BACKGROUND: Opioid over-prescription is wasteful and contributes to the opioid crisis. We implemented a personalized tiered discharge opioid protocol and education on opioid disposal to minimize over-prescription.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the intervention by investigating opioid use post-discharge for women undergoing abdomino-pelvic surgery, and patient adherence to opioid disposal education.
METHODS: We analyzed post-discharge opioid consumption among 558 patients. Eligible patients included those who underwent elective gynecologic surgery, were not taking scheduled opioids pre-operatively,

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have demonstrated the benefits of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols for patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) undergoing posterior spinal instrumented fusion (PSIF). However, there are relatively few studies investigating the effect of regular multidisciplinary team meetings on level selection, surgical performance parameters, and patient outcomes after PSIF for AIS. The aim of this study was to assess changes in intra- and postoperative outcomes following multidisciplinary team meeting implementation for patients undergoing PSIF for A…

Patients undergoing major surgery for gastrointestinal cancer are at high risk of developing or worsening malnutrition and sarcopenia. In malnourished patients, preoperative nutritional support may not be sufficient and so postoperative support is advised. This narrative review addresses several aspects of postoperative nutritional care in the setting of enhanced recovery programmes. Early oral feeding, therapeutic diet, oral nutritional supplements, immunonutrition, and probiotics are discussed. When postoperative intake is insufficient, nutritional support favouring the enteral route is reco

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols were first reported for colorectal and gynaecologic procedures. The main benefits have been a shorter length of stay and reduced complications. A retrospective audit was conducted of all patients who underwent ambulatory pelvic organ prolapse surgery at the Townsville Day Surgery between January 2008 and June 2019. Following the publication of a former audit, a modified ERAS protocol was adopted at our practice. We omitted a carbohydrate-rich fluid intake prior to surgery in our local protocol. Data were analysed for the type of surgery, postope…

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic bariatric procedures (EBTs) are associated with a high incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). We describe our experience with an Enhanced Recovery Protocol (ERP) program for EBTs, comparing healthcare utilization metrics before and after adoption.
METHODS: We instated an ERP for all patients undergoing EBT in our institution, which consisted of intravenous fluids, antiemetics, analgesics and antibiotics peri-procedure, oral antiemetics and analgesics post-procedure, and a structured phone visit 24-48 h post-procedure. We performed a retrospective revie

Several methods were introduced to limit perioperative blood loss in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). By transcollation of soft tissues below 100°C, bipolar sealers intend to reduce bleeding and tissue damage, compared with conventional electrocautery. Existing studies report contradictory findings about the performance of bipolar sealers. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a bipolar sealer on blood loss, transfusions, hospital length of stay (LOS), and functional scores in primary TKA. In this single-center prospective study, 101 patients, undergoing primary TKA in a fast-t

BACKGROUND: To explore the impact of the ERAS-based (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) Multidisciplinary Treatment Model (MDT) on perioperative management indicators of elderly patients with hip fractures in primary hospitals.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 120 elderly patients with hip fractures treated at our hospital from October 2020 to October 2024. The patients were divided into two groups: one group received the conventional model, while the other group received the ERAS-guided MDT model, with 58 and 62 patients in each group, respectively. PURPOSE: The recovery of gastrointestinal function and postoperative ileus are the leading goals for clinicians following surgery for adhesive small bowel obstruction. While enhanced recovery programs may improve recovery, their feasibility in emergency surgery has not yet been proven. We sought to assess the incidence of postoperative ileus in patients following surgery for ASBO and the feasibility of enhanced recovery programs, including their benefits in the recovery of gastrointestinal functions and reducing the length of hospitalization.
METHODS: This prospective study includes the first

This study aimed to retrospectively compare the effects of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS)-based multimodal pain nursing with conventional analgesic care on postoperative pain, opioid use, recovery, and complications in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA). A single-center retrospective study was conducted in 120 patients who underwent unilateral THA between March 2022 and April 2025. Patients were allocated to an ERAS group (n = 60) or a control group (n = 60) according to postoperative nursing protocols. Demographic and clinical data, perioperative pain management details,…

INTRODUCTION: Frailty is a known risk factor for adverse postoperative outcomes after gastrectomy for gastric cancer. However, its impact within standardized enhanced recovery protocols (ERPs) has not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate the association of frailty with postoperative outcomes and protocol adherence in patients undergoing gastrectomy managed under ERP across six Italian centers.
METHODS: This retrospective multicenter study included 957 patients undergoing gastrectomy within an ERP between 2018 and 2024. Frailty was assessed using the 5-item modified frailty inde

Aims/Background Throat cancer is a common malignant tumor in the head and neck region, with postoperative recovery influenced by various factors. The enhanced recovery after surgery-multidisciplinary team (ERAS-MDT) concept emphasizes the use of multidisciplinary collaboration to optimize preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care and treatment, aiming to accelerate patient recovery, reduce complications, and improve treatment outcomes. Therefore, this study aims to explore the impact of the ERAS-MDT-based nursing intervention in postoperative rehabilitation, nutritional status, and …

The present study assessed whether applying enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) guidelines for cesarean delivery is feasible in the tertiary care setting with an add-on objective to identify barriers to successful implementation. The cross-sectional study included women undergoing elective CS and willing to participate. The study attempted to understand barriers to ERAS implementation through timely interviewing study participants. Sixty-two patients participated in the study. Antenatal and fetal complications were observed in 39(63%) and 32(51%) participants. The study observed that at lea…

Hypotension following induction of general anaesthesia has been shown to result in increased complications and mortality postoperatively. Patients admitted to the hospital undergoing urgent surgery are often fasted from fluids for significant periods compared to elective patients subject to Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocols despite guidelines stating that a two-hour fast is sufficient. The aim of this prospective, observational study was to compare fasting times and intravascular volume status between elective surgery patients subject to enhanced recovery protocols and inpatient, urgen…

This article attempts to review the key components of a multimodal analgesic regimen for the treatment of acute pain. Adhering to these key components will help reduce the opioid burden to surgical patients while reducing acute pain. As well, this regimen is intended to reduce further negative contributions to the opioid crisis.

BACKGROUND: A daily algorithm for hospital discharge (DAHD) is a key point in the concept of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol. We aimed to evaluate the length of stay (LOS), rate of complications, and hospital costs variances after the introduction of the DAHD compared to the traditional postoperative management of brain tumour patients.
METHODS: This is a cohort study with partial retrospective data collection. All consecutive patients who underwent brain tumour resection in 2017 were analysed. Demographics and procedure-related variables, as well as clinical outcomes, LOS and…
