[Factors related to failure to complete immunization of children aged 10-23 months in Ndoulo (Senegal)].

INTRODUCTION: Avoidable diseases cause more than two million deaths worldwide every year. In sub-Saharan Africa, only half of all children receive their complete vaccine series. In Senegal, an expanded program of immunization began as a pilot program in 1979 and was generalised in 1985. Nonetheless poor population adherence to child immunization makes it difficult to meet its annual target of 80% per vaccine. This study sought to explore the factors related to failure to complete routine immunization in Ndoulo, in the health district of Diourbel. METHOD: A cross-sectional descriptive and anal

The intergenerational transmission of economic adversity, BMI, and emotional distress from adolescence to middle adulthood.

The present study examined the intergenerational transmission of economic adversity, as well as physical and mental health across generations. Specifically, we examined the effects of parental economic adversity, body mass index (BMI), and emotional distress during the child's adolescence on their economic adversity, BMI, and emotional distress in middle adulthood. The study included 366 Generation 1 (G1) mothers and fathers and their adolescents (Generation 2; G2) in middle adulthood. G1 behavior was examined when G2 was 16 years old and G2 behavior was assessed at Age 42. In line with aspect

Natural history of male psychological health: VI. Correlates of successful marriage and fatherhood.

The author examines the relationship between quality of object relations and health on the basis of data from a prospective 35-year follow-up of 95 men selected for health. Judges blind to other data made independent ratings of physical health at 52, childhood environment, psychopathology, and maturity of defenses. These ratings were highly correlated with independent ratings of high school social adjustment, adult friendship patterns, marital satisfaction, and outcome of children. The author speculates that the capacity for object relations may be a relatively stable dimension of adult person

Early maternal and paternal bonding, childhood physical abuse and adult psychopathic personality.

BACKGROUND: A significant gap in the literature on risk factors for psychopathy is the relative lack of research on parental bonding.MethodThis study examines the cross-sectional relationship between maternal and paternal bonding, childhood physical abuse and psychopathic personality at age 28 years in a community sample of 333 males and females. It also assesses prospectively whether children separated from their parents in the first 3 years of life are more likely to have a psychopathic-like personality 25 years later. RESULTS: Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that: (1) poor paren

Body mass index and childhood symptoms of depression, anxiety, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: A within-family Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Higher BMI in childhood is associated with emotional and behavioural problems, but these associations may not be causal. Results of previous genetic studies imply causal effects but may reflect influence of demography and the family environment. METHODS: This study used data on 40,949 8-year-old children and their parents from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) and Medical Birth Registry of Norway (MBRN). We investigated the impact of BMI on symptoms of depression, anxiety, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at age 8. We applied within-fami

The darker side of fatherhood: clinical and developmental ramifications of the "Laius motif".

"The Darker Side of Fatherhood" is intended as a clinical sequel to an earlier article, "Oedipus Revisited: Laius and the 'Laius Complex'". After briefly summarizing the allegorical implications of the various forgotten Oedipus myths and the father's fateful role within the Theban tragedy, this paper elaborates on those pederastic and filicidal inclinations that I believe to be universal among fathers. When such wishes are subject to primal repression, they enhance adaptation, fueling a father's aggressive dialogue with sons and daughters from infancy through the oedipal era into adolescence.

Maternal postpartum behavior and the emergence of infant-mother and infant-father synchrony in preterm and full-term infants: the role of neonatal vagal tone.

Relations between maternal postpartum behavior and the emergence of parent-infant relatedness as a function of infant autonomic maturity were examined in 56 premature infants (birthweight = 1000-1500 g) and 52 full-term infants. Maternal behavior, mother depressive symptoms, and infant cardiac vagal tone were assessed in the neonatal period. Infant-mother and infant-father synchrony, maternal and paternal affectionate touch, and the home environment were observed at 3 months. Premature birth was associated with higher maternal depression, less maternal behaviors, decreased infant alertness, an

Association between hyperactivity and executive cognitive functioning in childhood and substance use in early adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether deficient executive cognitive functioning (ECF) in association with high behavioral activity level comprise components of the liability to substance abuse. METHOD: A high-risk (HR) group having fathers with a lifetime DSM-III-R diagnosis of a psychoactive substance use disorder was compared with a low-average-risk (LAR) group whose fathers had neither psychoactive substance use disorder nor another adult Axis I psychiatric disorder. ECF and behavioral activity were measured using neuropsychological tests, activity monitor, diagnostic interview, and informant ra

[Aspects of emotional stress on relatives of schizophrenic patients].

