Brain-implanted conductors amplify radiofrequency fields in rodents: Advantages and risks.

Over the past few decades, daily exposure to radiofrequency (RF) fields has been increasing due to the rapid development of wireless and medical imaging technologies. Under extreme circumstances, exposure to very strong RF energy can lead to heating of body tissue, even resulting in tissue injury. The presence of implanted devices, moreover, can amplify RF effects on surrounding tissue. Therefore, it is important to understand the interactions of RF fields with tissue in the presence of implants, in order to establish appropriate wireless safety protocols, and also to extend the benefits of me

German Sonderwege in Postwar Brain Research: Institutional Strategies for Reinventing Behavioral Research After Nazism.

This article explores how scientists positioned brain research in postwar Germany. Detlev Ploog imported technology-brain stimulation with implanted electrodes-to help reclaim the Max-Planck-Institute for Psychiatry's international stature, providing a neurophysiological basis for biological psychiatry and making biological research foundational for philosophical anthropology. Bernhard Hassenstein and Werner Reichardt, by contrast, kept such philosophical prospects at bay. They did not engage the rhetoric of information typical for the propagation of cybernetics as universal science. Instead,

Assessment of the functional effect of the intracarotid sodium amobarbital procedure using co-registered MRI/HMPAO-SPECT and SEEG.

We studied the functional effect of injection of sodium amobarbital (SA) in 10 patients with intractable epilepsy. During the intracarotid amobarbital procedure, we measured delta activity in EEG recording from implanted electrodes and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) using HMPAO-SPECT co-registered with MRI. SA injection resulted in an increase in delta activity and a decrease in rCBF in all areas examined. Direct functional changes were observed in structures perfused by the carotid artery injected. In addition, we observed indirect effects, probably owing to deafferentation of neuronal p

Effect of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide on porcine gastrointestinal electrical activity.

The influence of intravenous infusion of VIP, 150 and 300 pmol/kg/min, on gastrointestinal electrical activity was studied in conscious piglets with electrodes implanted in the wall of the antrum pylori, duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Both doses resulted in a decrease in antral electrical activity. In the small intestine, only the lower dose caused a shortening of the irregular spiking activity phase in the jejunum and ileum. In the jejunum this resulted in a reduction of the MMC interval. It may be concluded that the prevailing effect of VIP is an inhibition of gastrointestinal electrical acti

Temporal bone histopathology of a patient with a nucleus 22-channel cochlear implant.

The temporal bone histopathology of a patient with profound sensorineural hearing loss attributable to cochlear otosclerosis is presented. The patient had a Nucleus 22-channel cochlear prosthesis implanted in the right ear prior to his demise. Unintentional scala media insertion of the electrode array resulted from labyrinthitis ossificans obliteration of the scala tympani. Inadvertent facial nerve stimulation necessitated program exclusion of electrodes 11 to 16 located in proximity to the labyrinthine and geniculate segments of the facial nerve. The patient received significant benefit from

[Implanting an atrial pacemaker].

Twelve single chamber atrial demand (AAI) pacemakers have been implanted for the control of the symptomatic sick sinus syndrome and hypersensitive carotis sinus syndrome at the Postgraduate Medical University during the last year. The patient selection was based upon the long-term monitoring and the electrophysiological studies. In the presence of the intact atrioventricular conduction the "pysiological" pacing has been maintained using "J" shaped endocavital atrial electrodes being connected with simple or multiprogrammable generators. Late AV block was not observed. Authors propose the sprea

[Measurement of the transmucosal biopotential differential via a fiber endoscope as a means of diagnosing the spread of malignant stomach neoplasms into the serous membrane].

A new time-saving procedure of preoperative diagnosis of involvement of serosa and adjacent organs in gastric cancer is discussed. It is based on the comparison of electric potentials across tumor (A) and normal gastric mucosa (B) measured by means of fibroendoscope. Coefficient K which is an A/B ratio was obtained. Statistically significant differences in coefficient K were established in 86 cases with and without involvement of serosa. Difference of electric potentials across gastric mucosa was measured by a newly-developed device which includes platinum electrodes. The null electrode was im

BACKGROUND AND EVOKED ACTIVITY IN THE AUDITORY PATHWAY: EFFECTS OF NOISE-SHOCK PAIRING.

Unanesthetized cats with electrodes permanently implanted along the auditory pathway were presented first with suistained " white" noise stimuli and then with the same noise paired with subcutaneous electric shocks. Pairing noise with shock decreased both background and noise-evoked activity inthe inferior colliculus, and, in some cats, also in the cochlear nucleus, trapezoid body, and at the round window. No changes occurred in medial geniculate or auditory cortex recordings. The effects in the inferior colliculusdo not depend on changes in the degree of arousal of the animal, on change in th

Acute in vivo Recording with a Generic Parylene Microelectrode Array Implanted with Dip-coating Method into the Rat Brain.

Flexible polymer-based microelectrode arrays (MEAs) can reduce tissue inflammation and foreign body response and greatly prolong the lifetime of neural implants. However, standard and customized polymer devices are only accessible to limited groups. To better promote the development and application of polymer MEAs, we have launched the Polymer Implantable Electrode (PIE) Foundry and developed a 64-channel Parylene C-based MEA with generic electrodes layout that can be used to record from both cortical and sub-cortical regions in rodents. In addition, a practical dip-coating protocol for the in

Wireless fast-scan cyclic voltammetry to monitor adenosine in patients with essential tremor during deep brain stimulation.

