Hemoglobin S is an abnormal protein that induces morphological changes in erythrocyte in low-oxygen conditions. In Mexico, it is reported that up to 13.7% of the population with mutation in one allele are considered asymptomatic (sickle cell trait). The sickle cell trait and diabetes mellitus are conditions that occur together in more than one million patients worldwide. Both diseases possibly produce microvascular changes in retinopathy and acute chest syndrome. The aim of this study was to evaluate the induction of sickle cells in samples of diabetic patients with sickle cell trait to identi

Bacteremia is a relatively common event in young, apparently mildly ill febrile children. The bacteremia is associated with certain risk factors including age, elevated temperature and high white blood cell count or increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The disease and bacteremia clears without antimicrobial agents in some children, but many untreated children have persistent disease. Culture of blood is valuable in children with risk features and may be enhanced in the future as methods for detection of antigen become more widely available. Available data from randomized trials of therapy

T-2 toxin has been reported to cause severe oral lesions and neural disturbances in young broiler chickens. T-2 toxin, when added at a level of 20 mug per g of feed, caused oral lesions but no abnormal neural disturbances in young broiler chickens. T-2 toxin, when added at a level of 20 mug per g of feed, caused oral lesions but no abnormal neural symptoms in laying hens. T-2 toxin had no effect on either hemoglobin, hematocrit values, erythrocyte count, plasma glucose, prothrombin times, or the sizes of the liver, spleen, pancreas, and heart. Lipid content of the liver was not altered. Feed c…

Chikungunya fever is a global vector-borne viral disease. Patients with acute chikungunya are usually treated symptomatically. The arthritic phase may be self-limiting. However, many patients develop extremely disabling arthritis that does not improve after months. The aim of this study was to describe the treatment of chikungunya arthritis (CHIKA) patients. A medical records review was conducted in 133 CHIKA patients seen at a rheumatology practice. Patients were diagnosed by clinical criteria and confirmed by the presence of anti-chikungunya IgM. Patients were treated with methotrexate (20 m

BACKGROUND: In December 2019, the outbreak of a disease subsequently termed COVID-19 occurred in Wuhan, China. The number of cases increased rapidly and spread to six continents. However, there is limited information on the chest computed tomography (CT) results of affected patients. Chest CT can assess the severity of COVID-19 and has sufficient sensitivity to assess changes in response to glucocorticoid therapy.
OBJECTIVE: Analyze COVID-19 patients to determine the relationships of clinical characteristics, chest CT score, and levels of inflammatory mediators.
METHODS: This retrospective,

BACKGROUND: Prediction of outcome in diabetic foot infection (DFI) remains difficult due to lack of active signs of infection, and apparently normal white blood cell (WBC) count. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) have been studied previously in this regard and were not useful. Hence, we evaluated procalcitonin (PCT) as a prognostic marker in this study.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to study the role of PCT, CRP, and ESR levels in predicting clinical outcome of acute DFI.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 250 subjects (197 men, 53 women) with acute DFI were enrolled. W

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute self-limiting form of vasculitis that afflicts infants and children and manifests as fever and signs of mucocutaneous inflammation. Children with KD show various laboratory inflammatory abnormalities, such as elevations in their white blood cell (WBC) count, C-reactive protein (CRP) level, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). We here performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 178 KD patients to identify the genetic loci that influence 10 important KD laboratory markers: WBC count, neutrophil count, platelet count, CRP, ESR, hemoglobin, aspartate

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: Autoimmunity plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of rheumatic heart disease. Although the ongoing rheumatic process has been demonstrated with high levels of inflammatory markers, the cellular mechanism(s) of autoimmunity have not yet been investigated. The study aim was to examine levels of circulating CD4+CD25+ T cells in patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis, and to evaluate the relationship between regulatory CD4+CD25+ T-cell count and clinical and echocardiographic measures.
METHODS: A total of 42 patients with mitral stenosis was enrolled into

