Changes in the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) during space flight have been suspected of contributing to space motion sickness. The horizontal VOR was studied in nine subjects on two space shuttle missions. Active unpaced head oscillation at 0.3 Hz was used as the stimulus to examine the gain and phase of the VOR with and without visual input, as well as the visual suppression of the reflex. Fatal familial insomnia (FFI) is a rare inherited prion disease characterized by sleep, autonomic, and motor disturbances. Neuro-ophthalmological abnormalities have been reported at the onset of disease, although not further characterized. We analyzed video recordings of eye movements of 6 patients with FFI from 3 unrelated kindreds, seen within 6 months from the onset of illness. BACKGROUND: Adult vitelliform macular dystrophy (AVMD) was first described in 1974 (Gass) but is still often misdiagnosed. Large studies using modern morphological and functional diagnostic methods do not exist.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The records of 67 consecutive AVMD patients (1994-2003) were reviewed regarding color vision, perimetry, RPE autofluorescence, fluorescein angiography, EOG, ERG, and mfERG.
RESULTS: The mean age was 54.8 years. Symptoms, visual loss, color vision deficits, and visual field defects were highly variable. Autofluorescence was increased centrally in 77% of the eyes.

Periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) and restless legs syndrome (RLS) are related sleep disorders that occur with increased frequency in spinal cord disease. Effective treatment may be obtained with dopaminergic or opioid drugs, while anticonvulsants, benzodiazepines, and possibly baclofen may be helpful. This report describes a patient who developed RLS and PLMD after acute transverse myelitis associated with infectious mononucleosis, and failed to respond to intrathecal baclofen. All symptoms of RLS/PLMD resolved after treatment with pergolide.