Essential tremor is often markedly reduced during deep brain stimulation simply by implanting the stimulating electrode before activating neurostimulation. Referred to as the microthalamotomy effect, the mechanisms of this unexpected consequence are thought to be related to microlesioning targeted brain tissue, that is, a microscopic version of tissue ablation in thalamotomy. An alternate possibility is that implanting the electrode induces immediate neurochemical release. Herein, we report the experiment performing with real-time fast-scan cyclic voltammetry to quantify neurotransmitter conce

Epineural stimulation on distal brachial plexus for functional restoration of the upper limb in a primate study.

Restoring upper limb function is critical in individuals with central paralysis, and hand control is a priority in patients with neurological impairments. Functional electrical stimulation with implantable electrodes targeting the peripheral nervous system has the potential to selectively recruit hand muscles and generate multiple functional hand movements. However, the implantation of electrodes in the forearm or elbow areas requires multiple incisions for surgery, and elbow joint movements cannot be performed. In this study, we designed and implanted two epineural cuffs on the median and rad

Retrosigmoid approach for auditory brainstem implant.

The present paper reports our experience with the surgical retrosigmoid-transmastoid (RS-TM) technique for implanting auditory brainstem implants (ABIs). From April 1997 to August 1998, four patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) were operated on for vestibular schwannoma removal with ABI implantation. The subjects (three men and one women) ranged in age from 22 to 31 years. Tumour size ranged from 12 to 30 mm. A classical RS-TM approach was performed. After tumour excision, identification of landmarks (VIIth, VIIIth and IXth cranial nerves, choroid plexus) to the foramen of Luschka was

Investigation of implantable signal transmission characteristics based on visible data of the human leg.

BACKGROUND: Signal transmission characteristics between implanted medical devices and external equipment has been a common key issue, as has the problem of supplying energy to the devices. It can be used to enable signal transmission from implanted devices that the human body's conductive properties. Using signal transmission by galvanic coupling is one of the most effective signal transmission methods. METHODS: The signal transmission characteristics by galvanic coupling of implantable devices using a frequency range of 10 kHz to 1 MHz was analyzed in this article. A finite element (FEM) mod

Dynamic changes in the structure and function of brain mural cells around chronically implanted microelectrodes.

Integration of neural interfaces with minimal tissue disruption in the brain is ideal to develop robust tools that can address essential neuroscience questions and combat neurological disorders. However, implantation of intracortical devices provokes severe tissue inflammation within the brain, which requires a high metabolic demand to support a complex series of cellular events mediating tissue degeneration and wound healing. Pericytes, peri-vascular cells involved in blood-brain barrier maintenance, vascular permeability, waste clearance, and angiogenesis, have recently been implicated as po

The Long-Term Stability of Intracortical Microstimulation and the Foreign Body Response Are Layer Dependent.

Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of the somatosensory cortex (S1) can restore sensory function in patients with paralysis. Studies assessing the stability of ICMS have reported heterogeneous responses across electrodes and over time, potentially hindering the implementation and translatability of these technologies. The foreign body response (FBR) and the encapsulating glial scar have been associated with a decay in chronic performance of implanted electrodes. Moreover, the morphology, intrinsic properties, and function of cells vary across cortical layers, each potentially affecting the

Pathologic findings related to the lead system and repeated defibrillations in patients with the automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator.

The purpose of the present study was to examine at autopsy the effect of multiple defibrillations on the myocardium and the pathologic consequences of short- and long-term placement of the intravascular and interpericardial leads of the automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. Twenty-five patients were examined at autopsy; 8 of them underwent lead implantation only and 17 received both leads and the automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. Twelve patients (48%) died of ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation; seven (28%) died of other causes. Acute pericarditis oc

Cuff Electrode Impacts on Vagus Nerve Stimulation Threshold Under MR Gradient Coil Emission.

In this research, we investigate the impact of implantable cuff electrodes on the vagus nerve stimulation threshold due to the gradient fields during MR scans. We employ electromagnetic simulations in conjunction with the NEURON model for our study. Preliminary findings suggest that the cuff electrodes can substantially reduce the stimulation threshold for the specific configuration examined in this research.

Forward-masking patterns produced by symmetric and asymmetric pulse shapes in electric hearing.

Two forward-masking experiments were conducted with six cochlear implant listeners to test whether asymmetric pulse shapes would improve the place-specificity of stimulation compared to symmetric ones. The maskers were either cathodic-first symmetric biphasic, pseudomonophasic (i.e., with a second anodic phase longer and lower in amplitude than the first phase), or "delayed pseudomonophasic" (identical to pseudomonophasic but with an inter-phase gap) stimuli. In experiment 1, forward-masking patterns for monopolar maskers were obtained by keeping each masker fixed on a middle electrode of the

Novel Injectable Nerve Stimulation Electrode Placed on the Dorsal Root Ganglion Using an Extravertebral Approach: A Feasibility Study in Cadavers.

BACKGROUND: Dorsal root ganglion stimulation (DRGS) is an established method for treating persistent and severe pain conditions. However, performing DRGS has significant challenges. Current DRGS systems are expensive, hindering accessibility for many patients and health care systems. Additionally, placing DRGS devices requires specialized training in epidural techniques and lead anchoring methods. Technical and financial requirements also limit the clinical applicability and availability of DRGS. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the feasibility of a new method for rapidly delivering near- DRG
