Root resorption of endodontically treated teeth following orthodontic treatment: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this meta-analysis was to investigate the effect of orthodontic treatment on root resorption of endodontically treated teeth compared to vital teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search was conducted in 18 electronic databases. Review articles and relevant articles were searched for cross-references. Two independent reviewers screened all articles according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria and extracted the corresponding data. The pooled estimate of mean difference of root resorption weighted by the fixed-effect model and the corresponding 95 % confi

Esthetic and endodontic management of a deep crown-root fracture of a maxillary central incisor.

Treatment of trauma to anterior teeth should aim at preserving the affected teeth so as to restore function and esthetic appearance. Recently, patients have come to expect adequate esthetics immediately after trauma. In the present case, a deep crown-root fracture compromised the pulp and extended subgingivally on the palatal aspect. After using the fractured fragment as a provisional crown, the patient received conventional root canal treatment, which provided immediately satisfactory esthetic results and reliable short-term restoration of the crown-root fractured tooth. Rehabilitation of the

A clinical report of the management of episodic idiopathic pruritus occurring during endodontic therapy.

INTRODUCTION: In endodontic practice, conditions may arise that are unexpected despite thorough preparation. The purpose of this case report was to describe how a condition of episodic idiopathic pruritus, which was undiscovered in the medical history taking, was managed without a loss of time. METHODS: A 29-year-old woman presented to the graduate endodontic clinic for conventional endodontic treatment of tooth #30 and intravenous moderate sedation for dental phobia. Before the administration of intraoral local anesthetics or intravenous medications, the patient was unable to keep still beca

Delayed Replantation after Endodontic and Fluoride Treatment: A 5-Year Follow-up.

AIM: To evaluate if endodontic and fluoride treatment of the root before delayed replantation would render the tooth a favorable prognosis. METHODS: A 10-year-old boy reported 10 hours after he had avulsed his maxillary right permanent central incisor. The pulp and PDL cells were considered to be nonviable. Endodontic treatment for the tooth was performed extraorally and obturated with gutta-percha. Prior to replantation, the root was treated with 1.23% APSF for 15 minutes. RESULT: An intraoral radiograph taken 6 months after replantation revealed narrowing of the PDL space around the replan

Possibilities of gutta-percha-centered infection in endodontically treated teeth: an in vitro study.

INTRODUCTION: Implanted biomaterials could provide surface for bacterial adherence and formation of biofilm, eventually leading to biomaterial-centered infections (BCIs). In this in vitro study, we examined the biofilm-forming capacity of Enterococcus faecalis on gutta-percha (GP) points under different nutrient status and surface conditioning with saliva and serum. METHODS: GP points (n = 420) coated with different root canal sealers (Sealapex or Roth) were conditioned with saliva or serum for 2-, 4-, and 12-week intervals and subsequently were incubated with E. faecalis for 2 weeks under nu

Rapid periapical bone destruction during endodontic treatment of a patient with rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease with an unknown etiology. Azathioprine is an immunosuppressive drug that is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. This case report describes the rapid periapical bone destruction that occurred during the endodontic treatment of a rheumatoid arthritis patient taking azathioprine and a corticosteroid. The cause of the rapid destruction is unclear. However, severe side effects can occur after administering azathioprine to rheumatoid arthritis patients. Therefore, dentists should check the patient's medical state thoroughly in order to prevent side effec

Complex endodontic treatment of an immature type III dens invaginatus. A case report.

AIM: To report the endodontic treatment of an immature maxillary central incisor with dens invaginatus. SUMMARY: Dens invaginatus is a rare malformation of teeth, probably resulting from an infolding of the dental papilla during tooth development. The present case describes the complex endodontic treatment of a type III dens invaginatus in an immature maxillary central incisor with a necrotic pulp and abscess formation. The initial treatment goal was to achieve apexification of the pseudocanal root and conservative root canal treatment in the main canal. Following 1-year of treatment with cal

Endodontic treatment of a supernumerary tooth fused to a mandibular second molar: a case report.

Since abnormal tooth morphology can predispose to caries and periodontal disease, careful management of fused teeth is essential. In this paper we report a rare case of a fused molar and supernumerary tooth and describe its management. Caries was removed from the tooth complex under local anesthesia. The pulp chamber of the supernumerary tooth was exposed without involvement of second molar pulp chamber. The root canal of the supernumerary tooth was prepared using the step back technique and copious irrigation with 2.6% sodium hypochlorite. Obturation using the lateral condensation technique w

Culture-independent detection of Eikenella corrodens and Veillonella parvula in primary endodontic infections.

Eikenella corrodens and Veillonella parvula are normal cultivable inhabitants of the oral cavity but their presence in endodontic infections has not been as common as it could be anticipated. This might have been because of shortcomings of culture techniques when it comes to bacterial isolation or identification. The present study intended to survey samples from primary endodontic infections for the presence of E. corrodens and V. parvula using a culture-independent 16S rRNA gene-based nested PCR protocol. Genomic DNA was isolated directly from samples taken from different forms of periradicul

Endodontic infection caused by localized aggressive periodontitis: a case report and bacteriologic evaluation.

A rare case of a periodontally induced endodontic lesion in a systemically healthy subject of 28 years is described. The patient, having presented with severe attachment loss on the palatal and distal aspects of his maxillary right second premolar, was diagnosed with localized aggressive periodontitis. He had never received periodontal treatment. The tooth was nonvital and showed all signs of symptomatic apical periodontitis. It was also free of any restoration. All clinical findings clearly suggested that the endodontic problem was caused by the aggressive periodontal disease. Bacteriologic s

A prognostic model for assessment of the outcome of endodontic treatment: Effect of biologic and diagnostic variables.

OBJECTIVE: Many biological variables, endodontic treatment factors, and restorative considerations have been suggested in the literature to affect the outcome of endodontic treatment. However, few attempts have been made recently to study these variables further. The purpose of this study was to identify the biologic and endodontic treatment-associated variables that are most predictive of treatment outcome for conventional endodontic therapy and to determine the magnitude of risk these variables pose on the outcome. STUDY DESIGN: The population of this historical prospective cohort study com
