Investigating the role of urinary electrolyte parameters in the differential diagnosis of hypokalemia.

BACKGROUND: Hypokalemia is a common clinical electrolyte disorder. In normotensive patients with renal potassium (K+) wasting, distinguishin … ers were systematically collected. The spot urine K+/creatinine (Cr) ratio, fractional excretion of electrolytes (FEK, FENa, FECl), and blood/urine Na+/Cl- ratios were calculated. Between-group comparisons and ROC curve analysis were performed. RESULTS: Compared with the RTD group, the UGI group had a significantly higher female proportion, lower BMI, shorter …

Electrolyte Imbalances and Metabolic Emergencies in Obesity: Mechanisms and Clinical Implications.

Electrolyte imbalances are a frequently overlooked yet critical component of obesity-related metabolic dysfunction, contributing to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney impairment, and metabolic emergencies such as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS), and acute kidney injury (AKI). These disturbances arise from insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, hormonal dysregulation, and renal dysfunction, leading to sodium retention, potassium depletion, and deficiencies in calcium and magnesium homeostasis. Managing electrolyte imbalances is essential i

Realization of Long-Life Proton Battery by Layer Intercalatable Electrolyte.

Proton batteries have attracted increasing interests because of their potential for grid-scale energy storage with high safety and great low-temperature performances. However, their development is significantly retarded by electrolyte design due to free water corrosion. Herein, we report a layer intercalatable electrolyte (LIE) by introducing trimethyl phosphate (TMP) into traditional acidic electrolyte. Different from conventional role in batteries, the presence of TMP intriguingly achieves co-intercalation of solvent molecules into the interlayer of anode materials, enabling a new working me

Use of electrolyte leakage to assess floral damage after freezing.

PREMISE: With growing interest in the impact of false springs on plant reproduction, there is the need to develop reliable, high-throughput methods for assessing floral freezing damage. Here we present a method for use with floral tissue that will facilitate more comparative work on floral freezing tolerance in the future. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined the effectiveness of a modified electrolyte leakage protocol to assess floral freezing damage. By comparing data from temperature response curves to an estimate of visual tissue damage, we optimized the protocol for different floral types an

Effect of monovalent electrolyte solutions on the human tear ferning pattern.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of the addition of a low concentration of sodium chloride (NaCl) and potassium chloride (KCl) solutions on the tear ferning (TF) patterns of tears collected from humans. METHODS: A tear sample (20 μL) was collected from the right eye of 23 males and 7 females (25.4 ± 6.6 years). The tears were collected in one sitting for healthy subjects (N = 13). For dry eye participants (N = 17), the tear samples were collected in two separate settings with five minutes gap in between. A sample (1 μL) from each tear was dried on a glass slide, and the obtained ferns were

Fluid and electrolyte management in the neonate and what can go wrong.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review highlights recent advances in understanding fluid and electrolyte homeostasis during the newborn period, including heightened recognition of fluid overload and acute kidney injury contributing to poor clinical outcomes. Particular attention is given towards the care of extremely preterm infants. RECENT FINDINGS: Emerging data demonstrate (i) disproportionally large transepidermal water loss in the extremely preterm population, (ii) the relationship between postnatal weight loss (negative fluid balance) and improved outcomes, (iii) the frequency and negative effe

Electrolyte Imbalance in Anti-LGI1 Encephalitis: It Is Not All in Your Head.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Antileucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (anti-LGI1) autoimmune encephalitis was first described in 2010 and is today the most common type of limbic encephalitis. During the course of the disease, 60%-88% of the patients develop hyponatremia. The etiology of the sodium disorder is unclear, often presumed to be the result of the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH). Other electrolyte abnormalities have not been reported in association with anti-LGI1 antibody encephalitis. Due to the presence of hypomagnesemia and hypophosphatemia in our patien

A physiological approach to fluid and electrolyte management of the preterm infant: Review.

Despite the fact that hundreds of thousands of preterm infants receive parenteral fluids each year, study of optimal fluid and electrolyte management in this population is limited. Compared to older children and adults, preterm infants have an impaired capacity to regulate water and electrolyte balance. Appropriate fluid and electrolyte management is critical for optimal care of low birth weight or sick infants, as fluid overload and electrolyte abnormalities pose significant morbidity. This review highlights basic physiological principles which need to be applied when prescribing parenteral f

Investigation on the Copolymer Electrolyte of Poly(1,3-dioxolane-co-formaldehyde).

