State of the art biology, progression, and clinical management of monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (MBL): consensus report from the Intercepting Blood Cancers Workshop Committee.

In March 2023 and 2024, a panel of international experts convened at the first and second Intercepting Blood Cancers (IBC) Workshops, with the aim of better appreciating the diagnostic challenges, pathophysiology, and potential therapeutic interventions for precursor malignant hematology conditions. Here, we report a summary of the proceedings from the sessions focused on monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (MBL)/chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). We highlight four main content areas: biology of MBL, clinical implications of MBL, progression of MBL and transformation from indolent CLL to aggressi

Qualitative Analysis of Colorectal Cancer Screening in Rural Nebraska.

Compared to urban residents, rural populations are less likely to engage in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. As part of a statewide cancer needs assessment, we aimed to elicit rural perspectives about CRC screening and resources. We conducted three focus groups with rural Nebraska cancer survivors and caregivers (N = 20) in Spring 2021 using a collective case study design. Participant awareness of and knowledge about CRC screening methods varied across focus groups; overall, 95% of participants had heard of colonoscopy. Participants were less familiar with fecal tests and had confusion about

The Danish health care system and epidemiological research: from health care contacts to database records.

Denmark has a large network of population-based medical databases, which routinely collect high-quality data as a by-product of health care provision. The Danish medical databases include administrative, health, and clinical quality databases. Understanding the full research potential of these data sources requires insight into the underlying health care system. This review describes key elements of the Danish health care system from planning and delivery to record generation. First, it presents the history of the health care system, its overall organization and financing. Second, it details d

Perceived information provision and satisfaction among lymphoma and multiple myeloma survivors--results from a Dutch population-based study.

To improve posttreatment care for (long-term) lymphoma survivors in the Netherlands, survivorship clinics are being developed. As information provision is an important aspect of survivorship care, our aim was to evaluate the current perceived level of and satisfaction with information received by non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) and multiple myeloma (MM) survivors, and to identify associations with sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. The population-based Eindhoven Cancer Registry was used to select all patients diagnosed with NHL, HL and MM from 1999 to 2009. In

Impact of bisphosphonate drugs on dental implant healing and peri-implant hard and soft tissues: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Implantology represents the gold standard for oral rehabilitation, unfortunately, often, despite there are no local contraindications to this type of rehabilitation, there are uncertainties regarding the general health of our patients. Many patients nowadays take bisphosphonate drugs, often without first seeking advice from an oral surgeon or a dentist. The purpose of this review is precisely to highlight any contraindications to this type of treatment reported in the literature, in patients who take or have taken bisphosphonate drugs. METHODS: For this study the scientific informa

Current Status of COVID-19 Therapies and Drug Repositioning Applications.

The rapid and global spread of a new human coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has produced an immediate urgency to discover promising targets for the treatment of COVID-19. Drug repositioning is an attractive approach that can facilitate the drug discovery process by repurposing existing pharmaceuticals to treat illnesses other than their primary indications. Here, we review current information concerning the global health issue of COVID-19 including promising approved drugs and ongoing clinical trials for prospective treatment options. In addition, we describe computational approaches to be used in dru

Construction and validation of a risk prediction model for perianal infection in HSCT patients: a retrospective cohort study.

BackgroundPerianal infection is a frequent and detrimental complication in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), leading to significant morbidity and extended hospital stays. Despite its clinical significance, a substantial gap remains in our ability to proactively identify high-risk individuals. However a validated predictive model is actually lacking and it is still unclear how to identify these patients before the onset of infection.ObjectiveThis study aimed to develop and to validate a risk prediction model for the accurate assessment of perianal infection ris

Estimating cancer incidence in Uganda: a feasibility study for periodic cancer surveillance research in resource limited settings.

BackgroundPopulation based cancer registries (PBCRs) are accepted as the gold standard for estimating cancer incidence in any population. However, only 15% of the world's population is covered by high quality cancer registries with coverage as low as 1.9% in settings such as Africa. This study was conducted to assess the operational feasibility of estimating cancer incidence using a retrospective "catchment population" approach in Uganda.MethodsA retrospective population study was conducted in 2018 to identify all newly diagnosed cancer cases between 2013 and 2017 in Mbarara district. Metal-on-Metal Total Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty: An Evidence-Based Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to assess the safety and effectiveness of metal on metal (MOM) hip resurfacing arthroplasty for young patients compared with that of total hip replacement (THR) in the same population. CLINICAL NEED: Total hip replacement has proved to be very effective for late middle-aged and elderly patients with severe degenerative diseases of the hips. As indications for THR began to include younger patients and those with a more active life style, the longevity of the implant became a concern. Evidence suggests that these patients experience relatively higher

Palliative care follow-up for cancer patients combining day-hospital visits and telemedicine: What feasibility?

BackgroundDue to the increasing life expectancy of patients with cancer, palliative care services are increasingly solicited to provide follow-up for individuals living at home. The implementation of teleconsultations represents a potential solution to extend access to palliative care follow-up to a larger number of patients. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the a priori acceptance of teleconsultations among all patients admitted to palliative care, as well as the feasibility of their implementation. We therefore initially explored whether a specific patient profile might limit acceptan
