Flexible minds, better decisions: a cross-sectional study on cognitive and emotional correlates of decision-making in law school.

BACKGROUND: Although decision-making styles (DMSs) are fundamentally complex, multidimensional, and contextual phenomena, they are systematically filtered through individuals' cognitive and emotional antecedents. In the high-stakes and analytical environment of legal education, identifying these structural predictors is critical to mitigating maladaptive judgment patterns. While existing literature globally links Cognitive Flexibility (CF) and Emotional Intelligence (EI) to adaptive reasoning, there remains a significant empirical gap regarding how the sub-dimensions of CF (alternatives, contr…

Neuropsychological and Emotional-Behavioral Profiles in Pediatric Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: A Single-Center Clinical Study.

Background: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked disorder caused by out-of-frame variants in the DMD gene, resulting in dystrophin deficiency and progressive muscle degeneration. Beyond motor involvement, evidence links DMD to cognitive impairment and an emotional-behavioral (EB) burden, potentially related to the altered expression of brain dystrophin isoforms (Dp71, Dp140, Dp427). Objectives: To screen for major neurodevelopmental, cognitive and/or EB difficulties in a monocentric cohort of children with DMD. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 21 children with DMD. Exploring cognitive, behavioral and autistic trait network topology in very preterm and term-born children.

INTRODUCTION: Compared to full-term (FT) born peers, children who were born very preterm (VPT; <32 weeks' gestation) are likely to display more cognitive and behavioral difficulties, including inattention, anxiety and socio-communication problems. In the published literature, such difficulties tend to be studied independently, thus failing to account for how different aspects of child development interact. The current study aimed to investigate children's cognitive and behavioral outcomes as interconnected, dynamically related facets of development that influence one another. METHODS: Partici

Functional Outcome of Dual Reinnervation with Cross-Facial Nerve Graft and Masseteric Nerve Transfer for Facial Paralysis.

BACKGROUND: The combination of cross-facial nerve graft (CFNG) and masseteric nerve transfer (MNT) for reinnervation of facial paralysis may provide advantages of both neural sources. However, quantitative functional outcome reports with a larger number of patients are lacking in the literature. Here, the authors describe their 8-year experience with this surgical technique. METHODS: Twenty patients who presented with complete facial paralysis (duration, <12 months) received dual reinnervation with CFNG and MNT. The functional outcome of the procedure was evaluated with the physician-graded o

Evaluation on Long-Term Test-Retest Reliability of the Short-Form Childhood Trauma Questionnaire in Patients with Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have reported an association between childhood trauma exposure and schizophrenia. Among these studies, the Short-form Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-SF) is one of the most widely used measures of childhood trauma. However, little is known regarding the long-term reliability of the CTQ-SF, especially in patients with psychopathology. METHODS: The CTQ-SF was administered to 50 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia from a hospital in Changsha, Hunan, China. These patients were asked to re-complete the CTQ-SF when they were re-hospitalized or received outpatient trea

Limbic scars: long-term consequences of childhood maltreatment revealed by functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment represents a strong risk factor for the development of depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in later life. In the present study, we investigated the neurobiological underpinnings of this association. Since both depression and PTSD have been associated with increased amygdala responsiveness to negative stimuli as well as reduced hippocampal gray matter volume, we speculated that childhood maltreatment results in similar functional and structural alterations in previously maltreated but healthy adults. METHODS: One hundred forty-eight healthy su

Self-injurious behavior in adolescent girls. Association with psychopathology and neuropsychological functions.

BACKGROUND: Self-injurious behavior (SIB) is increasingly popular in psychically ill adolescents, especially in girls with posttraumatic stress (PTSD) and personality disorders. Adolescents with SIB frequently exhibit neurofunctional and psychopathological deficits. We speculated that specific neuropsychological deficits and temperamental factors could predispose patients to SIB and prospectively explored adolescent psychiatric patients with and without SIB in order to find out differences in psychopathology, and neuropsychological or temperamental factors. SAMPLING AND METHODS: Ninety-nine p

Defining the phenotype of young adults with family histories of alcohol and other substance use disorders: Studies from the family health patterns project.