Based on data acquired during first weekend leave of schizophrenic in-patients, variables are identified related to high emotional strain for patients (n = 78) and family members (n = 121). This attempt is successful only when examining data for mothers and fathers separately. Mothers feel more emotional pressure when patients lie in bed for prolonged periods, and develop increasing feelings of guilt the more obviously patients are socially handicapped in daily life. Fathers, however, significantly react to the length of time patients spend at home. For both parents correlations are found betw

"As Long as I Live, My Sweet Boy You'll Be:" Parents' Continuing Bonds in Early Bereavement.

BACKGROUND: Bereaved parents seek ways to maintain connections with their deceased child throughout their lifelong grief. These continuing bonds may bolster parental social functioning, yet limited research has explored continuing bonds early in bereavement. AIMS: To explore how parents maintain connection with their child within the first 2 years following death. METHODS: Parents of children who died from cancer 6-24 months prior completed the 11-item Continuing Bonds Scale (CBS) and an open-ended question querying ongoing connections. CBS scores ranged from 11 to 55, with higher scores ind

Intergenerational transmission of polygenic predisposition for neuropsychiatric traits on emotional and behavioural difficulties in childhood.

Childhood emotional and behavioural difficulties tend to co-occur and often precede diagnosed neuropsychiatric conditions. Identifying shared and specific risk factors for early-life mental health difficulties is therefore essential for prevention strategies. Here, we examine how parental risk factors shape their offspring's emotional and behavioural symptoms (e.g. feelings of anxiety, and restlessness) using data from 14,959 genotyped family trios from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa). We model maternal reports of emotional and behavioural symptoms, organizing them i

Massive SCA7 expansion detected in a 7-month-old male with hypotonia, cardiomegaly, and renal compromise.

Infantile spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 (SCA7) is phenotypically different from the child-onset and adult-onset cases, presenting as a multisystem disorder associated with pathologically large CAG trinucleotide repeat sequences. We describe a case study of a male who presented at 5 months of age with marked motor delay, failure to thrive, and a patent ductus arteriosus. He later developed renal failure of uncertain aetiology. The infant became progressively hypotonic, and cardiac and renal function deteriorated further; he died at the age of 11 months of multisystem failure. Family history rev

[Protein-energy malnutrition in an urban African milieu (Togo). Etiologic factors in kwashiorkor and marasmus-kwashiorkor].

The etiologic factors of protein-energy malnutrition (P.E.M.) have been studied in 59 children with kwashiorkor (KWK) or marasmus-kwashiorkor (MKWK) and living in an african urban area. The decline of breast feeding leads to an earlier P.E.M., mainly MKWK. This decline is linked to urbanization, mother's activities, dislocation of traditional structures and use of artificial formulas. Essentially based on cereals, the diet is responsible of the post-weaning P.E.M. Poverty, ignorance and food taboos are related to a lack in weaning food varieties. A small number of infants with KWK had a rich p

Attachment in young children with incarcerated fathers.

The present study examined young children's attachment behaviors during paternal incarceration and reported on initial validity of a new measure used to rate children's attachment-related behaviors and emotions during visits in a corrections setting. Seventy-seven children, age 2 to 6 years, and their jailed fathers and current caregivers participated in the home visit portion of the study, whereas 28 of these children participated in the jail visit. The results indicated that 27% of children witnessed the father's crime and 22% of children witnessed the father's arrest, with most children who

Divorced fathers' proximity and children's long-run outcomes: evidence from Norwegian registry data.

This study examines the link between divorced nonresident fathers' proximity and children's long-run outcomes, using high-quality data from Norwegian population registers. We follow (from birth to young adulthood) each of 15,992 children born into married households in Norway in the years 1975-1979 whose parents divorced during his or her childhood. We observe the proximity of the child to his or her father in each year following the divorce and link proximity to educational and economic outcomes for the child in young adulthood, controlling for a wide range of observable characteristics of th

Intergenerational Stability of Callous-Unemotional Traits.

This study investigated the stability of callous and unemotional (CU) traits across generations by assessing self-report assessments of psychopathy factors in parents and their relationship to children's CU traits in a clinical sample: 223 boys (M age = 7.65) and 83 girls (M = 7.35) referred for treatment of disruptive behavior disorders. First, we expanded previous findings showing a positive relationship between maternal psychopathy scores and CU traits in boys. Second, we tested whether parental psychopathy scores predicted CU traits in children over and above general indicators of mental h

Values that Fathers Communicate to Sons about Sex, Sexuality, Relationships, and Marriage.

African American males between ages 13 and 24 are disproportionately affected by unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV/AIDS; indeed, they account for 50% of HIV infections among all youth. Clear communication between parents and their youth about sex is associated with higher rates of sexual abstinence, condom use, and intent to delay initiation of sexual intercourse, which can prevent STIs and unintended pregnancy. However, barriers exist for parents to educate their youth about sexual health. The purpose of this articl
