A nanophthalmic patient with hypermetropia, shortened anterior-posterior axial length, and thickened choroid presented with a choroidal detachment and nonrhegmatogenous retinal detachment (NRRD). He underwent partial thickness, 5 x 7 mm, sclerectomies and 1-2 mm central sclerostomies 9.5 mm posterior to the limbus, specifically avoiding vortex veins. The cells in serous effusions from 14 cases of histologically proven ductal adenocarcinoma of the breast and from an equal number of proven adenocarcinomas of the ovary were morphologically analyzed, with quantitative values assigned to various cell parameters. Postoperative mediastinal effusion after cardiac operations is a common phenomenon and has a potential for serious complications, such as tamponade necessitating urgent drainage. Computed tomography of the chest provides excellent postoperative visualization of the mediastinum. Catheter insertion or paracentesis guided by computed tomography has been used to accomplish nonoperative drainage of symptomatic postoperative mediastinal effusion in six cases. This technique offers simplicity, safety, and cost effectiveness.

Culture of a bronchial aspirate from an immunosuppressed patient with severe pneumonia yielded a growth of filamentous poorly staining gram-negative rods. Fluorescence with Legionella pneumophila direct fluorescein-isothiocyanate conjugate was equivocal. Gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) and GLC/mass-spectrometry (GLC-MS) of the cellular fatty acids of the isolate confirmed that the organism was L. pneumophila.