Individuals with a family history of alcohol and other drug use disorders (FH+) are at increased risk for developing substance use disorders themselves relative to those with no such histories (FH-). Here we sought to identify key characteristics associated with FH+ status and alcohol and other drug use disorder status in a large cohort of FH+ and FH- young adults. We conducted principal component analyses on demographic, temperament, and cognitive measures differentiating 506 FH+ and 528 FH- young adults. Three principal components were identified, and these component scores were then used to

How perceived lack of benevolence harms trust of artificial intelligence management.

As organizations continue to supplement and replace human management with artificial intelligence (AI), it is essential that we understand the factors that influence employees' trust in AI management. Across one preregistered field study, where we survey 400 delivery riders in Mainland China, and three preregistered experiments (total N = 2,350), we find that AI management is perceived as less benevolent than human management. Given that benevolence is an important antecedent of trust in leaders, this perception has a negative effect on trust in AI management, even when controlling for perceiv

A lifetime of fear of being laughed at: an aged perspective.

This paper reviews recent literature on gelotophobia (i.e., the fear of being laughed at) with an emphasis on age-specific aspects. Research with two instruments, the GELOPH and PhoPhiKat questionnaires, is presented with special attention being given to sociodemographic correlates and differences in intelligence, character strengths, personality, emotion, and humor. Quite consistently gelotophobes tend to misread positively motivated smiling and laughter (e.g. in social interactions, photographs or auditorily presented) and have lower values in many, but not all, components of humor. They hav

Taste and speech following surgical tongue reduction in children with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is an overgrowth disorder in which macroglossia is one of the main signs. We investigated the long-term outcome of tongue surgery reduction (TRS) on taste and speech in patients with BWS who were more than 5 years of age and had undergone surgical anterior wedge resection of the tongue. A questionnaire was used to assess medical history and to determine some aspects of speech, taste, psychological well-being, and degree of satisfaction with regard to TRS and tongue mobility. Speech sound error pattern and degree of intelligibility were measured by a speech the

Religiosity, psychological resources, and physical health.

Various explanations have been given for the positive association between religiosity and physical health. Using data from two waves of the National Survey of Midlife in the United States (1995, 2005) and retrospective data on the importance of religion in the home in which respondents were raised we find that psychological resources, operationalized by measures of emotional and psychological well-being, mediate the effect of this early exposure to religion but only on self-rated health and physical symptomatology; chronic illnesses and health limitations on activities of daily living are unaf

fMRI evidence of neural abnormalities in the subcortical face processing system in ASD.

Recent evidence suggests that a rapid, automatic face detection system is supported by subcortical structures including the amygdala, pulvinar, and superior colliculus. Early-emerging abnormalities in these structures may be related to reduced social orienting in children with autism, and subsequently, to aberrant development of cortical circuits involved in face processing. Our objective was to determine whether functional abnormalities in the subcortical face processing system are present in adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) during supraliminal fearful face processing. Participants

The 'Reading the Mind in Films' Task [child version]: complex emotion and mental state recognition in children with and without autism spectrum conditions.

Children with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) have difficulties recognizing others' emotions. Research has mostly focused on basic emotion recognition, devoid of context. This study reports the results of a new task, assessing recognition of complex emotions and mental states in social contexts. An ASC group (n = 23) was compared to a general population control group (n = 24). Children with ASC performed lower than controls on the task. Using task scores, more than 87% of the participants were allocated to their group. This new test quantifies complex emotion and mental state recognition in l

[Cognitive and affective characteristics of children with malformation syndrome].

The aim of this paper is to study the psychological and relational aspects in children suffering from specific malformative syndrome and precisely Down s., Sotos s., X-Fragile s. and Williams s. Indeed literature provides much data related to the phenotype, to the organic-biological characteristics, but little or nothing is known about the affective structure, the episodes and to the particular dynamics that emerge in he relation between the parents and the malformed child. A protocol was applied to our sample group (16 subjects). This protocol includes laboratory and instrumental tests (chrom

Personality factors in selection and flight proficiency.

Personality development is a dynamic process involving life forces, instinct drives, growth processes, life stresses, reactions to significant persons, both in and out of the family, and reactions to the environment in general, along with the mastery of methods and techniques for coping in solving problems and in providing for the satisfaction of one's needs. The love and fear of flying and the motivation and conflicts in flying involve many personality factors which deserve careful evaluation in selection of pilot and other flight personnel. These personality factors, variations, and traits a