CASE: An otherwise healthy 9-year-old girl developed a fever and atraumatic right hip pain with inability to bear weight and exquisite pain with any motion. Her peripheral white blood-cell count was 9.85 × 10/μL, erythrocyte sedimentation rate was 18 mm/hr, and C-reactive protein level was 7.56 mg/L. Aspiration yielded bloody fluid with 611,932 red blood cells/μL, 49,529 white blood cells/μL (92% neutrophils), negative Gram stain, and no crystals. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an intracapsular lesion anterior to the femoral neck. The joint was irrigated and the lesion was excised. Micros

A 43-year-old woman with a 3-year history of headache, fever, and swelling of the forehead, presented to our hospital. A general examination revealed palmar and plantar pustules. Blood analyses showed an elevated white blood cell count, C-reactive protein level, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Brain MRI revealed a partially thickened cranial bone with gadolinium enhancement, and also abnormally enhanced dura mater. Bone scintigraphy showed involvement of the cranial bone and bilateral sternoclavicular joints. Palmar skin biopsy indicated palmoplantar pustulosis. From these results, SAPHO (

In this report, we discuss a case of a 14-month-old male presenting in the emergency department with refusal to bear weight on his left leg. Plain radiographic studies revealed no evidence of effusion, fracture, or dislocation. Laboratory studies were significant for an elevated white blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein. Further studies included unremarkable ultrasound of the left hip and normal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of both hips. An incidental finding on MRI was a left inguinal mass concerning an incarcerated hernia. Ultrasound of this mass demo

Two cases of coexisting juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and sickle cell disease (ages 7 and 17) are presented. The diagnoses of JIA were delayed for years because of the similarity of presentations in the two conditions. Both cases had been treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for years. Both had positive rheumatoid factor, and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) while one of the patients had elevated serum ferritin and anticyclic citrullinated protein. Radiology showed marked arthritic changes with presence of avascular necrosis in a patient's head of femur. Both c

A short-cut review was performed to evaluate whether inflammatory markers such as C reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), white cell count (WCC) and procalcitonin (PCT) are able to discriminate between streptococcal and viral tonsillitis, enabling a reduction in the overuse of antibiotics. Eight studies with a total of 1031 participants were found. The author, date and country of publication, patient group studied, study type, relevant outcomes, results and study weaknesses of these papers are tabulated. The clinical bottom line is that WCC, CRP and PCT levels are highe

First-line investigations for all patients include full blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, plasma glucose, plasma cholesterol, plasma electrolytes, creatinine. ECG, chest X-ray and colour Doppler sonography of the neck. Carotid selective arteriography is performed when colour Doppler of the symptomatic carotid artery shows a stenosis of about 70% or more, provided the patient is fit for carotid endarterectomy. The search for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation is worthwhile in patients with palpitations. Transesophageal echocardiography is indicated if a cardiac source of embolism is susp

Endemic pemphigus foliaceus (EPF) has its pathogenesis frequently associated to autoimmune phenomena. In this paper, a few routine laboratory tests, usually disturbed in some autoimmune diseases, were taken in 20 patients with EPF, which were screened for antinuclear antibodies (ANA), rheumatoid factor (RF), C-reactive protein (CRP) and changes of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), serologic proteins electrophoresis and total leucocyte count. The CRP was found in 60% of cases, leukocytosis in 85%, high ESR in all of them and mild alterations in serologic proteins analysis. No ANA or RF was

For several weeks a 15-year-old girl had complained of increasing abdominal pain with vomiting. On admission to hospital the bloated abdomen was diffusely sensitive to pressure and the bowel sounds were high pitched and loud. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate was increased to 23/40 mm and the white cell count to 12,000/microliters. Ultrasound examination revealed an echo-dense area with dorsal echo loss at the gastric side of the pylorus. X-ray films of the stomach showed fluid levels and a soft-tissue mass in the left upper abdomen. At laparotomy a large (12 x 6 cm) trichobezoar was found in the
