A comprehensive nationwide study of the incidence rate and lifetime risk for treated mental disorders.

IMPORTANCE: Understanding the epidemiologic profile of the life course of mental disorders is fundamental for research and planning for health care. Although previous studies have used population surveys, informative and complementary estimates can be derived from population-based registers. OBJECTIVE: To derive comprehensive and precise estimates of the incidence rate of and lifetime risk for any mental disorder and a range of specific mental disorders. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We conducted a follow-up study of all Danish residents (5.6 million persons), to whom all treatment is p

Ethnicity-related variation in breast cancer risk factors.

BACKGROUND: A variety of factors are predictors of breast cancer risk. However, the studies conducted to establish these risk factors have rarely included African American women. The few studies with sufficient numbers of African-American women suggest that risk factors for breast cancer among African-American women are similar to those of white women. Although risk factors may be similar for African-American and white women, differences in the prevalence of risk factors may explain the differences in patterns of incidence. METHODS: The authors reviewed the epidemiologic studies of breast can

Merging citizen science with epidemiology: design of a prospective feasibility study of health events and air pollution in Cologne, Germany.

BACKGROUND: Citizen science as an approach to merge society and science is not a new paradigm. Yet it is not common in public health, epidemiology, or medical sciences. SMARAGD (Sensors for Measuring Aerosols and ReActive Gases to Deduce health effects) assesses air pollution at participants' homes or workplaces in Cologne, Germany, as feasibility study with a citizen science approach. Personal exposure to air pollutants is difficult to study, because the distribution of pollutants is heterogeneous, especially in urban areas. Targeted data collection allows to establish connections between air

The Fifth German Oral Health Study (Fünfte Deutsche Mundgesundheitsstudie, DMS V) - rationale, design, and methods.

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases rank among the most prevalent non-communicable diseases in modern societies. In Germany, oral epidemiological data show that both dental caries and periodontal diseases are highly prevalent, though significant improvements in oral health has been taking in the population within the last decades, particularly in children. It is, therefore, the aim of the Fifth German Oral Health Study (DMS V) to actualize the data on current oral health status and to gather information on oral health behavior and risk factors. In addition to current oral health monitoring, the study wi

Exploring medicinal plants for antiparamphistomiasis: A scoping review of pharmacological insights and methodologies.

Paramphistomiasis, a neglected infectious disease affecting ruminants, leads to significant productivity losses. The limitations of current antitrematodal agents and emerging anthelmintic resistance highlight the need for alternative treatments, including those derived from medicinal plants. Pharmacological screening plays a crucial role in the discovery and development of natural products for antiparamphistomiasis. This scoping review summarises the methodological aspects used in pharmacological screening studies of medicinal plants for antiparamphistomiasis. Eligible studies included origina

Turkey Coronavirus: Current Knowledge, Critical Gaps, and Future Directions in Transmission Biology and Pathogenesis.

Turkey coronavirus (TCoV) is an enteric gammacoronavirus that has become a re-emerging pathogen of major economic importance in commercial turkey production. First identified in the 1970s, TCoV continues to circulate endemically and periodically resurges as a primary viral contributor to poult enteritis complex (PEC) and poult enteritis mortality syndrome (PEMS). The continuous need to understand TCoV is highlighted by its severe enterotropism, quick fecal-oral transmission and capacity to propagate covertly among older turkeys and spillover hosts like chickens. Despite more than fifty years o

Identification and characterization of a novel orthoreovirus from American eels, Anguilla rostrata.

Hemorrhagic gill necrosis disease (HGND) has resulted in substantial economic losses in the farming of American eels (Anguilla rostrata). Although prior research implicates viruses like American eel adomavirus (AEAdoV) and Anguillid herpesvirus (AngHV), the primary etiological agent remains elusive. In this study, a novel virus was isolated from the HGND samples of American eel using eel ovary (EO) cell lines. Following isolation, the virus was subjected to comprehensive characterization encompassing morphological features, genomic organization, phylogenetic relationships, pathogenic potential
