Patient education in the hospital setting.

S.G. Rosenberg outlines three types of problems which occur in the care of the chronically ill. The first of these is clinical failure which occurs with an unavoidable exacerbation of the illness. Second is medical failure which occurs when technology cannot provide a cure. And third is an education failure when the patient will not follow the prescribed regime. This can result from either a choice made by the patient or family not to comply, or from a lack of knowledge on the part of the patient, or the lack of a planned education approach as part of the patient's care. Compliance is often su

Policy as soft deterrence: Impact of recent policy changes on international students in Australia.

Since 2021, Australia's international education and migration policies have undergone significant changes. However, a critical gap remains in understanding how these policy shifts are experienced, interpreted, and evaluated by international students themselves. Drawing on in-depth interviews with Chinese, Indian and Vietnamese international students, this article examines how these cohorts make sense of and navigate the evolving landscape of Australia's international education policies. It unpacks their experiences of administrative delays, visa insecurity and escalating visa fees, constrained

[Cesarean sections as a biopolitical expression of birth: The case of Neuquén province, Argentina].

Cesarean sections continue to increase globally regardless of international recommendations and evidence of their risks when not medically indicated. This study characterizes the time-trend of birth indicators in the province of Neuquén, Argentina, through the perspective of the biopolitics of birth, which understands the cesarean section not merely as a surgical technique, but as a complex device, a biopolitical technology that acts simultaneously on multiple levels. A time-trend analysis was conducted using provincial administrative records, reconstructing indicators of birth rate, infant mo

Virtual Reality in Ophthalmic Surgical Education: Current Innovations and Future Perspectives.

Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies have recently gained momentum in medical education and show particular promise for ophthalmic surgical training. VR creates immersive, computer-generated environments for simulated learning, whereas AR enhances the real-world by superimposing interactive digital elements. Traditional microsurgical training relies on wet-lab practice using model or cadaver eyes, as well as operative experience on live patients. The educational value of wet-lab training often depends on time-intensive direct supervision by a senior surgeon, while early

Simultaneous optimization of film morphology and structure dimensionality in Cs3Sb2I9 through butylamine gas treatment.

Food safety is a critical public health issue worldwide as the consumption of unhygienic food causes millions of illnesses annually. The contaminated food is primarily unsafe due to the presence of microorganisms (i.e. bacteria and viruses), chemicals (i.e. pesticides and heavy metals), and physical hazards (i.e. glass, metal and plastic). Foodborne illnesses such as salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis, listeriosis, E. coli infection, botulism, cholera, norovirus infection, and others are commonly caused by the problems associated with food hygiene. From the modest beginnings rooted in basic hyg

Clinical utility of digital technologies in Parkinson's disease.

Digital health technologies (DHTs) are on the verge of changing treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). This narrative overview article describes DHTs that are already used or in development, focusing on technologies available in Germany and on their clinical utility. Examples include applications that are primarily used by patients, i.e., tools for patient education and empowerment, but also stand-alone interventions improving clinical outcomes including motor and non-motor symptoms. In Germany, these patient-centered DHTs fall under the HTA framework of digital health applications (DIGA). DHT

The Modern Role of Neonatal PICCs Subspecialty.

This perspective review examines the evolving role of neonatal peripherally inserted central catheters (n-PICCs) as a distinct subspecialty within neonatal vascular access. n-PICCs are indispensable for delivering long-term intravenous therapies in critically ill neonates. The review explores ethical considerations, equitable access to vascular access technologies and prioritisation of patient safety in procedural training. The implementation of specialised vascular access teams, rather than an all-staff model, is advocated to enhance procedural success, reduce device-related complications and