A series of copolymers are prepared via cationic ring-opening polymerization with 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) and trioxymethylene (TOM) as monomers. The crystallization behaviors of the copolymers can be suppressed by adjusting the ratio of DOL/TOM. With LiBF4 as a source for a BF3 initiator, copolymer electrolytes (CPEs) can be prepared in situ inside cells without needing nonelectrolyte catalysts or initiators. The ionic conductivities and Li+ diffusion coefficients ( D Li + ) of the CPEs increase with a decreasing DOL/TOM ratio in a certain range. The CPE with a DOL/TOM ratio of 8/2 has the h…

Early urine electrolyte patterns in patients with acute heart failure.

AIMS: We conducted a prospective study of emergency department (ED) patients with acute heart failure (AHF) to determine if worsening HF (WHF) could be predicted based on urinary electrolytes during the first 1-2 h of ED care. Loop diuretics are standard therapy for AHF patients. A subset of patients hospitalized for AHF will develop a blunted natriuretic response to loop diuretics, termed diuretic resistance, which often leads to WHF. Early detection of diuretic resistance could facilitate escalation of therapy and prevention of WHF. METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients were eligible if they had an…

Cisplatin induced arrhythmia; electrolyte imbalance or disturbance of the SA node?

Since its approval in 1979 cisplatin has become one of the most extensively used chemotherapeutics in the clinic and although cell resistance and toxicity hinder its efficacy it continues to be a gold standard regimen. Cisplatin's side effects primarily include nephrotoxicity, gastrointestinal toxicity, neurotoxicity and ototoxicity. Cardiotoxicity is generally not defined as a side effect of cisplatin. However, over the past decade there has been a surge in the amount of clinical cases reporting a vast array of cardio-toxic events occurring during or shortly after cisplatin infusion, these ra

Metabolic and electrolyte disturbance after cardiac arrest: How to deal with it.

Cardiac arrest (CA) is a sudden, severe event that causes a cascade of metabolic and electrolyte disturbances throughout the body triggered by a loss of cardiac output. Metabolic disturbances are primarily in the form of mixed metabolic and respiratory acidosis; dysglycaemia; and states of deficiency or excess in potassium, calcium, magnesium and lactate. It is known that persistent metabolic disturbances are associated with poor patient outcome following resuscitation from CA, but this might simply be a reflection of the severity of illness. Moreover, contemporary evidence for the management

Regulation of electrolyte and fluid metabolism in multi-stage ultra-marathoners.

The purposes of this study were (i) to determine the prevalence of exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH) in multi-stage ultra-marathoners and (ii) to gain more insight into fluid and electrolyte regulation during a multi-stage race. Body mass, sodium concentration ([Na⁺]), potassium concentration ([K⁺]), creatinine, urea, specific gravity, and osmolality in urine were measured in 25 male ultra-marathoners in the 'Swiss Jura Marathon' 2008 with 11,000 m gain of altitude over 7 stages covering 350 km, before and after each stage. Haemoglobin, haematocrit, creatinine, urea, [Na⁺], [K⁺], and osmo

Electrolyte disturbances and acute kidney injury induced by imatinib therapy.

Imatinib mesylate is an anticancer agent that selectively inhibits protein kinases involved in the pathophysiology of cancer. It is now the first-line therapy for patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) and is generally well tolerated. Here, we describe a case of a patient receiving imatinib for CML. The patient developed renal failure accompanied by severe hypophosphataemia, hypokalaemia and hypomagnesaemia. We discuss the pathophysiological characteristics of imatinib-induced renal injury, and we demonstrate that these electrolyte disturbances were caused by increased urinary excretion

Electrolytic methanogenic-methanotrophic coupling for tetrachloroethylene bioremediation: proof of concept.

Coupling of methanogenic and methanotrophic catabolisms was performed in a single-stage technology equipped with a water electrolysis cell placed in the effluent recirculation loop. The electrolysis-generated hydrogen served as an electron donor for both bicarbonate reduction into CH4 and reductive dechlorination, while the O2 and CH4, supported the cometabolic oxidation of chlorinated intermediates left over by the tetrachloroethylene (PCE) transformation. The electrolytical methanogenic/methanotrophic coupled (eMaMoC) process was tested in a laboratory-scale setup at PCE loads ranging from 5
