM) PDs utilize criteria, such as United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step examination performance, when reviewing applications. However, little is known about how early these filters are utilized in the application review cycle. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to assess the frequency and types of filters utilized by IM PDs during initial residency application screening and prior to more

Two definitions of waiting well.

Waiting for uncertain news is often distressing, at times even more distressing than facing bad news. The goal of this article was to investigate strategies for "waiting well" during these periods of uncertainty. Specifically, we propose 2 definitions of waiting well. First, people can wait in such a way as to ease their distress during the waiting period. Second, people could wait in such a way as to ease the pain of bad news or enhance the thrill of good news. We conducted a longitudinal study of law graduates (N = 230) awaiting their result on the California bar exam. Participants completed

Advanced practice: a model for neonatal/perinatal and women/child nursing.

Collaboration between service and academia has often been disparate. A new model of cooperation was designed in the Fall of 1992 by faculty at the University of Connecticut School of Nursing and nurse administrators at John Dempsey Hospital of the University of Connecticut Health Center. A combined effort was undertaken to expeditiously prepare, at the graduate level, acute care nurse practitioners in Critical Care and Neonatal/Perinatal Nursing. The impetus for the collaborative effort was due in part to: reduced medical residency hours for patient coverage; limited access by patients to care

Quality in undergraduate nursing programmes: the role of Nursing Council.

This paper looks broadly at issues to do with quality monitoring in higher education and considers the role and focus of the Nursing Council of New Zealand in the approval of and ongoing monitoring of undergraduate nursing degree programmes. It is suggested that the approach taken by the Nursing Council is accountability-led where minimal attention is given to teaching and learning and actual graduate outcomes. This may lead to a mistaken belief that Nursing Council's monitoring focuses on quality or that the outcomes of their monitoring might contribute to programme enhancement. A shift to em

Development of a Validated Survey to Assess Virtual Interprofessional Education: Cross-Sectional Survey Study With Psychometric Validation.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic led to the rapid integration of telemedicine into health care delivery. As a result, the ability to effectively collaborate in interprofessional virtual teams became a necessity, as did the development of educational opportunities designed to equip health care students with these skills. Currently, there is a lack of dedicated tools to assess learners' ability and readiness to function as a well-coordinated virtual medical team. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to conduct a psychometric assessment and validation of measures evaluating gradua

Subjective cognitive decline and objective cognitive performance across diverse intersectional identities by gender, race/ethnicity, and educational attainment.

Subjective cognitive decline and subtle objective cognitive impairment are important early clinical stages of dementia, but the extent to which they vary across intersectional identities remains poorly understood. We examined differences in subjective and objective cognition across intersectional identities defined by gender, race/ethnicity, and education. We analyzed 20,814 participants aged 45+ from the Brain Health Registry. Subjective cognition was measured using the 39-item Everyday Cognition Scale. Objective cognition was measured using the Cambridge Cognition Paired Associates Learning

Nursing education for emerging psychedelic-assisted therapy: A role-calibrated curriculum approach.

THE CONTEMPORARY ISSUE: Clinical and regulatory interest in psychedelic-assisted therapy has created an educational challenge for nursing. Nurses may encounter people receiving treatment in research, regulated services, ketamine-related care or unregulated settings, yet curricula were not designed for the pharmacological, relational, ethical and governance questions involved. WHY IT MATTERS FOR NURSING EDUCATION: The supporting clinical evidence is promising but contested, and the substances grouped under the broad psychedelic label differ in mechanism, legal status and monitoring requirement

Modern teaching for clinical education involving manual therapy: a 6-pillar approach.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions remain a leading source of global disability, and manual therapy (MT) features in multimodal guideline concordant care; however, teaching in clinical programs that involve MT often remains technique-centric and insufficiently aligned with contemporary, person-centred teaching and practice. The present paper synthesizes literature and recent professional discourse to advance an educational framework that operationalizes modern clinical teaching across professions. The contribution of Caribbean medical schools to the U.S. physician workforce.

PURPOSE: The physician shortfall in the U.S. has given rise to increasing reliance on international medical school graduates (IMGs), including those graduating from what are referred to as off-shore Caribbean medical schools. These schools, which offer instruction in English, draw primarily on U.S. and Canadian citizens while affording students clinical training opportunities in the U.S. The purpose of the present study was to characterize the magnitude and nature of the contribution being made by Caribbean medical schools to the U.S. physician workforce. METHOD: Off-shore Caribbean medical s

Research Priorities for Intensive Care Nursing: A Focus Group and Three-Round Delphi Consensus Study.

Research priorities for intensive care nursing have been set internationally but not in Japan. We aimed to identify national priorities and compare them with those reported elsewhere. Focus group interviews with 10 expert intensive care unit (ICU) nurses generated 65 categories, which 50 nurses rated over three modified Delphi rounds (consensus, median ≥ 70, then ≥ 80). Categories were restructured into 20 topics; 16 reached consensus. Five independent nursing researchers who had taken no part in the interviews or the Delphi rounds then appraised every topic for validity, applicability, utilit

"I Learned as I Went": an online distance education case study.

Interactions between deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students and instructors in online distance education (ODE) increased exponentially during the COVID pandemic. To understand this phenomena, we conducted a comprehensive literature review about evolving ODE formats customized for deaf student's needs. This literature shows increasing multimodal, multilingual, and interactive features. Next, we examined empirical data from a collective case study implemented to better understand ODE phenomena from the perspectives of DHH students and faculty in higher education. We used 4 data collection strat

Creative IDEA: Introducing a Statewide Art Therapy in Prisons Program.

Education is regarded as an avenue for success while the under-educated are disproportionately more likely to be incarcerated and remain within the correctional system. Current prison reforms have focused on increasing access to educational programming. However, these programs are not designed to address the lack of control, poor self-regulation, low emotional intelligence, inadequate social skills, or lack of internal motivation that hinder progress. Art therapy has been found effective in mitigating these impediments. Recognizing this, a partnership arose between a state Department of Correc

Teaching Telemedicine: The Next Frontier for Medical Educators.

The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed telemedicine to the forefront of health care delivery, and for many clinicians, virtual visits are the new normal. Although telemedicine has allowed clinicians to safely care for patients from a distance during the current pandemic, its rapid adoption has outpaced clinician training and development of best practices. Additionally, telemedicine has pulled trainees into a new virtual education environment that finds them oftentimes physically separated from their preceptors. Medical educators are challenged with figuring out how to integrate learners into virtual

A Systematic Reflection on the Challenges in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Education and Careers in the United States.

The relationship between education in acupuncture and Chinese medicine (ACM) and its professional practice can be conceptualized as an integ … ess, as well as chaotic business models and imbalanced pricing structures. The chain connecting ACM education, graduate employment, and societal utilization is now caught in a state of systemic imbalance. The root problem lies not in any single point of failure but in a structural breakdown. Addressing this challenge will require coordinated, multidimensional reforms …
